New England College will host a Town Hall Meeting for Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz, Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at 10:00 AM, in the Simon Center Great Room, located on NEC’s Henniker campus. Cruz’s Town Hall Meeting is the thirteenth in a series of NEC Town Hall Meetings featuring announced presidential candidates, leading up to New Hampshire’s First in the Nation Presidential Primary (#FITN).

*************************************

HENNIKER, N.H. — Ted Cruz is feeling the Bern. Sort of.

At a town-hall-style event in New Hampshire on Wednesday, the Texas senator identified Bernie Sanders as an unlikely kindred spirit while describing the failings of Washington.

“Actually in diagnosing the problem, I agree in many ways with Bernie Sanders,” Mr. Cruz said. “Media folks, they’re very puzzled when they say, ‘Gosh, Ted, you sound exactly like Bernie saying it is all big money and lobbyists and corruption.’ Well, you know what? That’s right, it is. Washington is corrupt.”

Mr. Cruz repeated a familiar campaign refrain: that the country’s greatest political divide is not between Republicans and Democrats but between “career politicians” from both parties and the people they represent.

Eventually, Mr. Cruz did get around to the caveat: He and Mr. Sanders, whose platform includes myriad tax hikes and tuition-free college, disagree on virtually every policy remedy.

“His solution is, ‘So we need even more Washington, we need the government to take over even more of the economy and our lives,’” Mr. Cruz said. “I think that solution is nuts.”

Mr. Sanders has long been a target of gentle ridicule from Mr. Cruz on the stump, though his most pointed vitriol is almost always reserved for President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

After his victory in the Iowa caucuses victory on Monday, Mr. Cruz allowed himself a peek at the vote tallies across the aisle.

“The Democrats here seem to be in a virtual tie between one candidate who admits he’s a socialist and the other candidate who pretends she’s not,” Mr. Cruz said to laughs. “I wish them both luck.”

Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz (born December 22, 1970) is an American politician and the junior U.S. Senator from Texas. He is a Republican candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election.

Cruz attended elementary and high school in and around Houston, graduated from Princeton University in 1992, and then from Harvard Law School in 1995. Between 1999 and 2003, Cruz was the director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission, an associate deputy attorney general at the United States Department of Justice, and domestic policy advisor to President George W. Bush on the 2000 George W. Bush presidential campaign. He served as Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 to 2008, appointed by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. He was the first Hispanic, and the longest-serving solicitor general in Texas history. Cruz was also an adjunct professor of law from 2004 to 2009 at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, where he taught U.S. Supreme Court litigation.

Cruz ran for the Senate seat vacated by fellow Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, and in July 2012 defeated Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst during the Republican primary runoff, 57%–43%. Cruz then defeated former state Representative Paul Sadler in the November 2012 general election, winning 56%–41%. He is the first Hispanic American to serve as a U.S. senator representing Texas, and is one of three Senators of Cuban descent. Cruz chairs the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, Federal Rights and Agency Activities, and is also the chairman of the United States Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness. In November 2012, he was appointed vice-chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Cruz began campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination in March 2015. During the primary campaign, his base of support has been mainly among social conservatives, though he has had crossover appeal to other factions within his party. His victory in the February 1, 2016 Iowa caucuses marked the first time a Hispanic won a presidential caucus.

This is a photograph from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2019, which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 14th August 2019 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. This race is the penultimate race in the Kia Race Series 2019. The weather was very changeable this evening and was not very suitable for racing. The participants had a very stiff breeze in their faces on the outward stretch and all the way to the 2KM mark within Tullynally. This then became a helpful tailwail for the final KM of the race. There was a heavy shower of rain just before the start of the race.

Starting off many years ago the race was very much a local affair drawing runners from the sounding areas of Mullingar, North East Meath, Cavan, and Longford. However, the race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands and sees participants from all over Ireland. The race offers prizes in all categories. The Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games. As summer moves into autumn the Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the 'unofficial ending' of summer evening road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer evenings there are less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh. One of the show pieces of the race landscape is Tullynally Castle which provides almost 2.5KM of the race route. The name Tullynally is an adaption of 'Tulaigh an Eallaigh' – the Hill of the Swan. The hill overlooks the mythical Lough Derravaragh. Irish folklore legend names the lake as where the Children of Lir, who were turned into swans, were destined to live for 300 years. Tullynally Castle is still a family home to this day. It provides a dramatic and historic setting for the race.

