“Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it.”

I’ve been trying to make something for over a week now, but have been battling with the sun. Yesterday, at last, the dark clouds came rumbling in and I was able to make something weird. It’s wonderful to be able to return to my roots; grabbing my camera and dragging myself through some woodland or fields and just make stuff. Gotta keep making stuff.

i started doing embroidery. want to buy some? go to my etsy.

edit- i just took these off of etsy because of future craft fairs. can't blow through all my stock. we have a show coming up in NYC. the opening is november 12th from 6-9 at Leffot 10 christopher st.

I left my History class and passed through the Image Arts Centre on campus on my way to an appointment. I saw her lying on a bench in the lobby, chatting with a friend and dipping into a box of take-out lunch. I was immediately struck by her great hairstyle and then by her friendly face and wanted to invite her to my Human Family project. I know it’s poor form to walk up and interrupt someone who is eating, but that’s just what I did. I led off with an apology. Her amused smile told me she wasn’t angry but saw the humor in the situation. Once I stammered out my introduction and project request she closed up her lunch box and told her friend she would be right back. She was willing. Meet Shadora. It’s a lovely name and when I looked it up later I found out it is associated with ”communication" and "entertainment" (both of which turned out to fit).

I knew there was a stairwell a few steps away which had light entering from a row of windows to the side so I suggested we step into the stairway for the photos. We had to dodge a few students heading to the second floor but proceeded with the photos. Shadora asked if I needed a certain expression or pose and I said she would look great without any deliberate expression. Of course, she burst out laughing but in the end I thought the more subtle expressions made the nicest portraits.

Aware of her waiting friend and lunch, I walked her back to the bench and suggested she might tell me a bit more about herself via email when I sent her the photos. We exchanged contact information and after this brief interaction, all I knew about her was her name, that she is 19, is a university student studying Film, and that she was born and raised in Canada. Oh, I also knew that she eats a healthy lunch (her lunch container looked vegetarian). I also experienced her as photogenic, good-natured, spontaneous and trusting.

Hoping against hope that she would get in touch with me to “tell her story” I held off on submitting her portrait to the project. My patience was rewarded when she wrote me back the next day and gave a beautiful summary of her story. It was so nice that I will simply quote it, including a link to her vlog (video blog).

“Hi Jeff,

Admittedly, it was strange being approached for a picture but I didn’t mind at all. I’m happy to help you on your project.

Well as you know, my name is Shadora. I’m 19 and I go to Ryerson for film. My parents and I were born here but I have roots in Jamaica and Dominica. I can speak the Jamaican dialect, Patois, but I know nothing about my Dominican side. My grandma is Dominican, but doesn’t speak much of it. When she moved here she tried her best to assimilate to Canadia culture and has completely disassociated herself with her background.

In my spare time I like to make vlogs and post them on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPBYiO7Cgsw

I usually try to make my videos funny. I love the comedy genre.

I moved around a lot as a child. Being an introvert it wasn’t easy making friends or being the new girl all the time. As a child I watched a lot of television and used it as a source of escapism. It was just my mom and I growing up, so, it was nice to come home from school and immerse myself into the lives and realities of whom ever I was watching that evening. Comedy was my favourite genre of movie and Tv to watch. I guess that’s why I’m film school I make comedic shorts. It’s the genre I’m most familiar with. I suppose it’s also a way of giving back, in a sense.

It always warms my heart when one of my subscribers from YouTube message me and tell me that my video made their night. It brings me so much joy to uplift people’s spirits. In a weird way see myself in these strangers who cope having a bad day or week or month by coming home and seeking out entertainment to make them laugh and temporarily escape their environment. I see myself in them because that’s what I used to do. It’s what I needed to do.

Hope that helps!

Best wishes,"

It’s not often that a stranger will take the time to get back to me with such a detailed and interesting email to complete my story. The fact that Shadora did - and that she made it so informative and personal - says a lot about her good will and trust. Thank you Shadora!

I had to do crazy contortions on the floor to get my feet against the black paper hung from the edge of my bed. I had the camera upside down on the floor, while I twisted myself into an L-shape so that my feet would be positioned at a more natural-LOOKING angle ... trust me it did not feel natural at all.

Hmmm, I notice that my toenails are rather rough and I haven't been moisturising my feet for years. I hope it all adds texture and interest.

About 7,2 millions of Uyghurs live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region at the western extremity of China. Uighur means unity or alliance. Their origins seem to come back to the Ding Ling nomads, in the 3rd century BC. The ancestors of the Uyghurs mixed with Turkish nomad tribes, Hans, Mongolians and Tibetans. With the settlement of the population and the development of trade, commercial links with China developped on the Silk Road. At the end of the 10th century, Islam spread. The imperial governement of China then implemented a tight control over the region. This led to the unrest of Uqturpan in 1765. Rebellions and separatist revendications have never ceased since then, even after the region became autonomous in 1955. Islam used to have a real influence on economic, legal land educational affairs as well as on the matrimonial system. Nowadays religion has shrunk to the personal space.

Human Nature is a series I took at the Bavarian Flickr Meet Up this summer. It pictures everyone who has been there with some pieces of nature on their face, combining the beauty of nature and human.

Thank you everyone for modeling and allowing me to glue flowers and leaves on your faces <3
