This hotshot Intermodal I044 would be creeping into Lakeland Junction with a solo ES40DC upfront leading Tropicana cars and lots of intermodal for Jacksonvilles Duval Ramp. It would be a gloomy evening after it being very sunny and hot earlier in the day.

For my first shot of the 2020’s, we see CSX K429 cutting through heavy rainfall by MP417 on the Etowah Subdivision just after 6pm as it rolls by at track speed, getting ready to knock down the clear signal at Wyvern a mile south of here. While I would have preferred that they had arrived 30 minutes sooner while their was still decent light out to get the Canadian National SD75I leading two CN Standard Cab Dash 8’s, I’ll take the result of my newest adventure in photography, night shooting using only the natural light around me. 1-2-20

Havent been out for a while after a busy few weeks at work, but headed down to Aldeburgh for dawn today and you could definitely tell it was December!

Hotshot, BN #11 or the now ZCHCPTL1, zips along at 60 MPH on the Aurora sub. I remember not being super pleased with this as the leader. BNSF1000,BN7862,BN4098. After all these years, I am still not pleased about the BNSF. From blued out Fujichrome.

While N&W 611 does its Manassas, VA. station work on the northbound leg of an Alexandria-Charlottesville round trip, a trio of SOUTHERN SDs blast south through town with a hotshot out of Alexandria, VA. Highball!

This is a photo of the first evening of my Holiday in France last week. The sun was setting on the beautiful Beach of Meneham in Brittany. I took this shot with my Canon EOS 350D and 18-55mm Lens and used an aperture of f/16 to keep the whole scene sharp.

"Pop quiz, hotshot. There's a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do?"

CPKC’s new daily northbound intermodal, 181, seems to be seeing mild success, with the train I shot on 5/20 being all of 20 cars long with two KCSM GEVOs on the point

With a friendly wave from the crew, southbound intermodal train Q031 blasts past the VRE Leeland Road Station near Fredericksburg, Virginia on the afternoon of November 14, 2020.

A hotshot z-train heads east through Skykomish as it gets ready to take on the western side of Stevens Pass. 6-24-23

An early morning ride up the RTA Corridor on TriRail would bring me to familiar scene at Pompano Beach, FL where a horde of buffs had set up north of the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd grade crossing, all in anticipation for one specific train. At 07:37, a set of headlights would pierce through a sheet of rain to the south. The train in question would be the CSX “Office Car Special” business train, P00128, on its return trip back north to Jacksonville, FL. The crew had the three B&O-inspired painted F40PH-2’s runnin’ along at a brisk pace—I’d say 79 mph—on Track 2 under the N Andrews Ave flyover with CSX company executives on-board.

2022 marked the second year in a row in which CSX operated their business train down the entirety of the state of Florida between Jacksonville, Tampa, and Miami, drawing out photographers in significant numbers both times. Unlike the 2021 visit, the train would lay over in Miami overnight between Monday, June 27th and Tuesday, June 28th. P00128 would get the light out of Hialeah Yard at around 06:50 with a straight shot north to SE DYER on the CSX Auburndale Subdivision, making them the hottest train on the mainline.

Mission 141.

On a warm summer's day a matched set of U23B's lead Lehigh Valley 506 west through the lush landscape of New York's Southern Tier, a short way north (railroad west) of the crew change point at Sayre, Pennsylvania. The power is less than a year old and would be the last acquired by the railroad before it was absorbed into Conrail.

One of about 30 of the daily intermodal trains on the Middle Division wastes no time getting up the West Slope coming through the small town of Portage, PA.

The 199 train disturbs a peaceful July afternoon in Franklin Canyon, Santa Fe's entrance to the Bay Area. At the time, seeing a blue and yellow unit leading warbonnets probably would have been a major disappointment. However, a freshly painted EMD F45 could certainly be considered as good as a warbonnet, if not better.

The training Super Fleet power appears to be a GP60M sandwiched between a pair of GP60 B units. With power sets like this, it isn't hard to see why Franklin Canyon was THE place to go railfan in mid-90s NorCal.

On a sunny summer afternoon, Amtrak's auto train soars above the Neabsco creek marina, just beginning their trip to Florida. For the past hour, the BB desk dispatcher has been hustling CSX trains out of their way, ensuring they get the highball all the way through his territory. Freight roads and passenger roads don't always coexist easy, but the auto train is pretty 'hot' in railroad parlance, and not much slows the down or gets in their way.

As the Holiday shopping season swings into full pickup, the CSX RF&P sub adds a few extra trains a day of holiday traffic- mostly intermodal containers and UPS trailers. Referred to by the crews as 'trailer trains', they are the hottest trains on the railroad. Normally CSXT will run these with 1 up front and 1 DPU, but lately some have had 2 up front in case of mechanical failure. Seen here is I033, a southbound holiday extra, bombing through the 2 track at ALX. While freights often get held for passenger trains on Main 1 to the right of the fence, known as the 'penalty box', this train will have a straight shot through to Richmond as the BD Desk hustles to move everything in front of them out of the way so they can highball at track speed.

The westbound Kootenay Valley Railway Hotshot is seen at the east siding switch of Tochty, B.C., on the Cranbrook (formerly Nelson) subdivision. At Curzon Junction, near Yahk, it will take the less-used Nelson subdivision through Nelson to Castlegar and Trail to supply the paper mill at smelter in those respective cities.

Two GE's blast by the photographer at 60 plus as they head west in the early morning near Williams, Arizona.

This hotshot Z-train out of Portland, OR, rolls along the mighty Mississippi River. The train is passing under the brand new highway 53 bridge that is closed currently due to road work between Savanna and Sabula. The train is around 140 miles from their destination at Cicero Yard in Chicago, IL. Surprised to see the old MAC on this hotshot.

Columbus to Worcester Intermodal Q022 screams around the curve at CP 60 in Spencer, MA.

The fog is thick on the morning of December 21, 2016, as westbound NS freight train 15T screams its way past the N&W depot with a CP Railway engine on the point in the community of Emory, VA.

Catching a bright spot of "magic light" on an otherwise cloudy afternoon the daily priority Atlanta to Dallas stack train 169 zips by the east end of the yard at Pearl. Rather nice elevated view that has opened up with the new Pearson Road overpass, complete with wide shoulders on the approaches for railfan parking. Those Belle Aces are starting to look pretty shabby, but at least no CP interlopers this day!

CN train Z149 (Montreal, QC, to Markham, IL, stacks/hotshot trailers) rolls through West CN Jct. in Harvey, Illinois on CSX's former GTW Elsdon Sub. Z149 is leaving the CSX and taking the connection up to CN's former IC Chicago Sub, before backing his train into Markham Yard.

Thanks to flooding along the Mississippi River, for several days, a number of trains that would normally run through that region on different railroads were rerouted to take different routes & railroads, including a couple of trains that were rerouted to take CSX's W&A Subdivision. Here, we see R132, a rerouted intermodal with some rare (for the W&A) Kansas City Southern power on the point as it rolls at track speed in Acworth. 6-5-19
