This delightful outdoor museum was the next stop on our road trip to Telemark and back to Sandnes.. The vest-telemark museum is adjacent to Eidsborg Stave Church. In a beautiful forest setting, the old traditional buildings are a fascinating insight to the architecture that is uniquely Norwegian.

The Fort of Fenestrelle, nestled in the Piedmontese Alps, is one of the largest and most complex mountain fortresses in Europe. Construction began in 1728 by the Kingdom of Sardinia (House of Savoy) to defend against French incursions. Stretching over 3 kilometers up the mountainside, its vast system of walls, bastions, and stairways reflects centuries of military engineering. Known as the 'Great Wall of the West,' it played a strategic role in regional defense until the 20th century.

One cannot help but be awestruck when you see what was done by those 19th Century people to honor their departed loved ones.
Captured in early 1996, this haunting photograph reveals the war-ravaged interior of Zetra Olympic Hall (now Juan Antonio Samaranch Olympic Hall) in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Prominently displayed in the frame is the iconic Sarajevo '84 Winter Olympics logo, a painful reminder of the city’s former glory, now surrounded by a twisted mass of steel beams, shattered infrastructure, and ghostly quiet.
Originally constructed for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games, Zetra was once a beacon of international camaraderie and athletic excellence. It hosted figure skating and ice hockey events and was heralded for its modern design and alpine-inspired roofline. But a little more than a decade later, during the Siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War (1992–1995), the facility suffered extensive shelling and fire damage. By the time this image was taken, the arena stood gutted and roofless—its skeletal frame and charred ceiling offering silent testimony to the brutal transformation from Olympic splendor to battlefield ruin.
The contrast between the remaining Olympic emblem and the visible structural decay underscores the tragic irony of Sarajevo’s recent past. Once a stage for peaceful competition under the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” the city instead became a theater of one of the longest sieges in modern history. The red-and-white truss structure to the right suggests emergency reinforcement or reconstruction work, but much of the hall at this time remained unsafe and unusable.
International efforts—led by the International Olympic Committee and donor countries—eventually helped rebuild Zetra Hall. It reopened in 1999, symbolizing a rebirth for the city and a reclaiming of hope. But in this particular moment, frozen in early postwar time, the arena is a liminal space caught between two identities: a relic of Olympic aspiration and a ruin of civil devastation.
For those familiar with Sarajevo, Zetra was more than just a sports arena—it was a cultural hub, a memory box of youthful dreams, a landmark visible from Trebević and across the Miljacka Valley. This photograph is more than architectural—it is emotional, historical, and unflinching. The image preserves not just what was physically left behind but also what was emotionally lost, all beneath the fading sign of Sarajevo '84.

Tauric Chersonesos is the name of the city founded by Greek colonists in southwestern Crimea more than 2500 years ago. Its archaeological ruins are presently one of the attractions of the city of Sevastopol, Russia.
In ancient Greek the word chersonesos means "peninsula." The city was indeed located on a small peninsula between two bays. "Tauric" Chersonesos further denotes the location of the colony, that is, "in the lands of the Taurians". This a warring tribe that inhabited the neighboring mountains. The city was destined to exist for nearly two thousand years, and its history is intertwined with that of ancient Greece, Rome, and Byzantium.
In 1827, 50 years after the foundation of Sevastopol, the first excavations at the site of Chersonesos commenced. Soon afterwards, Chersonesos received the epithet of "Russian Troy."
