The Strawberry Mansion Bridge is a steel arch truss bridge across the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States.

It was built in 1896–1897 by the Phoenix Iron Company, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania under private ownership by the Fairmount Park Transportation Company, which operated trolleys over the bridge with pedestrian and carriage lanes on the north side. Trolley service was discontinued in 1946.

The Philadelphia Historical Commission designated the bridge as a historic structure on September 7, 1978.

The bridge is significant for its construction under private ownership by the Fairmount Park Transportation Company, a streetcar line operating in the park. Nationally recognized bridge engineer Theodore Cooper consulted on the design of this spandrel-braced, three-hinged steel arch structure, which set records within its type for overall length and speed of erection. It is also a major work of the Phoenix Bridge Company, a prolific fabricating and erecting firm.

AMEN CORNER: Moss Hill Methodist Church - somewhere near Vernon, Florida. The church started as the first Methodist Mission between Pensacola and the Apalachicola River in 1821. This building was constructed of heart pine in 1857 and is still in use today. Old growth oaks draped with Spanish moss fill the area. As with many country churches, there is a cemetery to the rear and side. Services are the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 2:00 pm. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and has a page on Wikipedia

Masonic Temple Building, Fairbanks Alaska. Original structure was built in 1906, with later modifications. Listed on the National Register of Historical Places in the 1980s.

The rear of the building collapsed under the weight of heavy snow loads accumulated over the course of this winter. For safety concerns the entire building was quickly leveled. I didn't see the demolition, but glad I was able to take a few pictures, especially of the front facade before it was destroyed, not knowing it would be taken down so quickly without an effort to preserve some of it.

.The Newton Falls covered bridge was built over the east branch of the Mahoning River around 1831. A crosswalk was added in 1921 for children crossing the bridge on their way to the school on Center Street. The Newton Falls bridge is considered the second oldest existing covered bridge in Ohio, the oldest covered bridge in use on its original site, the only covered bridge in the state with a covered crosswalk, and the last surviving covered bridge in Trumbull County. Built on the Town Lattice truss plan, the bridge is 123 feet long and twenty-four feet wide. It has a clear span of 101 1/2 feet and a sixteen foot-wide roadway. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the structure is maintained by Trumbull County.

Rising quietly along Eddy Street in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, the Joan San-Jule Apartments are a fading but still-striking example of Victorian Italianate architecture—a style that once dominated the city’s streetscape before the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire. This image captures a dramatic upward angle of the building’s ornate façade, highlighting its detailed cornices, fluted pilasters, and recessed windows with scrollwork brackets—all hallmarks of a bygone era in San Francisco housing.

Though partially boarded and weathered with time, the structure remains deeply expressive. Painted a soft cream color, its wood siding and classical ornamentation stand in stark contrast to the more austere and modern buildings surrounding it. The shadows cast by projecting bays, dentil molding beneath the cornice line, and egg-and-dart details suggest a care in craftsmanship not often seen in contemporary urban development.

The small sign identifying the building as the “Joan San-Jule Apartments” suggests a late-20th-century renaming—perhaps by a landlord, a preservationist, or someone commemorating a family name. Its placement in the center of the narrow façade draws the viewer’s eye up into the symmetrical verticality of the building, where light dances on glass and texture.

San Francisco’s Tenderloin is one of the most architecturally overlooked neighborhoods in the city. While often associated with social services and dense housing, it also hosts a remarkable number of surviving Victorian and Edwardian-era buildings, especially on the quieter blocks just a few steps from Van Ness Avenue. The Joan San-Jule Apartments stand as a rare survivor—a structure that likely dates to the late 1800s and speaks to the city’s past in wood, glass, and paint.

Captured in a sharply vertical composition, this photograph emphasizes the contrast between preservation and decay. Wavy windowpanes, bird netting stretched across the cornice, and the texture of aging paint all reinforce the passage of time. The boarded windows, while unfortunate, add a documentary truth to the image: many such buildings teeter between renovation and ruin.

Yet even in this in-between state, the Joan San-Jule Apartments tell a rich story. They remind viewers that not all history is enshrined in museums—some of it lingers quietly in residential architecture, holding onto its dignity despite the chaos and change that surround it. For urban explorers, architecture enthusiasts, or San Franciscans eager to look past the surface, this building is a modest masterpiece waiting to be noticed.

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s bustling financial district stands 351 California Street, an emblematic structure that whispers tales of the city’s storied past amidst its ever-evolving skyline. This historic gem, constructed in 1928, boasts a façade that harkens back to an era when craftsmanship and attention to detail were paramount. The building’s Renaissance Revival style is characterized by its intricate terracotta ornamentation and grandiose presence, offering a stark contrast to the sleek modernity of its towering neighbors.

As you approach 351 California Street, you’re greeted by a sense of nostalgia; it’s as if time has stood still for this architectural marvel. The lower levels feature ornate detailing that invites passersby to ponder about the skilled artisans who shaped each piece by hand. With its rich history interwoven into San Francisco’s cultural tapestry, this landmark serves not only as office space but also as a testament to architectural ingenuity from a bygone era.

