Campbell Hill is named for Charles D. Campbell of Bellefontaine, who owned this land from 1896 to 1937. A marble stone marker atop the hill, set in 1900 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, marks it as the highest point in Ohio at an elevation of 1549.09 feet. In 1951, the federal government established the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning (A C & W) Squadron here as part of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD). Its military and civilian operators used sophisticated radar and computer equipment to locate and identify aircraft as friendly or suspicious, and relayed information to a central site in Battle Creek, Michigan. This Cold War site operated until 1969. It was converted to civilian use as a vocational education center in 1974.

Pevsner says 'By the time Highpoint Two was built the architect had learned that for the London climate cement-rendering is not an advisable finish, so he used brick and tile is infillings.' But I thought that, on this pleasant June day, Highpoint I's cement finish worked better. It's certainly the easier block of the two to photograph.

1938, brick and tile infill as opposed to Highpoint I's cement rendering. Once I thought the caryatids were a result of someone compromising the original vision, but they were actually a surreal gesture by Lubetkin himself.

...of the 127 photo shoot day, in the literal sense, was at this remote outpost, where a bus shelter from a bygone age survives. Although this was a Summer day, waiting here on a bleak windswept day must have been quite an experience. The Bus Stop is near to the Staffordshire village of Foxt. The "Foxt Circular" was a service once operated by PMT from Cheadle using short Leopards, such as 127, and Reliances.

Highpoint - the ex-headquarters of the Yorkshire Permanent Building Society on Westgate in Bradford was built in the early 1970s. It is a 9 story building which seems to have practically no windows! Developers did have plans to add a further 4 stories, convert the offices into 93 apartments and completely re-clad the building however the economic downturn in 2008 has ended that idea.

In my opinion this building is the low-point of architecture in Bradford, it would look more at home on a Soviet missile base.

We celebrated Scott's birthday with a lunch at the awesomely named Big Ed's Chicken Pit, which evidently is owned by a woman not named Ed. An online review indicated the place attracted biker-types, just not the scary kind.
