A little back-story....
We have a family of Ground Squirrels that are quite entertaining. Over time I've befriended this little guy somewhat; he lets me get really close, about 10 ft. Long-story short, I've learned that if I talk baby-talk to him and make little chirping noises he seems to trust me. whereas most of the other ground squirrels in the area really keep their distance.
This morning I grabbed my 70-200 and went out looking for him. He was behind the garage scratching in the ground. I watched him burry a nut and then dig it back up and munch on it. you can see the hole he dug just behind the rock. It was a real joy to watch him in his natural environment up close.
Grandpa had no sons, therefore when his daughter married and she took on the name of her husband, Grandpa's name will fade with the memory of him after his life. These are the things he was reflecting on as he watched his precious granddaughter play.

His head's not much bigger than the peanut....saw this little fella dissapear down this hole..then just a matter of dropping a few peanuts and waiting.
He's calling all his wives, and they all came and joined him in the tree. I think he was telling them the bird feeder was close by because they all attacked it.

Thanks to Jeff Summerlin for the identification. An interesting little insect, I'd never heard of, I really thought it was another bee!
It was so lovely to see numerous Monarchs 'floating' through the air and landing so close without concern. They seemed to be attracted to the mass of Lantana scattered everywhere. The Males have the 2 black androconial scales on their hindwings as you can see in these shots.

Ben Harvey accordion and his band Ornamentals are not entertaining very often. You could probably count their yearly performances on one hand. I for one, look forward to hear this band, as accordion is rarely used in jazz. Ben always dresses up and his bandmates have to keep up. Benson Lee on jazz banjo, Great Bob Scott on drums and Gram Whitty -bass upright bass. Gene Harvey played sax, but is not always available as he performs all over the world. Ben and Gene are also very capable singers, so good entertainment is guaranteed.

Peregrine Falcons mainly eat birds, rarely mammals or rodents.
This is the first time I’ve witnessed a Peregrine Falcon eating a gopher.