For those with an appreciation for heritage buildings, 351 California Street is more than just an address—it’s a narrative etched in stone and mortar. It represents resilience, standing proudly against seismic shifts both literal and metaphorical. As part of San Francisco’s historical fabric, this building continues to captivate architects, historians, and tourists alike.

The look of the old west ................

Captain Smith's Cabin was built by Henry Smith by using those two stone slabs as one wall of the cabin. Inside he carved himself an alcove for his bed and a slot for his guns (we know what was important to him!). Below you can see some additional shots of the site (as soon as I add them...). Once again the fence is to keep cattle out, and the "gateway" and walkway are very narrow, enough for one person at a time.

"Smiths Cabin is the old home of Captain Henry Smith who came to Escalante Canyon after serving in the Civil War. He was a tombstone carver by trade. The Smith Cabin site actually consists of two cabins. The first cabin was Smiths main home and was built by erecting three walls against a large slab of Sandstone. Inside this cabin Smith carved out a niche in the sandstone rock for a bed and next to his bed he carved a slot to hold his guns." 11 East Forsyth, formerly known as the Lynch Building and the American Heritage 11 East Forsyth, Jacksonville, Florida, USA / Architects: Pringle & Smith / Completed: 1926 / Floors: 17 / Height: 200 ft / Architectural Style: Neo-Classicism/ Added: NRHP: December 23, 2003Life Building, is a historic structure in Jacksonville, Florida. Originally developed by Stephen Andrew Lynch, as its current name suggests, it is located at 11 East Forsyth Street in Downtown Jacksonville. On December 23, 2003, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Vestcor invested more than $24 million to restore the building's exterior and transform the former offices into loft apartments, which tenants began to occupy during 2003.

The 17-story, 153,000 sq ft (14,200 m2) building originally contained commercial offices and was opened by entrepreneur and film pioneer Stephen Andrew Lynch. It was designed by architects Pringle & Smith in 1926 in the Chicago School style. It was constructed with limestone, marble and a facade of brick; the top of the structure contained a capital of terra-cotta. When it opened in 1926, it was Jacksonville's second tallest building, one floor less than the Barnett National Bank Building.

The building was renovated in 1962 and renamed the American Heritage Life Building when it was utilized as home office of the American Heritage Life Insurance Company. When the company built a new headquarters and left the downtown during the late 1980s, the structure was unoccupied for many years.

Jacksonville developer Vestcor began a historic preservation of the building in 2002 after obtaining a $17.8 million, 1.5% interest, 20-year loan from the city of Jacksonville. The company restored many architectural features including polychromatic terra-cotta panels, decorative ceilings and steel panels. Elevators, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and other infrastructure was modernized and a six-story parking garage was constructed adjacent to the building. The second floor was converted into a large community club room, a fitness center and a media room. Modern amenities were added while respecting the historic integrity of the structure. The building was renamed to "11 East Forsyth" and 127 apartments were opened in 2003 after $24 million and a year of construction. A Starbucks coffee bistro opened, but subsequently closed, leaving no tenants in the 4,500 sq ft (420 m2) of first-floor commercial space.

In late December 2009, Vestcor requested a modification to their loan terms, citing three years of operating losses at 11 East and their other renovated building, The Carling. The company asked for three years of interest-only payments plus low interest loans to potential tenants for the empty commercial space at 11 East. Three months later, the city approved the plan for principal deferral but took no action on tenant loans.

Blaine, Washington

Semiahmoo Spit is a spit that protrudes from the westernmost expanse of shore along Drayton Harbor in the city of Blaine, WA located in Whatcom County, WA.

Tongue Point is the northern tip of Semiahmoo Spit - at least that's the easiest way for me to distinguish the two somewhat overlapping place names. This was the site of a large cannery, and a small town, for much of the earlier part of the last century and many of the old buildings and wharves remain.

The historic structures have divided this shoreline into three separate sections of beach, each with a different texture and composition. The western segment, under the old piers, is gravelly sand that made it past the bar (see the previous post). The central segment is all sand. The eastern crescent beach is sand and gravel with lots of broken shells.

History:

In 1858, prospectors came to the Semiahmoo area searching for the Fraser River. The spit seemed like a logical place to set up a post as a launching point for further exploration into the mainland.

A trading post was soon established at the spit, and the owner drew up plans for Semiahmoo City. Semiahmoo was expected to become a migration boomtown, but it eventually developed into a fishing town, as the spit provided shelter for Drayton Harbor and an abundance of coastal resources.

Whatcom County's first salmon cannery opened in 1881 in Semiahmoo; in 1891, the Alaska Packers Association was the largest salmon cannery in the world. Salmon canning was to be the main source of revenue in Semiahmoo until 1980, when the land was purchased by the land development corporation. Recently, a park with a small, seasonal interpretive center was built near the headland, and the Semiahmoo Resort and Golf Course was built near the spit.

