Higger Tor from Carl Wark in the Derbyshire Peak District. Despte the appearance, this is a very accessible area of moorland and ideal for an afternoon's walk. Carl Wark is the site of what is believed to be an iron age fort.
Another shot of Higger Tor below.
Taken about 6.30am on Higger Tor looking west across the Hope Valley towards Castleton and Mam Tor. Stanage Edge to the Right in the distance. Cant wait for that heather to turn colour. It's gonna happen soon.
Out this morning for sunup, and headed to Higger Tor. Wrong choice I reckon as low cloud obscured the sunrise completely.. I think that Curbar would have been good this morning judging by the way the light was in the distance, and seemed to be hitting the ground right over the Curbar area!
This was taken about an hour after sunrise, and I loved the strip of light over Castleton, but lighting Mam Tor and the Great Ridge

Taken with an Olympus μ (mju) zoom wide 80 camera on Agfaphoto Vista 200 film.
This was taken a little later in the morning, with the light being a touch harsh. I'll be back to get this one in the snow hopefully.

A lovely sunrise this morning at Higger Tor. My first of 2014. The light from the sun was a little weak as it rose into a thin layer of cloud.
I had a full day's holiday planned but I'm having to work some of it. It's a pity, because, with the weather report being promising, I'd probably have been up Kinder Scout. Never mind. Higger Tor is a wonderful location and never the same twice.
A wonderful walk over Hathersage Moor to Higger Tor on Wednesday. In the distance is Higger Tor rising from the surrounding moorland photographed from the rocky edge of the Carl Walk Iron Age Hill Fort.
The moorland was looking particularly beautiful, a blanket of lush bracken and flowering heather rising abruptly to the rocky outcrops of Higger Tor.
Colourful dawn skies from the gritstone boulders of Higger Tor. A layer of mist hangs over Burbage Brook and partially enshrouds Carl Wark (Iron Age Hill Fort) to the right side. Hathersage Moor, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, England, UK. October. Autumn.
This one of Higger Tor is too exposures merged in post processing, thanks to the D7100's nifty auto-bracketing! (something which the D3200 lacked)

A fantastic morning on Higger Tor when it all just comes together. Albeit briefly.
At first, with the hill cloaked in low cloud, it didn't look too promising. However, the sun managed to sneak below the cloud line briefly as it cleared the horizon, then light up the mist with quite breath taking effect.
One of those morning that serves as a reminder why I love landscape photography and the places I visit so much!
Upper Padley
Padley Gorge
Located within a deep but narrow valley that begins near the redundant Grindleford Station (now a popular café), and runs northwards towards the outskirts of the City of Sheffield.
The gorge (within the valley) is wooded with a fast-flowing stream, the Burbage Brook, running through it. The gorge finishes at the edge of the woodland but the valley continues up to the bridge on the Hathersage road and beyond to open moorland.
A sign marking he beginning of the City of Sheffield is just a few hundred yards from the bridge on the Hathersage Road.

Just over the Derbyshire border and into South Yorkshire, Higger Tor stands within the boundary of the City of Sheffield.

Lovely light this evening. Lit up the rocks for ages until it eventually dropped below some cloud.

Quite a bit of snow there this morning and it was still falling.
Posted mainly so you can see how things are looking. I was hoping for a bit of light. But it didn't happen.
The view South West from the end of the wall at Carl Wark.
Classified as a hillfort, the purpose and date of Carl Wark is uncertain, ranging from Neolithic to early Medieval.

It's been a really busy few weeks. No time to do much photography or processing. I had a free night on Wednesday. I wanted to do some exercise but also wanted to take photos. In the end I cycled out to the Peak District from work. My camera with an 18-200 travel lens was in my bag but no tripod. I walked up to Higger (no bridleways). The light was fantastic. These shots are handheld with higher ISOs as I had no tripod. I know high ISO is frowned upon in landscape photography, but I think it's important to be there in the first place. I went back the next night with the right kit and the light wasn't anywhere near as good.
