Higger Tor and in the distance Carl Walk from a wander rounfdthe peaks the other day, light was still a little harsh but there was some nice clouds around.

Over Owler Tor - Heather 11082025

An early morning shot of Higger Tor. I was hoping to take a B&W and so was really disappointed when I got to Higher Tor that there were largely blue skies and the Sun that had only just come up was already hitting the side wall of the leaning block. I nearly didn't bother getting my camera out for a shot as it wasn't what I was hoping for. - I stopped around for a few minutes and am really pleased that I did a the results came out way better than anticipated. Its good to have a plan.

A view from the eastern trig point on Stanage Edge on a cold and windy morning, encompassing Higger Tor on the left all the way around to Win Hill on the right.

A five photo stitch.

Higger Tor or Higgar Tor is a gritstone tor in the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District National Park in England. It overlooks the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast.

The tor stands to the south west of Sheffield, east of the border with Derbyshire, which runs along the nearby road to Ringinglow.

A scene from the 1987 film The Princess Bride was filmed nearby at Carl Wark with Higger Tor visible in the background.

There are some shots that happen rather spontaneously and then there are others like this one. I've been chasing this since the start of the year, some time around February, I think.

I've attempted to get "the shot" at least once a month since I first spotted this composition, and it looked like my luck was to change on the evening of Thursday 10th August but again, I was foiled by nature. I returned the next morning with the slimmest of forecasts predicted for good light. Very slim.

The effort paid off and around ten of minutes of light broke out across the Burbage valley shortly after sunrise, allowing me to finally get the photograph how I had pre-visualised it.

I've included a photograph from the previous evening, as I really liked the overall palette that was created by the sky, if only there had been a little light on the foreground...still chasing!

I was out Friday night playing with my new 7-14mm lens and home made 'Frankenfilter' holder. I decided to walk over from Higger Tor and down to Carl Wark for the sunset.

I came across a lovely patch of cotton grass which I thought looked lovely back lit by the warm evening sun and found a low composition that also included Higger Tor while getting in close to the cotton grass.

There was a little bit of lens flare which was unavoidable shooting directly into the sun which I've removed (1/125 f6.3 @ 7mm NiSi 0.6 Hard ND grad filter)

A combination of strong wind and very poor light made last nights photography challenging, but the walk was bracing and enjoyable as ever. I decided to face away from the brighter sky and concentrate on the colours of the moor, and the landmarks of Carl Wark, Burbage rocks and the lower regions of the Hope Valley in the distance.

Between Higger Tor and Winyards Nick (en route to Over Owler Tor, there is a sheepfold, and in one corner there's a curious little metal picket fence - almost like a cemetery marking out a grave of someone important.

How feeble that fence is!

After a few decades, rain has rusted this hardened, man-made metal and yet in contrast, in the background, Higger's rocks stand silently proud of their millennial heritage.

Heather season in the Peak District

Another one from earlier this last week taken at sunrise on Higger Tor.

It was my last day off before nights so took the last opportunity to get out before going back to work, it was a last second decision with Anne's alarm being the trigger.

Really pleased I made the effort as I was treated to some lovely colours for a short while before the sun went behind the clouds.(1/13 f6.3 @ 11mm 0.9 reverse + 0.6 soft ND grad filters)

Monday morning I was up early meeting David up at Higger Tor for the sunrise. It was bitterly cold up there with a wind chill well below freezing but no actual frost on the ground. There wasn't a great deal of cloud around when the sun came up over the horizon giving us a fairly clear sky but just enough to add a nice bit of colour and warmth on such a cold morning.(Olympus EM-1 mkii 7-14mm f/2.8pro 1/13 f/6.3 @ 7mm Kase Filters Wolverine GND-R 1.2 (4 stop) reverse grad)

Heather beginning to bloom on Higger Tor in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Higger Tor is only 5-10 minutes drive from my father's house, so with a bit of persuasion I managed to grab a quick detour to see the last of the heather on the way home after a visit at the week-end

As you walk from Higger to Over Owler Tor, en route towards Winyards Nick, continue left of the Nick and you'll reach a crossroads of footpaths, Looking out on one of those paths gives a perfect view across the Hathersage Valley.

Another miserable morning... so here's a photo to hopefully brighten it up. Taken on Higger Tor on the morning of the 21st of June last year after spending the shortest night of the year wandering the Peak... I'll have to get down and do that again soon! Maybe a night lap of Kinder or something? Who needs sleep...

A little bit of a personal annoyance for me, by the way, is people's continued misspelling of this place. Even people who know the Peak well still spell this as "Higgor Tor" or even "Higor Tor"... it's crazy... it's only 6 letters long... how hard can it be?

H-I-G-G-E-R. Historically it comes from 'Higher Tor', so at no point has it ever been spelt with an 'o'.

Complaining over... enjoy the photo!

Was how long the sun came through the clouds this morning up on Higger Tor!!

Sunrise up on Higger Tor, looked like it was going to be clouded over until a few clear spots in the cloud appeared, a few minutes later the sun burst through for a few minutes of nice light.
