Extra Protection Against the Moon's Harshness

For a Moonwalking astronaut like Apollo 17 Commander Gene Cernan a space suit provided some protection against the extreme temperatures and brilliant sunlight experienced on the lunar surface. However, additional Lunar Extravehicular Activity (LEVA) hardware had to be added to the suit before the astronaut could safely venture out on the lunar surface. Forms of these LEVA accessories are displayed above.

LEVA Boots

During the lunar "day." the intense sunlight could bake the Moon's soil to a temperature of +250"F. For an astronaut planning to walk on this hot soil for many hours, this required the donning of protective LEVA boots that were pulled on over the pressure boots of the space suit.

The LEVA boots provided the astronaut with 33 additional layers of insulation to protect the feet. In addition, the soles of the boots were made from a silicone rubber with large ribs molded into the bottom. These ribs provided traction and left distinctive imprint in the lunar soil. The footprints left on the Moon by these LEVA boots will remain for millions of years, a lasting imprint of humankind's first exploration of another planet.

This digitally painted work represents humankinds quest for enlightenment and understanding of the material world as well as realms incarnate. I paid great detail to the interplay of light and shade in this piece to express the search for light, higher consciousness and enlightened modes of being. The figure represents my archetypal vision of beauty and documents the bodies immaterial and corporeal nature as well as the inner light (the soul). The repeating pattern began as a sketch on graph paper and was incorporated due to its significance to my own state of awareness and its universal form.

For the love and the respect of humankind and the Earth: Abolish Nuclear Weapons!

Anti-war / anti-nuclear weapons activists converged on the Naval Submarine Base Kitsap-Bangor on Saturday May 10th, 2008 in a Mothers Day commemorative action. Participant's engaged in a traditional vigil and nonviolent civil resistance direct action to oppose the weapons of mass destruction as they exist in their offensive capacity on the base. The offensive capacity of the weapons is in contravention of several legally binding international agreements. Unfortunately, the United States Government is in flagrant violation of these treaties. The abnegation of international law by the Government of the United States of America imperils the world. Decision-makers behave in ways that are Machiavellian. They employ the Hobbesian model of power-politics where "might makes right" and the "ends justify the means", which is then applied to international discourse. However, there is a better way.

By respecting international laws and agreements, the United States can help to promote and create an international environment of equity and respect.

One of the problems with the trident nuclear missile programs is that in addition to their purported role as a well-intentioned defense, these missiles also serve as a basic international bully mechanism. The trident missile system deployed via Bangor submarine base is estimated to be capable of wreaking a several months' long nuclear winter over much of the globe.

Instead of operating in the realm of power-politics where the application, or the threat of application, of brute force hangs over international proceedings: I challenge the Government and the People of the USA to pursue a better way. I challenge the Gov't and People of the United States of America (including myself) to work for a foreign policy that truly values human rights, human dignity, human health, environmental health, fairness and equity, truth, honesty, respectfulness (for ourselves individually, for each other, and for the Earth).

The means create the ends. (good means create good ends / bad means create bad ends...)

“Magic Water”: water and humankind. Let yourself be captivated by twelve water images

The Hansgrohe Calendar constantly presents fascination with water in new interpretations, with a focus on people – and on the magic that water bestows. Now in its tenth year of publication, this motto is also the title for the Hansgrohe Calendar 2013: “Magic Water”.

Hansgrohe was lucky enough to scoop American people photographer Liz Von Hoene and New York still life photographer and designer Craig Cutler for the artistic interpretation.

Did you know that a planet with hibiscus flowers is a planet which is too beautiful to leave in humankind's hands? It is quite silly to warn humankind about the consequences of human behavior, but the human species will certainly go extinct because of humankind's decision to destroy the Earth for the sake of profit, dominion and humankind's reckless disregard for life.

What must humankind do in order to save itself? Humankind cannot do anything. Humankind doesn't have free will. In addition, the point of no return has been passed and humankind's destruction of the Earth continues to accelerate regardless of the increasingly frantic warnings of scientists and environmentalists.

Don't worry, though: The Universe & the Earth & Nature will all be fine without humankind. As it turns out, humankind's existence isn't essential. The sun will continue rising and setting and flowers will continue blooming even when the human population reaches zero and civilization becomes dust.