The race begins near the center of the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. Underfoot conditions are good on well maintained tarmacadam roads. The gardens, like the castle are on a grand scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb (passing the Castle) before the race rejoins its outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 1100M from the archway gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish passing the GAA grounds with finish line just outside the local Fire Station.

This year almost 350 took part in the race. It goes without saying that the Castlepollard 5KM has become one of the "must do" road race events in the midlands. Everything that is good about club road racing in Ireland can be found here. There is a great community atmosphere about the race. A very find spread of refreshments are provided afterwards in the Hotel Castlepollard where prize-giving and chatting goes on late into the evening.

Electronic Timing and Event Management are provided by Popup Races and their website is www.popupraces.ie

One of the enduring symbols of the Castlepollard 5KM is the tireless work of Andy MacEoin of North Westmeath AC who has been a visitor to almost every road race in the Midlands and beyond over the past number of months to publicize the event. Many of the participants tonight will have seen Andy's strategically placed advertising signs around other road race routes. Certainly this work, and that of many other members of North Westmeath AC, has paid off well.

Also called Texas Indian Paintbrush, Entireleaf Indian Paintbrush, Texas Paintbrush, Indian Paintbrush and Scarlet Paintbrush this is a common wildflower in eastern Texas in the Spring and often occurs with bluebonnets and fields of assorted wildflowers. It usually has several unbranched stems that form clumps topped by bright-red, paintbrush-like spikes. The flowers are actually inconspicuous and greenish, but are subtended by showy, red-tipped bracts. They sometimes produce a light yellow or pure white variation mixed in with the reds. Together, the flowers and bracts form 3-8 in. spikes.

One unusal thing about the pretty plant is that it is a parasite. The roots of this plant will grow until they touch the roots of other plants, frequently grasses, penetrating these host roots to obtain a portion of their nutrients. The scientific term for such a plants are hemiparasites

Zimbabwe Pavilion hosts Mobile Emergency Room

eyonart.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/zimbabwe-pavilion-hosts-mo...

Thierry Geoffroy, Mobile Emergency Room at the Zimbabwe Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 1st June 2013

The second Zimbabwe Pavilion of the 55th Venice Biennale, commissioned by Doreen Sibanda and curated by Raphael Chikukwa, is hosting Thierry Geoffroy’s Mobile Emergency Room.

An intervention curated by Christine Eyene, as part of “process: immaterial proposal”, the Mobile Emergency Room forms part of the Maldives Pavilion curated by Chamber of Public Secrets. Thierry Geoffroy, a.k.a Colonel, takes on the Maldives as an Emergency case in need of immediate treatment. His work seeks to transform “rigid exhibition spaces” into “elastic and generous exhibition spaces”. As the artist explains: “I will act like a space of generosity, a hunter for climate change Emergency and an art re-distributor”.

Initiated as a conversation begun when Eyene co-curated the 10th Dak’Art Biennal in 2012, this unrealised collaboration was activated at the 55th Venice Biennale in the form of a scenario of “disappearance” whereby actual emergencies and hospitality needs are translated into artistic interventions.

The Mobile Emergency Room consists of the now iconic tent placed in one of the pavilion’s rooms. It extends from being a space for artists expressing emergencies towards climate change, to encompassing emergencies expressed by visual artists from Africa, the Diaspora and beyond. In line with Geoffroy’s process, artists are invited to submit pressing issues as statements, interrogations, images and other creative forms, triggering his central question: can emergencies be ranked?

The outcome of this project will be displayed both online and on site, with regular updates. The space will also be activated by the presence of the curator and artist in the course of the Venice Biennale, with programmed performative conversations and interventions.

