Earlier today while shooting Derek up in the Tenderloin District, I ran into Frida. Frida asked if she could sit for a portrait as well and I told her more about my $2 Portrait Project and she said ok.
Frida was born and raised in San Francisco. I asked Frida if she had any kids and she told me she did. She said she had 11 of them. The oldest one was 26 she said and the youngest was 6. She also said she had 10 grandkids.
Frida told me that one of her sons had just almost been killed last month but that God saved him. She said that he was shot in a case of mistaken identity by someone when he was coming out of his house. Thank God he saved him for us she said. I asked Frida if she saw her children a lot and she smiled back and said every day.
Frida told me that she had her 11 different children with 3 different men. Two were Puerto Rican, she added. Frida told me that all three of the men were dead now.
Frida and I talked a bit about her being out on the street. She told me that she had had an alcohol problem but that she was over it now and better. She told me that it was hard work being out on the street. She said that a lot of people will just rush right past her saying "get a job." She said what they didn't understand was that this *was* her job. That asking people for money is a lot of hard work. Especially for a woman she added. "All the time men are coming up to me and saying 'Hey Baby,'" she told me.
I told Frida that I had four kids and she smiled and asked if they were all with the same woman. I told her they were and she laughed and said, oh well, not me.
Frida was a friendly woman who smiled a lot. She seemed very happy with her life and very proud of her children.
The 143,404 square metres satellite building accommodates international flights departing and arriving at KLIA. Passengers have to travel to the satellite building via the Aerotrain. There is a wide array of duty-free shops and prestige brand boutiques in the satellite building. This includes international brands such as Burberry, Harrods, Montblanc, Salvatore Ferragamo and Mango. Among all international labels available within the terminal, some boutiques such as Harrods are only available in the airport. A number of restaurants and international airlines' lounges are available as well as an Airside Transit Hotel.
Within the terminal, wireless internet (Wifi) is provided free of charge. The terminal also has prayer rooms, showers and massage service. Various lounge areas are provided, some including children's play areas and movie lounge, broadcasting movie and sport channels. Fragment of my belowed grand-father's library right before I started to dismantle it. The painting over the door represents Godzilla burning Warsaw's Royal Castle with atomic breath. My Grand Father was grand admirer of Warsaw, connoisseur of city's history and first Homo Varsoviensis. At the same time demonology and bestiaries stayed firmly between his multiple interest. He used to go to cinema to watch Godzilla movies with me when I was kid. The painting was one of my Xmas gifs to him in the early 90's. I bought the "old town" landscape (probably painted out of postcard) at Kolo flea market and painted Godzilla over it. It hung in his workshop during more than two decades :) Now in Pawel Polit collection.
Tuesday 13 August 2013 - Day 25 - Llulluch'apampa / Llulluchapampa (3,650m) - Abra de Huarmiwanusca / Warmiwañusca / Dead Woman's Pass (4,200m) - Pacaymayo Alto campsite (3,595m) - Runkurakay / Runccuracay (3,760 m) - Runkuraqay / Runccuracay Pass (3,985m) - Chaquiqocha (3,576m) - Phuyupatamarka / Phuyupatamarca (3,650m)
Day 3 on the Camino Inka features the (in)famous Abra de Huarmiwanusca / Warmiwañusca (4,200 m / 13,780 ft) aka Dead Woman's Pass - the highest point of the trek. The condition of the trail and our Huayhuash acclimatisation made the 550 m ascent from the Llulluch'apampa / Llulluchapampa campsite easy going.
Great views from the pass, both back down the valley we'd ascended and also ahead into the Pacaymayo valley, which featured a LOT of stone steps..... These were to prove hard going on the knees as we dropped 800 m to the Pacaymayo Alto campsite (3,595 m). After coffee and an early sandwich at the Pacaymayo checkpoint it was time to start climbing again, with the small circular Inca tambo (inn) at Runkurakay / Runccuracay (3,760 m) providing a beacon to aim for, and then more up to reach the Runkuraqay / Runccuracay Pass (3,985 m) by which time the views were a little less good, as cloud clung to the peaks of the Vilcabamba range.
According to the trip notes the post-Runkuraqay / Runccuracay Pass section of the path is "paved with the original Inca stones" - my main memory is of our first Inca tunnel, yet more steps, colourful flowers and - in time - the Inca ruins at Sayaqmarka / Sayacmarca (3,625m) "the place with a dominant view", which we didn't visit. Not long after Sayaqmarka / Sayacmarca the path entered beautiful bamboo forests. Very zen.
