On September 14th, 2012 we hosted the first VC4Africa meetup to take place in Dar es Salaam.
Nadine Kapya, a VC4Africa member for 2 years, stepped forward to host a meetup, the first to be hosted in the country. She is working to bring members together in the area and to grow the VC4Africa community in the country.
Second to networking online, VC4Africa makes use of the Barcamp model (an international network of user generated conferences - open, participatory workshop/events, whose content is provided by participants) to organize our very own series of VC4Africa Meetups.
We like this open format because it means that anyone can participate. Any member of VC4Africa can organize a meeting in their area whenever they feel there is a need.
As with all VC4Africa Meetups, they are simply a place for members to meet one another and share thoughts and ideas. No speeches, no agenda, nothing planned.

During the unveiling, one of the artists was on-hand to paint one of the reindeer statues, while executives from Westfield and artists talked about the cause, their inspiration and their designs. etc.
Participating artists include: Aaron Axelrod, CoutoBrothers, Yolanda González, Man One, Greg Miller, Max Neutra, MarilindaRivera, Analia Saban, Johnny Taylor, Robert Vargas (one statue was designed by students from Inner-City Arts).

Nothofagus pumilio (lenga beech in Mapuche language) is a deciduous tree or shrub in the Nothofagaceae family that is native to the southern Andes range, in the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego, from 35° to 56° South latitude. This tree is in the same genus as the coihue. It regenerates easily after fires. The wood is of good quality, moderate durability, and is easy to work with. It is used in furniture, shingles and construction and sometimes as a substitute for American black cherry in the manufacturing of cabinets.
The lenga beech can be found in the Torres del Paine National Park, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Los Alerces National Park and Nahuel Huapi National Park among other places. In its southerly range it occurs in dense stands as far south as Navarino Island. It grows in areas with low temperatures and abundant snow; therefore, in the north half of its distribution it is found only in the Andes Range and at sea level on its southernmost natural environment. It tolerates temperatures −30 °C (−22 °F) and lower, and frosts all seasons of the year.

Kerala orders probe into religious conversion

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 21 (IANS) A report about 35 people getting converted to Hinduism Sunday would be probed by a senior police official, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said.
The conversion reportedly took place Sunday morning in Alappuzha and Kollam districts.
In Alappuzha, members of eight Christian families - a total of 30 people - reportedly embraced Hinduism at a temple function organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
In Kollam, there were five people who reportedly became Hindus.
Additional Director General of Police A. Hemachandran has been asked to probe the matter and submit a report, Chennithala told reporters here Sunday.
"He will look into whether any law was violated," he said.
The VHP, meanwhile, said all those who became Hindus Sunday decided to convert on their own, and all the organisation did was to prepare the stage for it.
Reports said another 300 people in Alappuzha have expressed their desire to embrace Hinduism, and the conversion ceremony was likely to take place on Christmas day.
Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah, who was in the state Saturday, said his party was against forced religious conversion.
Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, who is currently in Delhi to take part in the politburo meeting, alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was behind Sunday's conversions.
In Kerala, Hindus comprise more than 50 percent of the 32 million population, followed by Muslims with 24 percent while Christians occupy the third place with 22 percent.

It laid eggs all over the tree; up, down, within and without.
All the while, I waited for it to get in a good distance for a shot. I followed slowly when it moves on, or stay still and try to blend into the environment. I imagined it would mistake me for citrus and then...
I lost it several times though, only to discover it moments later still on its business on the tree.

The all new “true crime” case of Fargo’s new chapter travels back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota. “Lou Solverson” (Patrick Wilson), a young State Trooper recently back from Vietnam, investigates a case involving a local crime gang, a major Mob syndicate and a small town beautician “Peggy Blumquist” (Kirsten Dunst) and her husband “Ed” (Jesse Plemons), the local butcher’s assistant. The new face of corporate crime, Joe’s bringing a Walmart mentality to small town America. His number two is “Mike Milligan” (Bokeem Woodbine). Part enforcer, part detective, Mike is always smiling – but the joke is usually on you. Bulo and his crew have their sights set on the Gerhardt crime family in Fargo, currently led by matriarch “Floyd Gerhardt” (Jean Smart). With her husband at death’s door, Floyd takes over the family business, frustrating her eldest son, “Dodd Gerhardt” (Jeffrey Donovan). An impatient hothead with a cruel streak to match his ambitions, Dodd can’t wait for both his parents to die so he can take over and expand their business from kingdom to empire. “Bear Gerhardt” (Angus Sampson) is the middle son, an intimidatingly large man who, although inarticulate, is the most decent of his clan. “Rye Gerhardt” (Kieran Culkin), the youngest of the Gerhardt family, views himself as a big shot, but in reality he’s just a small dog who barks big.