The Mobile Emergency Room opens up the Zimbabwe Pavilion from its curatorial theme “Dudziro: Interrogating the Vision of Religious Beliefs” – featuring Virginia Chihota, Rashid Jogee, Michele Mathison, Voti Thebe and Portia Zvavahera – to becoming a hub and space for critical engagement for the art community.

In addition to being a greatly appreciated gesture of generosity and hospitality from the Zimbabwean organisers and artists alike, this international collaboration speaks volumes on the openness of the pavilion’s organisers to artistic and curatorial experiment. It also stands as a unique venture in the history of African curatorship at the Venice Biennial.

Artists with Emergency topics for the Mobile Emergency Room, at the Zimbabwe Pavilion, can contact: eyonartmail@gmail.com.

The Zimbabwe Pavilion is organised by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture. Partners are Culture Fund, the Swiss Embassy in Zimbabwe and the European Union with sponsorship from the Goethe Institute, the Zimbabwe German Society and Portnet.

“process: immaterial proposal” at the 55th Venice Biennale is facilitated by a Curators Grant from the Foundation for Arts Initiatives.

1st MSC hosts mobilization readiness exercise

Camp Santiago, Salinas: Soldiers of the 1st Mission Support Command's Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment hosted a mobilization readiness exercise at Camp Santiago, P.R., 14-27 March.

During the event, HHD Soldiers completed readiness checks for over 1,000 Soldiers. Events such as this are commonly held annually to ensure that commanders can maintain their unit readiness.

"We try to do this as the units get closer to their available year in order to have them improve their overall readiness and mobilization posture in the event they get selected (for mobilization) down the road", said Gerardo Rodriguez, mobilization officer for the 1st MSC.

Rodriguez said MRXs help units maintain readiness for deployments but they also serve the individual Soldier.

"As part of the MRX ... there are different stations and one of them, one of the most important, is medical. A Soldier is completely checked and whatever cannot be fixed at this location ... the Soldier can go to a private (medical) provider and get that situation fixed and that helps them with their overall readiness",he said.

Soldiers rotate through eleven different stations in total where they are checked in by HHD Soldiers and efficiently move through the station. While the process has been refined over the years at times people still tend to get impatient.

Staff Sgt. Anaselly Ramos, logistics noncommissioned officer with the mobilization team, know the experience can be stressful but to help keep the level of frustration down she leads groups of Soldiers through stations when she sees openings. While each group of Soldiers is instructed to follow the schedule given to them for the MRX, Ramos' method keeps things moving along too.

Keeping track of the entire flow of Soldier traffic is a system called the mobilization plan data viewer.

"It shows all the stations and actually it runs the SRP (MRX) completely", said Spc. Hector Rodriguez, from Bayamon.

"It's tracking each Soldier by station ... you can see how many have completed (the stations) and how many have not",added Rodriguez, who is assigned to the 311th Quartermaster Company.

While the process can be tedious for the Soldiers going from station to station, one Soldier working at the medical readiness station found the MRX to be an opportunity to challenge herself by practicing her public speaking skills.

Spc. Jenniffer Gonzalez Diaz, a traffic management coordinator, who's primary language is Spanish, began giving the medical station briefings to many groups of Soldiers. Gonzalez admits that speaking English is not one of her strengths but her determination brought her recognition among her peers and even the Commanding General of the 1st MSC Brig. Gen. Fernando Fernandez.

"They gave me the opportunity to participate in this activity so I can ... help them in the system with the Soldiers, and I practiced a lot my English",said Gonzalez.

As a member of the the 390th Seaport Company, in Ceiba, Gonzalez recognizes the importance of refining her English language skills. When given the opportunity to refine her abilities when she signed up for the Army, Gonzalez participated in English language courses.

"I improved my English, I practiced my English when I took the class but I knew a little bit of the language because we are Puerto Rico and we are bilingual so we took classes when we started in (grade) school", said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez knows this isn't the only challenge she'll have to overcome in her military career, which is why she stays motivated and maintains a positive attitude.

"The important thing for me is to show people that you are trying, don't get upset, don't get mad if someone corrects you because they are helping you",she said. "If you don't know, ask, so you can learn ... the stuff you learn nobody can take away."
