The Highest Resolution Image of our Planet
It's been taken by Russia's latest weather satellite, the Electro-L. Elektro-L is now orbiting Earth on a geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometers above the equator. The satellite took the photos at a massive 121 megapixels. Electro-L’s images were made combining three visible light wavelengths and one infrared, according to Gizmodo. I just love to have this opportunity to showcase this picture in my blog.

A resize and crop of a huge, 6000x6000 pixel photo I found of a composite of images from orbit of Earth.
Actual pictures of our Pale Blue Dot, not taken by me (most likely NASA/APOD). Unfortunately, I can't find the source, but the original filename is Earth6k-01.tif, so if anyone knows where to find the 6000x6000 source, let me know!
Cropped and resized to fit on dual 1920x1080 displays. Enjoy!

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) is one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks include exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe. We have digitalized enhanced more than 100 of his fascinating drawings and paintings under the CC0 license in this collection.

This one almost has too much. Beijing's underworld scratched into the city's own filth? This is the East 3rd Ring road. Male prostitute - ring road? I couldn't have set it up better myself, except my calligraphy would have been much nicer.

Remarkable 16th century botanical calligraphic artwork by two masters of the past: Georg Bocskay (1510–1575), court secretary to Ferdinand I, and Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1601). First created by Georg Bocskay to demonstrated the different styles of calligraphy of the era, the book was later ornamented with intricate fruits, flowers, and insects by Joris Hoefnagel and commissioned by Emperor Rudolph II, Ferdinand’s grandson. This unusual artistic collaboration between scribe and painter disrupted the history of manuscript illumination and gave us one of the most fascinating and beautifully crafted manuscripts of all time. Complement your designs, posters, and wallpapers with these enchanting CC0 illustrations from the past. We have digitally enhanced these spellbound hand-drawn calligraphy into high resolution printable quality. They are free to download under the CC0 license.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

The complete series of 38 round watercolor illustrations from The Flower Book (1905) by British artist and designer Sir Edward Burne–Jones (1833–1898). Burne–Jones called his work "a series of illustrations to the Names of Flowers". Illustrations titled with common flower names, but drawn on Arthurian romance, The Bible, classical legend, and oddly not depicting a single flower. We have digitally enhanced this peculiar complete series of The Flower Book. They are in high resolution printable quality and free to download under the CC0 license.

From the museum label: In this and other works made in Paris after he and Fernande Olivier left Gósol in August 1906, Picasso begins to reject the monumental forms he refined earlier that summer. In Nude Combing Her Hair, he models the figure’s flesh with distinct patches of light and dark, making her body appear simultaneously flat, volumetric, curvy, and geometric. The nude in Woman with Comb (here) is even more dramatically modelled and appears to be dissolving into a white ground. This play between flatness and volume is one Picasso also explores in his backless sculpture Kneeling Woman Combing Her Hair, a compact, self-enclosed figure reminiscent of Crouching Beggarwoman.

Floral illustrations from one of the most influential botanical artists, Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770), German botanist and entomologist. He started his career as a gardener's apprentice traveling and working across Europe. Ehret was known for his Linnaean style of botanical illustrations since he closely worked with the "father of modern taxonomy", Carl Linnaeus. Ehret collaborated with Carl Linnaeus and George Clifford on his first botanical collection. We have digitally enhanced some of his botanical plates into high resolution printable quality. This floral collection is free to download and use under the cc0 license.
