Humans explored the moon more than 40 years ago. They are now heading towards the Mars, and digging dip into Martian meteorites in search of extraterrestrial life. While they continue to explore their boundaries and try to find their purpose in this universe, nature continues to test the limits of human strength to fight back, on this very planet. Being the most vulnerable yet the most intelligent species of this earth, human race try to push their limit in an effort to survive the odds imposed by decimating natural disasters.
In November 2007, cyclone 'Sidr', an unruly son of nature swept off the coastal region of Bangladesh. 'Kuakata', a small seaside community in the district "Patuakhali" was completely devastated by the cyclone. The retreating tidal waves took thousands of souls into the vastness of the ocean and left most of the people homeless. Most of the families lost their close ones who were involved in deep sea fishing at that time. The frighteningly fierce waves rose so high and entered so deep into the habitable lands that the map of this coastal region changed forever. At least a kilometer of the coastline permanently submerged under the sea. The Sundarbans, world's largest mangrove forest was largely devastated while trying to absorb the shock of the cyclone.
It has been more than four years since the harsh reality of the nightmare called 'Sidr', and the wound it left on the community is still raw, evoking sharp pain every time it is touched by the memories. However, although Sidr stripped away the community off close relatives and resources, it could not rob the undaunted spirit that the people of this area protect in their hearts. The community is turning back again, venturing deeper into the same sea for fishing, which snatched away all their hopes. They've rebuilt their homes, mosques and boats. Sundarbans, the century old guardian, is sprouting new leaves and regaining its vigor.
Ernest Hemingway said “A man can be destroyed, but cannot be defeated." While you think of evidences for such extraordinary claims, take a look at Kuakata. You'll get your answer. Kuakata, with all its relentless and courageous fighters proudly stands there, as the epitome of human resilience.

The image displays a US First Day Cover for the 5-cent Eleanor Roosevelt commemorative stamp Scott (#1236).
Issue Date and Location: The stamp was issued on October 11, 1963, in Washington, D.C., which would have been her 79th birthday.
Commemoration: The cover, with an Art Craft "In Memoriam" cachet, honors Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), the former First Lady who was a significant activist for human rights and served as the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
Quote: It features a quote attributed to Adlai Stevenson: "SHE WOULD RATHER LIGHT A CANDLE THAN CURSE THE DARKNESS AND HER GLOW HAS WARMED THE WORLD".
Mahendra of Nepal - Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (11 June 1920 – 31 January 1972) was King of Nepal from 13 March 1955 until his death in 1972.
He led the 1960 coup d'état, in which he dismissed the government, jailed other political leaders, suspended the constitution, banned political parties, and established an autocratic royal regime. He ruled the country with his Panchayat system for 28 years, with the Panchayat system itself remaining until the introduction of multi-party democracy in 1990. During his reign, Nepal experienced a period of industrial, political and economic change which opened it to the rest of the world for the first time, after the 104-year-long reign of the Rana rulers, who kept the country under an isolationist policy, came to an end in 1951. An autographed First Day Cover of King Mahendra is a significant collector's item because his signature is relatively rare in the philatelic market.

King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (1920–1972) was the ninth King of Nepal, reigning from 13 March 1955 until his death. He is often viewed as one of Nepal’s most influential and controversial figures, credited with modernizing the country’s infrastructure and foreign policy while also dismantling its early democratic experiments.
Key Achievements and Reforms:
Infrastructural Development: He commissioned the construction of the Mahendra Highway (East-West Highway), the first road to span the entire length of Nepal, reducing the need for citizens to travel through India to cross their own country.
Economic Sovereignty: Mahendra established the Nepal Rastra Bank in 1956, which introduced the Nepali Rupee as the sole legal tender, ending the widespread use of Indian currency in Nepal.
Foreign Policy: He pursued a policy of non-alignment and neutrality, maintaining balanced relations with both India and China. He successfully secured Nepal's membership in the United Nations in 1955.
Social and Educational Changes: He founded Tribhuvan University (the country’s first) and implemented the Muluki Ain (National Code) in 1963, which aimed to modernize the legal system and officially banned caste-based discrimination.
Political Rule and Controversy:
The 1960 Coup: In December 1960, Mahendra used his emergency powers to dismiss the first democratically elected government, led by Prime Minister B.P. Koirala. He suspended the constitution, banned all political parties, and imprisoned many leaders.
The Panchayat System: In 1962, he introduced the Panchayat system, a "partyless" political structure that placed absolute power in the hands of the monarch while organizing governance through village and district councils.
Personal Life and Legacy:
Family: He was the son of King Tribhuvan. He had three sons—Birendra (who succeeded him), Gyanendra (the last King of Nepal), and Dhirendra—and three daughters. Literary Work: An avid poet and songwriter, he wrote under the pen name M.B.B. Shah.

Human development is driven by empowered women. But women and girls are still massively under represented and often oppressed - women often don't have the right to own land, control over their income, access to education, or a say in decision-making. We work to help them speak out and demand justice. We aim to see more women in positions of power and leadership, living free from violence, and with greater control over resources.
Photo: Rebecca is training to become the first female mason in her community. This vocational centre in South Sudan, supported by Oxfam, is helping women branch out into careers that were not previously open to them, such as mechanics and electricians. Students are getting to work on their Human Ecology Class projects. This semester we have a wide variety of projects going on such as film advocacy, star charting, soap making, trailblazing, dive platform construction, up-cycling, and more.
