In the meantime Portencross Castle, also known historically as Portincross Castle, is situated in Portencross, on the west coast of Scotland, about 3 km from West Kilbride, Ayrshire. The site has been fortified since the 11th Century. The present tower castle is thought to date from the mid-14th Century and later, and currently hosts an all volunteer visitor centre.
The Glenfinnan Monument was erected in 1815 to commemorate the lives of those men who fought for the Jacobean cause in the 1745 rebellion.
Although often thought of as a Scotland vs England battle it was more religious in nature with the Jacobite’s wanting to install a catholic monarch, in the form of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, on the throne.
This location was chosen as it was near here that around 1,200 Highlanders gathered to pledge their allegiance to the Prince, also known as “Bonny Prince Charlie”. The actual gathering point is now known to be around 1km further down the loch on the right as you look at this photograph.
Tower House and Avenham Tower are a block of three houses dating back to the 1850s that have been converted into flats. These houses were originally designed to resemble a single mansion and have wonderful views over Avenham Park.

Puente la Reina is a town and municipality in Navarre, located in the Valdizarbe valley. It is famous for its Romanesque bridge, built by Queen Muniadona in the 11th century to facilitate the passage of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. The bridge has six arches and crosses the river Arga. Puente la Reina is a meeting point on the Camino de Santiago from Roncesvalles and Somport.
The James T. Saban Lookout stands on a ridge of Precambrian granitic gneiss east of Ten Sleep, Wyoming in the Bighorn National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1942, it served as a fire lookout until 1972 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Originally called High Park Lookout, it was renamed in 2015 to honor James Tory Saban, a forester who died in the 1937 Blackwater Fire near Cody.
Historic Hilton barn undergoing restoration for a new park. The barn contained no interior lighting, and so required an ISO of 1600 with a Nikon D7200. The resulting photo still contained a good deal of noise, managed by Topaz DeNoise AI.
Found on Cape Cornwall in the English county of Cornwall the remains of St. Helen's Oratory, which is thought to possibly date back as far as Roman times, is a tiny early Christian chapel located in a field at Cape Cornwall.
Longstone Lighthouse is an active 19th century lighthouse on Longstone Rock in the outer group of the Farne Islands off the Northumberland Coast, England. Completed in 1826, it was originally called the Outer Farne Lighthouse,[ and complemented the earlier Inner Farne Lighthouse. The lighthouse is best known for the 1838 wreck of the Forfarshire and the role of Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper's daughter, in rescuing survivors.
The remains of a once well used and loved pier at the southern edge of Loch Lomond stands as a reminder of the popularity of the cruise business which once flourished here.Trains from Glasgow used to terminate just a 100 meters or so away carrying hundreds of day trippers to this scenic location.
Fall is here at the Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut.
The house was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter, an architect from New York City. When it was being built, the Hartford Daily Times noted, "The novelty displayed in the architecture of the building, the oddity of its internal arrangement and the fame of its owner will all conspire to make it a house of note for a long time to come."

When Polish immigrants came to America back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, they found comfort and community in their churches. Sweetest Heart of Mary Church was a cornerstone of the Polish community in Detroit. It remains a source of pride and a beacon of faith for Polish Americans in the metro Detroit area to this day. The Church project began in 1890 and was completed in 1893. My in-laws were married there in 1941

Some of the remains of the old tin mining works at Botallack in Cornwall England. Tin mining was once the most productive in the world and broght huge prosperity to a few fortunate mine owners.
The newly renovated TWA Hotel: The TWA terminal, now still Terminal 5 at JFK, is Eero Saarinen's most well known works, one of the best examples of mid-century modern architecture.

Built in 1836, this 90-foot-high granite column was a tribute from the people of Camborne, Cornwall to Francis Basset, a philanthropist and member of the most important mining family in the area.
Basset was well known for looking after his workers, and did much to improve their lives. He was made Baron de Dunstanville in 1779 after marching his miners from Camborne to Plymouth to shore up the city’s defences against the invading French and Spanish fleets.
Originally housing the reading room of the Library and the primary study location for students, the building was extended along McTavish St. in the 1920s. This was the second freestanding library building in Canada and McGill's first purpose-built library. The original Hall was repurposed in 1952 to serve as an auditorium for music recitals and receptions. It houses a rare replica of a French Renaissance organ.
At the Palácio da Pena in Sintra, even a doorway feels like a painting. This deep red corridor curves upward toward the castle’s heart, its arched doorway framed by stone carvings that shimmer softly in the Atlantic light. The surface of the wall is worn and alive—its color glowing richer against the cobblestone path that leads visitors deeper into one of Portugal’s most dreamlike landmarks.
Behind this crimson façade, the palace unfolds in a kaleidoscope of color and texture—lavender tiles, yellow domes, Moorish arches, and Gothic spires. Every turn feels theatrical, as if the building itself is performing under the ever-shifting sky. Designed in the 19th century as a Romantic retreat for King Ferdinand II, Pena Palace is less a fortress than a daydream rendered in stone—a meeting of imagination and empire at the edge of the forest.
The red wall’s bold simplicity contrasts beautifully with the ornate tilework beside it, a reminder that beauty at Pena lies as much in its playful juxtapositions as in its grandeur.

Tenganan Village is a village in the regency of Karangasem in East Bali, Indonesia. The Village had gates on all four points of the compass which were guarded. The Village is known for the gringsing or geringsing, double ikat textiles woven in only 3 places in the world; and for its gamelan selunding or Gambelan selonding music played on iron metallophones. It is a working village where people live and the villagers still work on their craft as they have done for generations
Before the 1970s it was known by anthropologists as a secluded society in the archipelago. Rapid changes have occurred in the village since the 1970s, such as the development of local communications by the central government, the opening up to tourism, and the breaking of the endogamic rules.[1]
Tourists are attracted to Tenganan by its unique Bali Aga culture that still holds to the original traditions, ceremonies, and rules of ancient Balinese, and its unique village layout and architecture.

I didn't see the sign until we had made a full circle of the building and met the owner who was curious about our intentions. She was pleased that our only interest in trespassing was to take photo's and record the progress of decay. She told us a bit of history and recommended we go to Deckerville historic society to learn more. a pleasant exchange

Dumbarton Castle, known locally as "the rock" sits high on an ancient volcanic plug at the confluence of the rivers Leven and Clyde.
The River Leven is the sole outlet of Scotlands largest water body Loch Lomond (Loch Lomond is Scotlands largest loch (lake) in terms of surface area however Loch Ness is the largest in terms of water volume) while the Clyde is the gateway to Scotlands second city Glasgow, famous for it's shipbuilding history during the early 20th century.
The Castle itself has been here in various forms since at least the 5th century as it was recorded by the Romans at that time and is attributed as having the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland.