A leisurely lunch at Chaquiqocha (3,576m) looking out over the Aobamba Valley, and then onwards through forests, Inca tunnels and - eventually - our final campsite, Phuyupatamarka / Phuyupatamarca (3,650m). En route, a few flashes of bright green as packs of parakeets wooshed by, beautiful flowers and a stunning section of colourful moss covering the cliffside. The clouds gathered too.
The aptly named 'Town in the Clouds' camp proved to be packed, understandably so once we saw the views further south, not just the Inca ruins just below the campsite, but ridge upon forested ridge, snow sprinkled to our east, dramatic sunlight streaked clouds, rain and rainbows, and the first mobile phone signal since Ollantaytambo (probably - I didn't have my phone with me) courtesy of Aguas Calientes nestling in the Urubamba Valley 1,610 m (1 vertical mile) below.
All in all the best day of the trek by some margin. According to my calculations we climbed (and descended) over 1,000m / 3280 ft over the course of the day despite there being no net change in altitude.

Week 7 beginning August 5, 2013 and ending August 9, 2013.
The seventh week of camp has ended and we have just one more week left of the 2013 camp season! We had a lot going on at camp this week! Our CITs had a wonderful trip to the shore! Back home at camp, campers participated in WGDC famous "Puttin on the Hits" show. Campers also competed in color wars, attended the "All camp cookout" and dance party, and a few groups went bowling. One more week to go! Let's make it a great one!

BlackStar:On the Road于04/10/2012from 08/27/2011 to 09/10/2011“离开灯光璀璨的街道就是黑暗，黑暗的尽头是光明，我非走不可。”―― 杰克·凯鲁亚克我非走不可。从东到西，从西到东。每次都是这几个字，每一次再出发。他们生活简单，不修边幅，奇装异服，厌弃工作和学业，拒绝承担任何社会义务，浪迹天涯，蔑视社会秩序，反对世俗陈规和垄断资本统治，地址对外侵略和和宗族隔离，讨厌机器文明，他们永远寻求新的刺激，寻求绝对自由，纵欲，吸毒，沉沦。一次次挑战传统价值标准。他们看起来是那么的嬉皮士，那么地流浪汉一般，似乎无论世界哪一个明亮的角落，都没有办法容的下这样的身影。就像那个永远没有找到的老迪安莫里亚蒂。直到整本书快要读完的时候，我才慢慢感觉到这样垮掉的一代垮掉的身体里面从未垮掉的灵魂。垮掉的一代的产生，跟当时的社会环境一脉相承，或者说，完全是当时的社会形势的产物。二战后的美国，国力强盛，经济发达，一个全球化的时代已经初见端倪。但是，物质上的爆炸式增长并没有让一个自由的灵魂感到满足，相反，在物质的挤压下，个人的感受被压迫了，被忽略了。很多年轻的人感到了迷惘，感到了生命失去了意义。他们的行为之所以垮掉了，是因为他们在巨大的迷惘面前没有麻木，在寻找不到解脱之前无处可逃，无法解脱。