The title story of this collection formed the basis for the successful written The Mousetrap, which has been drawing full houses in London for sixty years in a row. The five other stories are less famous than the first, but no less exciting. And both the admirers of the famous Hercule Poirot and the slender old Miss Marple can indulge themselves

~~“Trains are relentless things, aren't they, Monsieur Poirot? People are murdered and die, but they go on just the same. I am talking nonsense, but you know what I mean."
"Yes, yes, I know. Life is like a train, Mademoiselle. It goes on. And it is a good thing that that is so."
"Why?"
"Because the train gets to its journey's end at last, and there is a proverb about that in your language, Mademoiselle."
"'Journey's end in lovers meeting.'" Lenox laughed. "That is not going to be true for me."
"Yes--yes, it is true. You are young, younger than you yourself know. Trust the train, Mademoiselle, for it is le bon Dieu who drives it."
The whistle of the engine came again.
"Trust the train, Mademoiselle," murmured Poirot again. "And trust Hercule Poirot. He knows.” ~~

Sometimes it is difficult to choose a photo of the same object. This is a different photo than the one I uploaded yesterday (see first comment box, if you missed that one). And I processed it more to give it a mysterious touch. Thought it might be interesting to show you this version too.
have a nice Tuesday ;-))

The highlight of Christie's book — about a murder committed on a snowbound luxury train — may be Hercule Poirot's quotable quip: "I do not like your face, Mr. Ratchett."

Man sees all kinds of things in life, but this is something special. Many will think that it is an illusion, but the man really found himself under the rails.

It is one of the few, if not the only port of the French Riviera in deep water.
It was already used as a commercial port by the Greeks and Romans, but it had a disadvantage, that of being badly sheltered from the East winds. That's why at the beginning of the 20th century two jetties were erected which helped to provide better protection but not totally effective.

Recently I happened to be reading Agatha Christie's (1890-1976) Appointment with Death (1938). Detective Hercule Poirot is called upon to help solve a murder. In an archaeological dig at Petra, Jordan, the dreadful matriarch Mrs Boynton has been found poisoned, and it was discovered that the medicine used was derived from Digitalis, or Foxglove.
This pretty plant was cultivated in the past primarily for its pretty, colorful flowers. Its working on the heart wasn't discovered until the end of the eighteenth century.
Ah! Weep for Mrs Boynton, though she was not much loved. The skies have already rained on our Floxglove in the Hortus!
Port Hercules (French: Port Hercule) is the only deep-water port in Monaco. The port has been in use since ancient times. The modern port was completed in 1926, and underwent substantial improvements in the 1970s. It covers almost 40 acres (160,000 m2), enough to provide anchorage for up to 700 vessels. The port is located in the La Condamine district. Harbour pilots are required for all vessels longer than 30 metres. The depth of water in the harbour ranges from seven metres for standard berths and up to 40 metres for the outer piers and cruise ship docks.

It's a mystery to me, the game commences
For the usual fee, plus expenses
Confidential information, it's a diary
This is my investigation, it's not a public inquiry
I go checking out the reports, digging up the dirt
You get to meet all sorts in this line of work
Treachery and treason, there's always an excuse for it
And when I find the reason I still can't get used to it
And what have you got at the end of the day?
What have you got to take away?
A bottle of whiskey and a new set of lies
Blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes
Scarred for life, no compensation

Auguste Bartholdi’s statue, sculpted in 1888, represents the public judge Jean Roesselmann. He passed away while defending Colmar and the municipal liberties against the troops and the covetousness of the Bishop of Strasbourg. He is also considered as the first hero of Colmar and has similarities with Hercule de Peyerimhoff, the mayor of the city from 1855 to 1877, who was relieved from his duties because he refused to submit to the German authorities. Taken away by the Germans in 1943, the bronze statue was restored and reinstalled in 1945 on a white stone monument decorated with four fishes.

Pepper came to me as a foster pup. However, adopters kept giving up on her within a week of taking her on. She is a lovely little girl with a big heart and a big personality to match. Her bark may be ear piercing, but her love knows no limits. She absolutely adores Antonio, Hercule and Pooh Bear and she is my little shadow.

BLACK COFFEE – LACY J DALTON
We couldn't get in at the restaurant we wanted
we didn't think to book
so we were re-directed across the road
and found a cosy comfy nook
this poster caught my eye and so
I pointed shot and took
a little boy from olden days
who caught a big fish on a little hook
the carvery was excellent
I met and congratulated the cook
we piled our plates as high as we could
we signed our names in the visitor's book
the place was a little dark but not shabby
it had it's own style; conversation babbled like a brook
we felt relaxed and satiated and happy
as we left for the theatre for which we DID book
an amateur production of Agatha Christie's
play called Black Coffee; well worth a look
the performers were brilliant; very professional
we couldn't second-guess who was the crook
Hercule Poirot arrived looking a bit dishevelled
in a well-worn well-creased linen jacket he forsook
to press it as well as Captain Hasting's trousers
the audience laughed; our shoulders shook
the stage was set; the lights were dimmed
until the interval came and everyone took
a break for an ice-cream, fresh air and ablutions
returned for the final half of this lesser known book
I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner and visit
to the Palace Theatre as we undertook
to applaud the wonderful players of this play
sad to say goodnight as the room fell dark as a rook.

======================
Many people confuse Monte Carlo with Monaco, when they are two different things. Monaco is the entire princely state, the 2nd smallest country in the world and an ultra-luxurious tax haven. Monte Carlo is only its most exclusive ward, where both the famous casino, the luxury shops and the Hotel de Paris are located.
La Condamine is the lower part of the city, located between Montecarlo and La Roche (old quarter). It even looks (for the Monaco standards) "less expensive".
The best view of it is from the square in front of the palace of the princes, above the ancient and medieval town of Monaco.
