from the class that brought you "let's read gogol & draw ourselves as skulls..."
a pushkin inspired reworking of the prodigal son. that is, we read a story with some altered prodigal son art/plot going on and then got to do the same.
i used: Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's The Departure of the Prodigal Son >> yonder and reworked it to a narrative of the square son leaving his cross-dressed parents for a colourless world. the only middle ground betwixt gouache circus-ry and grey pencil plains...is the horse's ass. ha. i'm particularly proud of the 'father' being a fragile imp with a ribbon'd on pere noel beard, and the sobbing 'mother' being a bearded lady, that is in fact. not a lady. uh, the "good son" is merely a silhouette, cos' he's a boring paper cutout anyway. and the demon in the back is either the prodigal son's role in the show or what he's running away from. maybe he does have reasons...