所以，垮掉的只是表面上的行为，没有垮掉的是他们的精神。可以说他们迷惘，他们混乱，他们放纵欲望，还是自暴自弃，没有社会责任感。萨尔凭借他的稿费，迪安凭借他的打工费，完完全全可以在那个年代过上安稳舒服或是玩世不恭的日子。他们做了什么：没有目的的派对，深陷矛盾和孤独，不断使自己陷入异乡的落魄，也激情万丈，唱着歌，跳着舞，朗诵着诗歌，也欺骗甚至盗窃，吸食毒品，分享一切体验，跟不同的女人交换并许下海誓山盟的诺言......白天黑夜，他们最快乐的时候，却是踩足了油门在风中驰骋，睁大了眼睛看着外面世界，看赤道线附近那些与世隔绝的孩子们清澈的眼神。迪安到底在找寻什么。老迪安？还是自由，还是牵挂的萨尔。能真切触摸到的，是三千英里凄凉的路途，路途，就是生活。无数次死里逃生，挣扎，矛盾，阴暗，疯狂，奔放的真实。我不得不承认，即便堕落，他们也敢于面对黑暗，更敢于在烈日下奔跑，哪怕耗尽最后一分体力，也不能忍受新泽西上空燥热的空气。当内心比身体更渴望上路的时候，他们的灵魂就能冲破一切束缚。要说疯狂，我只能说我在毕业之后需要我为人生的下一个转折点操心奔波的时候完完全全抛开一切杂念离开了13天。横跨东西海岸的旅行，是我最不后悔的决定。古老的工业古城匹兹堡，超现代与艺术家的殿堂芝加哥，仅以玉米田为亮丽风景线的大中部，拥有最炙热神秘色彩的犹他，孕育着千奇地灵生命的落基山脉，四季常青环保安宁的波特兰，依山傍水的浪漫西雅图.....现在再回想起来的时候，那些细节已经渐渐模糊，只是在我翻看着那50多G的照片的时候又会想起的酸甜苦辣。每过一处风景，恰似一幅铺开的历史长卷。东部的现代激进，中部的保守，中西部的原始自然，西部的悠哉游哉，每个地方的人都描述着他们眼中的世界，每个灵魂里都夹杂了不同的追求与梦想。每个州都是那么风格迥异，从祖上就开始生存和依赖的土地与文化，是人们脸上不尽相同的眼神与表情，是空气里最真实的食物气味与自然气息。真是后悔上路之前没有做更多的研究，了解他们更多的历史与文化，或许我可以看见更多不一样的东西。站在几十米被千古沙尘风化的拱桥之下，就连手中最大的广角镜也难以在脚下的一个地点将其完美的囊括。仰望着这岁月漂洗过的天然艺术品，我显得是那么的渺小。不由想到张爱玲说过，时间与空间一样，有它的值钱地段，也有大片的荒芜。当漫天的星星划过天际，当我轻轻攀爬到两扇大地之窗的脚下坐下，当一弯皎洁的月光透过云层在最后一瞬恰好将它照亮时，仿佛也照亮了我心中对星空的无限幻想。我屏住呼吸，轻轻按掉快门线。那一首歌的时间的等待，刚好放的是Jordin Sparks的worth the wait.人生，不就像窗外变幻的风景，从一个地方，到另一个地方。我们带着各种心情滋味走过的4000mile，不是从西到东5个多小时的飞行航线可以取代的距离，我们所经历的，也绝不仅仅是旅行。每一次抬头看见墙上密歇根湖日出的大照片，我就可以想起那个双眼疼痛浑身快要散架的清晨，想起那些，让我满鞋黄沙还是不顾一切向太阳升起的方向奔跑的快乐与感动。那是大自然的表情。让我平静，敬畏并感动的表情，也是让我喜欢上风景题材的原因。想起阿甘。想起鲍勃迪伦。想起天地玄黄里的无数个镜头。我们没有理想，流浪没有方向。只是梦中的麦田，守着一片金黄。那永远到不了的远方，在路上，和我唱，这一首歌。如果我有方向，那就是远方。钢铁是怎样炼成，流浪不靠坚强。如果我有枪，早就上了镗。如果能得到玫瑰，我只留下方向。总是梦中麦田，守着每一片金黄。丧失我的理想，用生命把它埋葬。总是梦中麦田，守着每一片金黄。丧失我的理想，用生命把它埋葬。对于生活，每个人都有不一样的定义，对于精彩，每个人都有不同的标准。羡慕他人有着不平凡经历的时候，是否想过那样的生活真正属于自己，是否真正的热爱，真正愿意倾其所有，像追逐朝阳和夕阳一样不顾一切地和转瞬即逝的时间赛跑。在我的无边无尽的想象里，我真希望，这样的奔跑，永无止息。“于是，在美国太阳下了山，我坐在河边破旧的码头上，望着新泽西上空的长天，心里琢磨那篇一直绵延到西海岸的广袤的原始土地，那条没完没了的路，一切怀有梦想的人们，我知道这是Iowa州允许孩子哭喊的地方，一定有孩子在哭喊，我知道今夜可以看到许多星星，你知不知道熊星座就是上帝？今夜金星一定低垂，在祝福大地的黑夜完全降临之前，把它的闪闪光点洒落在草原上，使所有的河流变得暗淡，笼罩了山峰，掩盖了海岸，除了衰老以外，谁都不知道谁的遭遇。这时候我想起了迪安莫里亚蒂，我甚至想起了我们永远没有找到的老迪安莫里亚蒂，我真想迪安莫里亚蒂。”道路，就是生活，生活，就是要走的路。我还年轻，我渴望上路。你的负担将变成礼物。你受的苦将照亮你的路。 来自http://dd.mu/+Ou7=N

Amanita muscaria, the classic European "toadstool" is probably the most depicted and recognized mushroom on earth.
Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly amanita is a poisonous and psychoactive basidiomycete fungus, one of many in the genus Amanita. Native throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Amanita muscaria has been unintentionally introduced to many countries in the southern hemisphere, generally as a symbiont with pine plantations, and is now a true cosmopolitan species. It associates with various deciduous and coniferous trees. The quintessential toadstool, it is a large white-gilled, white-spotted, usually deep red mushroom, one of the most recognizable and widely encountered in popular culture.
Although it is generally considered poisonous, deaths from its consumption are extremely rare, and it is eaten as a food in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America after parboiling. Amanita muscaria is noted for its hallucinogenic properties, with its main psychoactive constituent being the compound muscimol.
The name of the mushroom in many European languages is thought to be derived from its use as an insecticide, when sprinkled in milk. This practice has been recorded from Germanic- and Slavic-speaking parts of Europe, as well as the Vosges region and pockets elsewhere in France, and Romania.
Amanita muscaria varies considerably in its morphology. A 2006 molecular phylogenetic study of different regional populations of A. muscaria by mycologist József Geml and colleagues found three distinct clades within this species representing, roughly, Eurasian, Eurasian "subalpine", and North American populations. Specimens belonging to all three clades have been found in Alaska; this has led to the hypothesis that this was the center of diversification of this species.
A large conspicuous mushroom, Amanita muscaria is generally common and numerous where it grows, and is often found in groups with basidiocarps in all stages of development. Fly agaric fruiting bodies emerge from the soil looking like a white egg, covered in the white warty material of the universal veil. Dissecting the mushroom at this stage will reveal a characteristic yellowish layer of skin under the veil which assists in identification. As the fungus grows, the red color appears through the broken veil and the warts become less prominent; they do not change in size but are reduced relative to the expanding skin area. The cap changes from globose to hemispherical, and finally to plate-like and flat in mature specimens. Fully grown, the bright red cap is usually around 8–20 cm (3–8 in) in diameter, although larger specimens have been found. The red color may fade after rain and in older mushrooms. After emerging from the ground, the cap is covered with numerous small white to yellow pyramid-shaped warts. These are remnants of the universal veil, a membrane that encloses the entire mushroom when it is still very young. The free gills are white, as is the spore print. At the base is a bulb that bears universal veil remnants in the form of two to four distinct rings or ruffs. Between the basal universal veil remnants and gills are remnants of the partial veil (which covers the gills during development) in the form of a white ring. It can be quite wide and flaccid with age. There is generally no associated smell other than a mild earthiness.

Infernal Overdrive is a heavy rock and roll band formed in early 2008 when Marc Schleicher (fmr. Quintaine Americana [Wikipedia, MySpace, AllMusic], Cracktorch [MySpace], Antler, Liquor Tricks [MySpace]) of Allston , Mass. started jamming with Mike Bennett (fmr. Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook]) in Red Bank. Soon they got Rich Miele (fmr. Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook]) on board playing second lead guitar. During some of their early shows, Jake Metz (Godzero [MySpace]) joined the band on bass, but he was soon replaced by Keith Schleicher.

They journey in the last of the V8 interceptors, proving themselves worthy of the Small Stone pedigree. Infernal Overdrive Kick into Gear
With production by Andrew Schneider (Throttlerod, The Brought Low, Hackman) and mastering by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance East in Boston, there’s no doubt that New Jersey riff rockers Infernal Overdrive are going for that Small Stone Records sound. The four tracks that comprise their new self-titled EP fall in line with the kind of straightforward guitar-led rock the Detroit label has proffered for well over a decade now, and with a similar southern/classic ‘70s influence to New York’s The Brought Low, Infernal Overdrive seem remarkably conscious of what they’re doing sonically. More so than you might expect for a band just releasing their first EP.
