Urin ist steril und enthält vor allem Stickstoff und Phosphor, Pflanzennährstoffe, die energieaufwendig herzustellenden Kunstdünger ersetzen können.
Fäzes bestehen überwiegend aus organischen Stoffen, die gut kompostierbar sind und danach in den Boden eingebracht werden können, um den Humusgehalt zu steigern. Aus Fäzes kann aber auch Biogas gewonnen und daraus Energie erzeugt werden.

L'humus è un componente chimico del terreno derivato da un processo di decomposizione e rielaborazione della sostanza organica del terreno. È un eteropolimero con peso molecolare che va da poche centinaia a migliaia di Dalton. L'humus rappresenta la parte più attiva, sotto l'aspetto chimico e fisico, della sostanza organica del terreno e interagisce con la frazione minerale e con la soluzione circolante influenzando le proprietà chimiche e fisiche del terreno. La scoperta dell'importanza dell'humus per la nutrizione della pianta la si fa risalire all'agronomo tedesco Albrecht Thaer.
