Higger Tor is only 5-10 minutes drive from my father's house, so with a bit of persuasion I managed to grab a quick detour to see the last of the heather on the way home after a visit at the week-end
A fantastic morning on Higger Tor when it all just comes together. Albeit briefly.
At first, with the hill cloaked in low cloud, it didn't look too promising. However, the sun managed to sneak below the cloud line briefly as it cleared the horizon, then light up the mist with quite breath taking effect.
One of those morning that serves as a reminder why I love landscape photography and the places I visit so much!
Was a bit late up this morning (later than I intended), so only made it to Higger Tor, as it's only about 15 mins from home!
I thought that any colour might be over with quickly, as the forecast was for clearish skies, but it held on for a bit longer before disappearing into the cloud, not to return.
This one was taken about 20 mins after the previous shot, and the shows difference in light temperature.

Higger Tor or Higgar Tor is a gritstone tor in the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District National Park in England. It overlooks the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast.
The tor stands to the south west of Sheffield, just within the city boundary, about 200 metres (220 yd) east of the border with Derbyshire, which runs along the nearby road to Ringinglow. The village of Hathersage is approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the west.
A scene from the 1987 film The Princess Bride was filmed nearby at Carl Wark with Higger Tor visible in the background.

A handheld shot, it was far too windy up here this morning to risk using a tripod.
It's 3.45am as I leave my house enroute to the Peak District. All the weather channels predict a glourious day, perfect for a couple of hours photography. As I approach the Chesterfield juntion on the M1 it starts chucking it down with rain, "you have got to be joking", I'm not happy! The rain eases as I drive through Chesterfield and I can see clear sky, phew just a shower.
As the road climbs the temperature drops, excellent, maybe frost on Higger Tor. Then I notice some white stuff, snow, now I'm getting excited! Climbing out of Hathersage a sprinkling of snow covers the road and whispy clouds move across the sky in the strong breeze, perfect! I give silent thanks to the Weather God's.
Apart from the light and the view across to Carl Wark the real interest for me is the almost luminescent green of the lichen on the leading edges of the foreground rocks, I just hope I have manged to convey it in this shot.

Yet another misty morning on Higger Tor shot!
This one almost looks like an alien landscape - hard to believe its actually in Sheffield!
You can see Carl Wark in the middle distance.

Reaching the peak of Higger Tor from this side requires a certain level of fitness as you can imagine.

Taken exactly 2 minutes after the shot below. The sun had risen enough to start to light up the sandstone blocks. The mist below Higger Tor had moved on to reveal more of the landscape while another wave helped define Cark Wark in the distance. The scene had changed so much within a period of around 10 minutes.
Higger Tor Birds 01052021 - out very early this morning to have another look for Ring Ouzels around Higger Tor - conditions were a bit different to home - quite misty - but it wasn't long before this male popped up and I was able to track him for a few minutes along the edge - at one point the female briefly showed herself and then ducked back down in between the rocks

Another from last Friday evening on Higger Tor and the sun just pops out beneath the clouds for a last hurrah, well, more a slight chuckle than a complete hurrah!!