The story goes that when guitarist/vocalist Marc Schleicher (ex-Cracktorch [MySpace], Antler) moved from Massachusetts to central New Jersey, he got hooked up with drummer Mike Bennett and guitarist/backing vocalist Rich Miele (both ex-Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook]). Keith Schleicher (relation assumed) was added on bass and Infernal Overdrive began rocking out early 2008. The EP was recorded over two days in February and four in April, and though that seems quick, none of the songs feels rushed or underdone. Schneider, who also shows up on extra backing vocals, makes his mark sound-wise in the tone of Schleicher and Miele’s guitars and Bennett’s snare sound, which has the same pop Schneider has become known for – not too bright, but able to cut through the mix and propel the songs forward. Some of Schleicher’s leads, as on EP closer “Motor,” feel a little too thought out, too structured where what I’d like to hear is a little bluesy ‘70s recklessness, but they get the job done nonetheless, and the vocals are never out of place.
Although the highway for which it’s named runs down through the whole East Coast, there’s no question that when Infernal Overdrive open the EP with “I-95,” they’re talking about Jersey. The song is a southern-hued guitar rocker that sets the tone well for the three tracks that follow with an ear toward rock traditionalism and, once again, like-minded Small Stone heavy-hitters Sasquatch, Dixie Witch, et al. It’s hard to argue with the approach when it works as well as it does on the speedy “The Edge,” which forgoes central Jersey’s reputation for heavy psychedelia in the style of Monster Magnet in favor of Halfway to Gone’s stripped-down take on rock. “Duel” slows down the pace somewhat but still keeps a mid?paced groove that makes use of some well?placed lead lines that start the song reminding me of Iron Maiden filtered through Nebula’s druggy haze. Only “Motor,” which devolves into an extended jam that brings the track to a total of just under 12 minutes, is longer, as the songs on Infernal Overdrive go in order from shortest to longest. Whether or not that’s on purpose on the part of the band, I don’t know – I’d imagine at least putting “Motor” last is – but I suppose it’s as good a method of organization as any.
There’s a short message from the Devil after “Motor” finishes up, and that’s the end of the EP. Infernal Overdrive are out relatively quick when you consider their first release is only 26 minutes and three of the four songs take up about 11 of it. No complaints though, as the four-piece know precisely how to get the most out of their sound and show exactly that on these tracks. It’s a hell of an investment to make with a self-released debut to hook up with the likes of Schneider and Zampiello, but Infernal Overdrive make the most of Schleicher and co.’s collected experience, and come off sounding confident and notably mature for a band who’s been together less than three years. It may not be changing the game, but Infernal Overdrive is definitely worth checking out for anyone who wants to hook into some solid and unpretentious heavy rock.

A couple years ago we reviewed a strong up-and-coming Jersey band Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook]. Well, it seems they dissolved and morphed into Infernal Overdrive. The new band is two parts Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook] (drummer Mike Bennett and guitarist/backing vocalist Rich Miele), one part Cracktorch [MySpace], Antler (guitarist/vocalist Marc Schleicher) and one part brother (bassist Keith Schleicher). Mike contacted me letting me know the band formed after Marc relocated from Boston and set up shop in Jersey. He sent along the EP for my listening pleasure. And a pleasure it is! The songs are baked in southern ‘70s hard rock with catchy riffs and plenty of power rumbling in the pipes. The info is sketchy but according the record’s liner notes, the four-song EP was recorded this year in Brooklyn, NY over five days (Feb 27, 28 & April 17, 18, 24, 25). Production was handled by Andrew Schneider (Throttlerod, The Brought Low, Hackman) with mastering by Nick Zampiello. Fans of our site will immediately make the Small Stone connection and that seems to be where the band are heading as the vibe is defiantly Detroit retro.
Take for instance “I-95” which opens the disc with a solid guitar wail and foot-stomping drum beat. Tambourine is added for flavor but the song bellows like fellow Boston-natives Roadsaw, mixing biker thunder with a Pat Travers/Leslie West riff-fest. Second track, “The Edge” is pure old school Nugent, including the repeat riff and frantic, almost MC5 delivery. Schleicher voice is ragged and ready to rock. The drums hammer and the bass drives laying down a solid bed for some sexy solo leads. “Duel” has more Fu Manchu in the groove. It’s mostly in the chorus, but the build in the verse is still very Scott Hill/Brant Bjork. The track also boasts our favorite solo - frayed, not over played and sparked with cosmic energy. “Motor” is a 13-minute stoner masterpiece. A heavy bottom end brings to mind Sabbath, Sasquatch and Mountain. The riff is clean but thick with a layered solo painting in all the little nuances - perfect for a psychedelic ride. The echo on the vocals adds to the songs dripping mysticism while the guitar is allowed to float, pierce and melt the brain. Yeah, it only four songs, but dude, sometime that’s all you need when they’re this good.

