This Digital Terrain Model of debris around the base of the Breakwater Fort in Plymouth Sound shows how well this form of visualization can show the seabed, bur how badly it images wrecks, or any fine detail.
This area was adjacent to a test site set up by ADUS as part of the University of St Andrews Rapid Archaeological Site Survey and Evaluation (RASSE) Project.

This area of seabed comprising of metamorphic rock dissected by gullies, contains two important wreck, one of the mid Bronze age and the other mid 17th century.
The BA wreck is characterized by bronze objects and a small gold torque. The later wreck is marked by a scatter of iron cannons and hundreds of north african gold coins, minted in Marrakesh.
Although the Bronze age boat has not survived, the wreck site is marked by irts cargo of over 350 bronze objects, including tools, weapons and jewelry. The finds were all recovered from the gullies in the chalk at a depth of c. 7m. The seabed is deeper to the south east and the solid geology is covered by sediment.

Time lapse surveys allows changes in the seabed to be identified, and quantified. These surveys were around the wreck of the Stirling Castle (in the centre) and indicate large sand waves moving across the area. Two unknown wrecks are revealed in the bottom of the large gully (top left). The area (c. 1200m x 400m )contains a total of more than 13 wrecks and there are probably many more to be found.
