Not the greatest photo of a Calliope hummingbird, but the nice people at Bassetts Station near Yuba Pass in the Sierra Nevada wanted to see this. Next time I'll remember to bring my flash.

A male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) hovers in the air next to a feeder on a nice early September afternoon.
I had noticed earlier that a couple of the hummingbirds were chasing each other, and I referred to it as a "aerial circus" and how they were "dogfighting." I don't' really know who was chasing whom, but at times both a male and female would go into this hover-mode, moving a little bit to the left and right, chirping away.
I set up and waited for one of them to come to a feeder (and attempt to feed until chased off) when this guy just started hovering next to the feed station. Now, I usually prefocus on the feeder and wait until the subject gets there, but this time I "shot from the hip" and was able to focus on him in mid-air and squeeze the shutter button in time to capture him before he moved.
Oh yeah - I had the shutter in burst mode. :)
The hummingbirds have become more active, eating more and also more territorial as they (most likely) sense the change of seasons and prepare for their long trip south.