I recently had a chance to hear some new material from thee guys and I'll tell you right now, this is a band to be on the look out for. They're going places. Their sound is straight up southern stoner rock. If I had to compare them, I'd say they're a bit harder version of The Brought Low. The story goes that when guitarist/vocalist Marc Schleicher (ex-Cracktorch [MySpace], Antler) moved from Massachusetts to central New Jersey, he got hooked up with drummer Mike Bennett and guitarist/backing vocalist Rich Miele (both ex-Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook]). Keith Schleicher (relation assumed) was added on bass and Infernal Overdrive began rocking out early 2008. The EP was recorded over two days in February and four in April, and though that seems quick, none of the songs feels rushed or underdone. Schneider, who also shows up on extra backing vocals, makes his mark sound-wise in the tone of Schleicher and Miele’s guitars and Bennett’s snare sound, which has the same pop Schneider has become known for – not too bright, but able to cut through the mix and propel the songs forward. Some of Schleicher’s leads, as on EP closer “Motor,” feel a little too thought out, too structured where what I’d like to hear is a little bluesy ‘70s recklessness, but they get the job done nonetheless, and the vocals are never out of place.
Although the highway for which it’s named runs down through the whole East Coast, there’s no question that when Infernal Overdrive open the EP with “I-95,” they’re talking about Jersey. The song is a southern-hued guitar rocker that sets the tone well for the three tracks that follow with an ear toward rock traditionalism and, once again, like-minded Small Stone heavy-hitters Sasquatch, Dixie Witch, et al. It’s hard to argue with the approach when it works as well as it does on the speedy “The Edge,” which forgoes central Jersey’s reputation for heavy psychedelia in the style of Monster Magnet in favor of Halfway to Gone’s stripped-down take on rock. “Duel” slows down the pace somewhat but still keeps a mid?paced groove that makes use of some well?placed lead lines that start the song reminding me of Iron Maiden filtered through Nebula’s druggy haze. Only “Motor,” which devolves into an extended jam that brings the track to a total of just under 12 minutes, is longer, as the songs on Infernal Overdrive go in order from shortest to longest. Whether or not that’s on purpose on the part of the band, I don’t know – I’d imagine at least putting “Motor” last is – but I suppose it’s as good a method of organization as any.
There’s a short message from the Devil after “Motor” finishes up, and that’s the end of the EP. Infernal Overdrive are out relatively quick when you consider their first release is only 26 minutes and three of the four songs take up about 11 of it. No complaints though, as the four-piece know precisely how to get the most out of their sound and show exactly that on these tracks. It’s a hell of an investment to make with a self-released debut to hook up with the likes of Schneider and Zampiello, but Infernal Overdrive make the most of Schleicher and co.’s collected experience, and come off sounding confident and notably mature for a band who’s been together less than three years. It may not be changing the game, but Infernal Overdrive is definitely worth checking out for anyone who wants to hook into some solid and unpretentious heavy rock.

A couple years ago we reviewed a strong up-and-coming Jersey band Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook]. Well, it seems they dissolved and morphed into Infernal Overdrive. The new band is two parts Loud Earth [Reverb Nation, Facebook] (drummer Mike Bennett and guitarist/backing vocalist Rich Miele), one part Cracktorch [MySpace], Antler (guitarist/vocalist Marc Schleicher) and one part brother (bassist Keith Schleicher). Mike contacted me letting me know the band formed after Marc relocated from Boston and set up shop in Jersey. He sent along the EP for my listening pleasure. And a pleasure it is! The songs are baked in southern ‘70s hard rock with catchy riffs and plenty of power rumbling in the pipes. The info is sketchy but according the record’s liner notes, the four-song EP was recorded this year in Brooklyn, NY over five days (Feb 27, 28 & April 17, 18, 24, 25). Production was handled by Andrew Schneider (Throttlerod, The Brought Low, Hackman) with mastering by Nick Zampiello. Fans of our site will immediately make the Small Stone connection and that seems to be where the band are heading as the vibe is defiantly Detroit retro.
