I came across the same family of Trumpeter Swans that I've photographed on the 13th. This time, they were more inclined to pose.

Wildlife and nature at it's best on the lower mainland of British Columbia. Description from trails.com
Pitt Poulder, through which you drive on your way to Pitt Lake, has been dyked and drained at different periods since the 1870s, the main reclamation being made by Dutch settlers in the early 1950s. To the north, between farmland and lake, 1500 ha (3750 acres) of water and marsh are preserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Although the Pitt River and the lake are tidal, a system of dykes and pump houses controlling the water levels counteracts brackishness and has enabled freshwater marsh and spirea bog to develop. To encourage waterfowl, grass and plants have been allowed to grow and nesting areas have been built, protected from people and predators by canals; water management schemes of beavers and muskrats are kept in check. Minks, foxes, coyotes, bears and deer visit or inhabit the area.

You'll notice I'm not centering the "subjects". We didn't talk about this but I always try and ensure that my subject isn't dead centre. This is called the Rule of Thirds. I'm sorry we didn't cover this, but basically, the simple version is that we want to move our subject over to one side or the other (or up or down) so that it is NOT bullseye centre. That's it.

Reifel Bird Sanctuary, Ladner, B.C. I don't think he/she enjoyed waiting in the downpour while I got my camera ready.

A wide aperture allows a faster shutter speed, however the water is less interesting and we have less reflection of the building. Which do you prefer?