This is a photograph is from a set of photographs from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2017, also known as the Tullynally Challenge, which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 16th August 2017 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. The weather was reasonably good for road racing. The participants had a very stiff breeze in their faces on the outward stretch and all the way to the 2KM mark within Tullynally. This then became a helpful tailwail for the final KM of the race.
Starting off many years ago the race was very much a local affair drawing runners from the sounding areas of Mullingar, North East Meath, Cavan, and Longford. However, the race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands and sees participants from all over Ireland. The race offers prizes in all categories. The Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games. As summer moves into autumn the Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the unofficial ending of summer evening road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer evenings comes less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh. One of the show pieces of the race landscape is Tullynally Castle which provides almost 2.5KM of the race route. The name Tullynally is an adaption of 'Tulaigh an Eallaigh' – the Hill of the Swan. The hill overlooks the mythical Lough Derravaragh. Irish folklore legend names the lake as where the Children of Lir, who were turned into swans, were destined to live for 300 years. Tullynally Castle is still a family home to this day.
One of the enduring symbols of the Castlepollard 5KM is the tireless work of Andy MacEoin of North Westmeath AC who has been a visitor to almost every road race in the Midlands and beyond over the past number of months to publicize the event. Many of the participants tonight will have seen Andy's strategically placed advertising signs around other road race routes. Certainly this work, and that of many other members of North Westmeath AC, has paid off well.
The race begins near the center of the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. The gardens, like the castle are on a grand scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb before the race rejoins it's outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 1100M from the gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish passing the GAA grounds with finish line just outside the local Fire Station.
This year almost 400 took part in the race. It goes without saying that the Castlepollard 5KM has become one of the "must do" road race events in the midlands. Everything that is good about club road racing in Ireland can be found here.

The explaination is very simple.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. Brunssum, Netherlands – Today, the 50th Anniversary of a NATO Headquarters hosted by the town of Brunssum was celebrated. Both military and civilian personnel of Allied Headquarters Joint Force Command Brunssum, joined by veterans from the local area, donned their best uniforms and attire to participate in a military parade conducted in the town centre. To underline the gravity of the occasion and the strong bond of friendship that exists between JFC Brunssum, the town, the province of Limburg and the host nation, the following VVIPs were in attendance:
His Royal Highness King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands;
Ms Rose Gottemoeller (NATO Deputy Secretary General (DSG));
Mrs Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert (Netherlands Minister of Defence (NLD MoD));
General Curtis M. Scaparrotti (Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR));
Mr Theo Bovens (King’s Commissioner and Governor of Limburg).
The parade and reception were jointly hosted by the Commander JFC Brunssum, General Salvatore Farina, and the Mayor of Brunssum, Mr Luc Winants. Following an inspection of the parade by General Scaparrotti the Mayor, three winners of a young persons’ regional debating contest, the Dutch Minister of Defence, the NATO Deputy Secretary General, SACEUR and Commander JFC Brunssum each delivered short speeches to those on parade and the on-looking public. The parade concluded with a fly-past of Belgian F-16s.
Shortly thereafter the Mayor, Governor, DSG, Chairman NATO Military Committee (General Petr Pavel), SACEUR and General Farina jointly unveiled a bronze artwork by the renowned Dutch artist, Harald Vlugt, surrounding a waterfall that connects the town square (the Lindeplein) to a lake in the adjacent Vijverpark. Twenty-eight trout have been painstakingly etched into the bronze representing the twenty-eight members of NATO who, just like the trout, often swim against the current to achieve their goal.
Historical Record: The original predecessor of the headquarters now called Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum was established in 1953 at the Palace of Fontainebleau, France; it’s title was Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT). In 1966 President de Gaulle announced his government’s intention to withdraw from the military structure of NATO and that Allied headquarters based on French soil were to leave the country within one year. Thus, NATO Headquarters moved from Paris to Brussels (Belgium); SHAPE (now called Allied Command Operations) moved from Paris to Mons (Belgium); and AFCENT moved from Fontainebleau to Brunssum (Netherlands). On 01 June 1967 the official inauguration ceremony of AFCENT at Brunssum was conducted in the presence of the Dutch Minister of Defence, the Governor of Limburg, SACEUR and many other distinguished guests. Since then France has re-joined the military structure of NATO whilst the relationship between the NATO headquarters based at Brunssum and its host town continues to grow ever stronger.