Take for instance “I-95” which opens the disc with a solid guitar wail and foot-stomping drum beat. Tambourine is added for flavor but the song bellows like fellow Boston-natives Roadsaw, mixing biker thunder with a Pat Travers/Leslie West riff-fest. Second track, “The Edge” is pure old school Nugent, including the repeat riff and frantic, almost MC5 delivery. Schleicher voice is ragged and ready to rock. The drums hammer and the bass drives laying down a solid bed for some sexy solo leads. “Duel” has more Fu Manchu in the groove. It’s mostly in the chorus, but the build in the verse is still very Scott Hill/Brant Bjork. The track also boasts our favorite solo - frayed, not over played and sparked with cosmic energy. “Motor” is a 13-minute stoner masterpiece. A heavy bottom end brings to mind Sabbath, Sasquatch and Mountain. The riff is clean but thick with a layered solo painting in all the little nuances - perfect for a psychedelic ride. The echo on the vocals adds to the songs dripping mysticism while the guitar is allowed to float, pierce and melt the brain. Yeah, it only four songs, but dude, sometime that’s all you need when they’re this good.

I recently had a chance to hear some new material from thee guys and I'll tell you right now, this is a band to be on the look out for. They're going places. Their sound is straight up southern stoner rock. If I had to compare them, I'd say they're a bit harder version of The Brought Low. Checkout the usual social media spots (links below) to hear what I'm talking about and keep up to date with all their happenings because you'll certainly be hearing from them again.
Here I took a Friday off, drove a hundred miles, got here before the sun came up. I wanted to get some sunrise and fall leaf photos at Brasstown Bald, and this is what I found when I got there. And it didn't come out of the clouds till 10:30. Oh well......maybe next year?

De estilo gótico-mudéjar fue fundada en el siglo XIII aunque sus restos mas antiguos son del siglo XIV, ha sido remodelada posteriormente en los siglos XVIII y XIX. Es sede de las Hermandades El Dulce Nombre y La Soledad.
Templo formado en su interior por planta de cinco naves con capilla mayor cuadrada y coro a los pies, separadas por pilares cuadrangulares sostenidos por arcos apuntados con cubiertas en forma de artesa, con tirantas en la nave central y colgadiza en las laterales. El presbiterio se cubre con bóveda de media naranja sobre pechinas, sin tambor, ni linterna.
La Torre-fachada, de estilo mudéjar,está situada a los pies de la iglesia y presenta arco ojival ciego con cuerpo de campanas y cruz de estilo barroco (1757). Se remata por chapitel ovalado con recubrimiento cerámico y jarrones del mismo material en los flancos. Junto a la torre se encuentra el retablo cerámico de "Ntra. Señora de la soledad".
La portada de la epístola es de estilo manierista realizada por Diego López Bueno y presenta vano adintelado con alfiz quebrado, rematado con frontón partido con escultura de San Lorenzo Mártir en su hornacina, y a los lados altos relieves con las armas del Santo y dos parrillas sobre fuego. Se encuentra flanqueada por cerámicas dedicadas a las animas, a Ntro. Padre Jesús del Gran Poder y a Maria Stma. del Dulce Nombre y por escultura del Cardenal Spinola.
La portada del evangelio presenta frontón curvo con pilastras a los lados en cuyo tímpano están la parrilla y la palma de San Lorenzo. A los lados tiene unos roelos decorados con mútilos coronados con floreros.
La sillería del coro es de estilo barroco obra de Juan Leonardo del siglo XVIII.
El retablo mayor está compuesto por banco, dos cuerpos, tres calles y ático y fue arquitectónicamente comenzado por Martínez Montañés (1632) y terminado por los hermanos Francisco y Felipe de Rivas (1652). Se encuentra presidido en el primer cuerpo por esculturas de "San Lorenzo recibiendo los tesoros de la Iglesia de manos del Papa Sixto II" y "San Lorenzo dando limosnas a los pobres", y en el segundo cuerpo "Flagelación del Santo y su Martirio en la parrilla. Sobre el ático imagen de "San Lorenzo, el "Crucificado" y "ángeles tenantes". Sagrario manifestador obra de Diego López Bueno (1625) en el primer cuerpo con pinturas de Francisco Pacheco. A ambos lados del retablo mayor se encuentran pintura realzada por Juan de Uceda "Cristo servido por los ángeles después de sufrir las tres tentaciones del diablo en el desierto" y pintura "Triunfo de la Eucaristía" de Francisco Pimentel.