First Canneries:

Whatcom County’s first cannery was opened in August of 1882 by James Tarte and John Martin in Semiahmoo. In 1891, Daniel Drysdale built a small cannery at the end of Semiahmoo Spit that packed 7,369 cases of sockeye and 1,457 cases of Coho salmon in its first year. However, the ever-increasing number of canners made the 1890s a period of intense competition, and as a result, canneries began merging to better handle increased competition.

Opatija is a town and a municipality in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in western Croatia. The traditional seaside resort on the Kvarner Gulf is known for its Mediterranean climate and its historic buildings reminiscent of the Austrian Riviera.

Opatija was included in the territory of the Liburni, a pre-Roman Illyrian tribe. In Roman times, the area was home to several patrician villas connected to the nearby town of Castrum Laureana, the modern Lovran.

Croats settled in the region from about 700 AD onwards. Conquered by King Pepin of Italy, son of Charlemagne, in 789, the Istrian peninsula up to the Kvarner Gulf was incorporated into the Carolingian March of Friuli by 803. In the east, it bordered on the medieval Kingdom of Croatia established by King Tomislav about 925. Having invaded Italy, King Otto of Germany made the Istrian lands part of the vast March of Verona and Aquileia; from the 11th century onwards, the Imperial estates were held by the Patriarchs of Aquileia.

The town's modern history began in 1844, when Iginio Scarpa (1794–1866), a wealthy merchant from Rijeka, had the Villa Angiolina manor built in an extended park, where he received notable guests, such as Ban Josip Jelačić. In 1873 the Austrian Southern Railway company from Vienna opened the branch line from Pivka to Rijeka via nearby Matulji and thus opened the path for the development of tourism in Opatija and neighbouring Lovran. In 1882, the railway company purchased the Villa Angiolina, where it accommodated the crown princely couple Rudolf and Stéphanie. At the time, Friedrich Julius Schüler (1832–1894), the Managing Director of the Southern Railways, started the construction of the Hotel Quarnero (Kvarner Hotel) and the Hotel Kronprinzessin Stephanie (present-day Hotel Imperial), and also was responsible for the unique lungomare and parks (the Company engaged Carl Schubert, director of the Viennese Emperial-Royal Society for the construction of parks). The Villa Angiolina was later run by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. In the Angiolina Park today stands Schüler's bust, a work of the sculptor Hans Rathausky.

In 1908 a tramway line was opened, running from Matulji station along the coast via Opatija down to Lovran in the south. Opatija is best known nowadays as the venue for a 1912 chess tournament devoted to the King’s Gambit. The Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I used to spend several months there during the winter. He met there with the German emperor Wilhelm II on 29 March 1894; other crowned heads seeking relaxation included Empress Elisabeth of Austria and the German empress Augusta Victoria, King Carol I of Romania and his consort Elisabeth, King George I of Greece, King Albert of Saxony, Grand Duke William IV of Luxembourg, and Prince Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš. Many of the late 19th-century luxury hotels and villas have survived to present times.

In 1947 Opatija was given to Yugoslavia as part of the peace treaty with Italy; most of the Italian-speaking population emigrated to Italy. In 1963 the Hotel Adriatic, by the architect Andrija Čičin-Šain and his team was completed. Hotel "Adriatic" was the first hotel built in Opatija after the Austro-Hungarian era. The rooms of hotel "Adriatic" have been described as novelties in the hospitality industry. The "Casino Rosalia" was opened in Opatija – the first casino in Eastern Europe. In 1981 the Hotel "Admiral" and marina (200 berths and 40 dry berths) were completed. After the breakup of Yugoslavia which began in 1991, the town became part of Croatia.

Constructed in the early 1920's, the Gillespie Dam diverted much needed water from the Gila River to irrigate the arid farmland downstream. A section of the dam failed during a flood in 1993. While that missing section was never reconstructed, the majority of Gillespie Dam remains. The 79 alcoves created by it's reinforced concrete multiple dome & buttress design have evolved, 11 alcoves were destroyed in the 1993 flood, into individual and unique ecosystems where plants flourish, birds build nests, and fish find refuge from the harsh sun. Counting from the west end of the dam, this is the 58th Alcove. As the sun moves across the sky each day, it creates a slow moving and ever changing mosaic of shadows, light, and reflections.

Honfleur, France

Eglise Sainte-Catherine was built in the mid-15th century on the site of the previous stone church that was destoyed during the English invasion in 1419 of the 100 Years’ War. It is the largest church built of wood and having a separate bell tower in France. The stone used in the original church was replaced by wood, which was easier to obtain and also to construct by the local shipbuilders. The crèche de Noël is at the front of the church.

11 East Forsyth, formerly known as the Lynch Building and the American Heritage 11 East Forsyth, Jacksonville, Florida, USA / Architects: Pringle & Smith / Completed: 1926 / Floors: 17 / Height: 200 ft / Architectural Style: Neo-Classicism/ Added: NRHP: December 23, 2003Life Building, is a historic structure in Jacksonville, Florida.
