Titsey Place manor house to be exact.. Shot in twilight, tripod used.

The house dates back to the 16th century and Titsey park is one of the largest surviving historic estates in Surrey.

Just to prove it, here's one in colour :-)

This is a Panorama out of 4 x 80MegaPixel Higheres Pen-F Shots.

I did some Postprocessing to eliminate the Blur in the Water and to delete the movement of the people.

If someone is interested in how I did it, drop me a message here in Flickr.

Gave the high resolution mode on the new camera a try last night. Didn't get the composition right (chopped the top off the steeple) or the shutter speed - stars are moving since this is a 8 x 8 second exposure. But it was cold - much colder than it looks - and I'd already taken a couple of shots.

From above, a snowfall turns Canterbury into a pale mosaic of roofs and lanes, and the Cathedral Precincts read as a great cleared island within the tighter grain of the city. The cathedral’s long rooflines and transepts take the snow cleanly, while the great central tower rises as the anchor point, a vertical statement in the middle of the plan. Even in winter, the building’s scale is unmistakable: a church designed to be seen from every approach, and to draw the eye in the same way it has drawn travellers for centuries.

Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important centres of Christianity in England. The story begins in AD 597 when Augustine arrived and established a church here, laying the foundations of what became the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. After the Norman Conquest, a vast new cathedral was begun under Archbishop Lanfranc in the 1070s, setting the basic footprint of the medieval building. Over time, that Norman core was reworked and extended into the richly layered cathedral we recognise today.

Few events shaped its fame more than the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in the cathedral in 1170. Becket’s shrine quickly became one of Europe’s great pilgrimage destinations, and Canterbury entered the wider imagination as a place of journey and devotion, a reputation later echoed in Chaucer’s tales of travellers heading for the shrine. A fire in 1174 led to a major rebuilding of the choir, pushing the architecture forward into a new Gothic language that still defines much of the cathedral’s interior character.

The tower often called Bell Harry is the cathedral’s late-medieval flourish: the central crossing tower completed in the late 15th century, rising above the meeting of nave and transepts and giving Canterbury its distinctive skyline. In this aerial view, winter makes the geometry easier to read: the long nave, the broad transepts, the clustered chapels and courts of the precincts, and the city pressing close around the walls. The scaffolding visible in the scene is a reminder that a building this old is never truly “finished” – it is continually maintained, repaired and handed on, season after season.

Seal watching at Horsey Gap on the Norfolk coast

Each winter, usually from late October through January, grey seal gather in large numbers at Horsey Gap, turning this quiet stretch of the Norfolk coast into one of Britain’s most important seal breeding sites. By January, the beach and dunes are often dotted with young pups and the last of the season’s adult females, while many of the older pups are already beginning to shed their distinctive white coats.

Grey seals are the UK’s largest seal species. Adult males can exceed two metres in length and weigh well over 300 kilograms, while females are smaller but still powerfully built. Their long heads and Roman-nose profile give them a striking appearance, especially when seen hauled out on the sand among marram grass and winter dunes.

January is an interesting transitional moment in the season. Most pups have been born by December, but many are still present, resting in sheltered hollows behind the dunes. Newly born pups begin life with a thick, creamy-white lanugo coat which keeps them warm on land but is not waterproof. Over several weeks they gain weight rapidly on their mother’s rich milk, then moult into a shorter, darker coat. Once this moult is complete, they are ready to enter the sea and learn to swim and feed independently.

The adults are equally fascinating to watch at this time of year. Mothers that have finished nursing return to the sea to recover body condition, while dominant males patrol the edges of the colony earlier in the season, competing for access to breeding females. By January the beach is quieter, but the social structure and physical traces of the breeding season are still evident in the sand and dunes.

Horsey Gap is especially important because it offers a rare combination of wide beaches, relatively stable dunes, and shallow offshore waters. These conditions make it ideal for breeding and for the first tentative swims of young seals. The site is part of a wider network of seal colonies along the east coast of England, but Horsey is notable for how close the seals are to the dunes and viewing areas, offering exceptional opportunities to observe them without disturbance when managed carefully.

What makes a January visit particularly memorable is the contrast: soft winter light, empty beaches, and the quiet presence of wildlife at its most intimate moment. It is not just a spectacle of numbers, but a glimpse into a critical stage of the grey seal’s life cycle, played out against one of Norfolk’s most elemental coastal landscapes.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!

John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.