Obras de interés:
Situada a los pies de la epístola se encuentra la capilla de la "Virgen de Rocamanor" fresco del siglo XIV de estilo gótico.
En la epístola se sitúa la capilla del "Dulce Nombre" presidida por las imágenes titulares "Nuestra Señora del Dulce Nombre" y "Nuestro Padre Jesús ante Anas", obras de Castillo Lastrucci (1624) ambas de estilo barroco.
Retablo de "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" obra del siglo XIV con lienzos de "Santo Domingo, San Francisco y los Santos Juanes".
El retablo de "San José con el Niño" es obra de Pimentel y el titular, de estilo barroco, de Cristóbal Ramos.
En la capilla sacramental, obra de Félix Romero (1699) se encuentra el retablo de "la Inmaculada Concepción", realizado por Paniagua(1703) y flanqueada por "San José" y "Santa Ana con la Virgen", y en el ático un "Niño Jesús". Adornan esta capilla los ángeles de Hita del Castillo.
El retablo de "la Virgen de Granada" y del "Crucificado", ambos de estilo barroco, son obra de Fernando Barahona (1682). Se encuentran presididos por esculturas de los titulares obras de Roque Balduque de estilo renacentista (1554).
Retablo del "Santo Cristo del Amparo", de estilo barroco, es obra de Fernando Barahona (1682) presidido por titular también barroco realizado por Dionisio Rivas.
Capilla de "Santa Ana". Escultura atribuida a Montés de Oca de estilo barroco situada en la capilla bautismal.
Capilla de la "Milagrosa" presidida por talla moderna de la titular y pintura mural del "Cristo de las fatigas" obra del siglo XVI.
Pintura de "La Sagrada Familia", de estilo renacentista, realizada por Villegas Marmolejo (1595) y se encuentra situada en el retablo del "Santo Rostro".
Pintura de "la Anunciación" y "la Sagrada Familia" ambas de Villegas Marmolejo (VXI) y de estilo renacentista.

A look at Harborne Library on the High Street in Harborne from the opposite pavement, mainly at the former Masonic Hall building.
It was built in 1879 as a Masonic Hall. Harborne Library opened here in 1892.
The Corporation purchased the Masonic Hall in the High Street for £2,000 for the purpose of conversion to a Public library. The Hall had been built in 1879 and had housed the Harborne Lodge, Tudor 1792 of the Province of Staffordshire. The architect was A. E. Phipson, a local man living in Metchley Lane, who in partnership with his son, is credited with designing several buildings in Harborne of a similar date.
Some structural alterations were made, and meanwhile the librarian, Mr Herbert Shuttleworth, and his assistant were appointed. There was a newsroom with papers and periodicals, and it was decided that this would open ahead of the lending library on 27 August 1892. A small crowd made 'a determined rush to obtain the honour of being first' to enter, Police-Sergeant Willis ahead of them. (Harborne Herald).
The formal opening of the library was on 12 November 1892, and the ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Birmingham. Rather tactlessly, his speech referred to the greater benefits to Harborne by annexation, than of that to Birmingham! He also regretted 'the preponderance of works of fiction on the shelves' .
At this time there were just 2000 volumes available for loan. A year later, only 220 were children's books. There were 580 registered borrowers, borrowing an average of 153 books daily in the first year.
Both the lending library and the newsroom occupied the upper floor of the building, the ground floor being used for other purposes.
Not until 1925 were the public able to 'browse the shelves'. Until that time, they had been served with books on request at the counter.
During the Second World War the basement became an air-raid shelter, and until blackout provision could be made the library closed at sunset.
During the 1960s major alterations were made to the building. The adult library moved downstairs into what had, for many years, been the newsroom. A new children's library was constructed upstairs, described at the time in the Birmingham Mail as the Pride of the new Library. Sadly the new front door was received with less enthusiasm, and was the subject of several letters to the press! The most significant alteration since then has been the expansion into the adjoining building, providing on the ground floor a new Help Desk, and space to house the People's Network computers providing free public internet access.
The library closed in the autumn of 2005 for a major refurbishment which included the installation of a public lift, disabled person's toilet and baby changing facilities. The library opened again on 10 July 2006 with bright and attractive new furniture and fittings. The opening hours have been increased and a new music CD loan service has been introduced.
