Morning all!
It's been a long time since I've posted, mainly due to being snowed under with James' book but also we're now into wedding season so I've literally been non-stop!
Some of you will already know, I've recently become the proud owner of a Sony A7. Unfortunately I've barely been able to get out and test it, but I was able to sneak out and grab a cheeky sunset at Alport Height a few weeks back.
It had been a fairly average day and upon arriving at Alport Height it was cloudy and I could see the rain in the distance heading towards me, which eventually hit me. I sat back in the car for a while hoping it would pass and in my favour, it did, producing some wonderfully stormy light!
I've not really gotten to grips with the interface on the Sony just yet, it's a big learning curve from my Canon, but so far the dynamic range is fantastic and the quality is really crisp and sharp. Can't wait to try it out more.

The (Australian native-) Gymea lily is one of the tallest flowers in the world. It can reach up to 4 meters in height. Of course it is not as tall as the 'Tower of Power', that is just the PoV. Such lovely flowers

Castel del Monte, Andria (BT), Puglia, Italia
Castel del Monte, 37 mi from Bari, is one of the 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy.
Commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th Century, the Castle is a massive and dominating octagonal structure that sits on a small stretch of the Murge plateau in Apulia, 11 mi from Andria.
The mathematical and astronomical rigor of the Castle’s design, based on eight as a guiding number, and its position, emphatically studied so as to create symmetries of light during the winter solstice and summer equinox, have merged into a symbolism appealing to scholars for centuries.
Eight are the sides of the Castle, and eight are the rooms on the ground floor as well as on the second floor; the rooms are trapezoidal, and placed in an order so as to form yet more octagons. The corners of the Castle are attached to eight towers that are, of course, octagonal. It is said that inside the Castle’s courtyard was installed a pool of water, itself another octagon.

Glorious colorful roofless shrine of Shikari Mata / Devi Temple (The Hunter Goddess) at a height of 2850 meters above sea level near Janjehli valley.
Shikari Devi shrine is an ancient structure believed to be from the period of the Pandavas. Its said that the Pandavas came to this region during their exile. The Goddess Kali worshipped here in the name of Shikari Devi, meaning hunter Goddess, was mainly worshipped by hunters, who thought goddess would protect them from attacks or any danger befalling on them and would keep them safe.
Shikari Devi temple is made at the highest peak in the whole of Mandi district and it offers breathtaking views of the valleys, meadows and the mountains. The main shrine is said to remain without snow in winters when the rest of the area is covered in deep snow. The entire experience at mesmerizing Janjehli was the most memorable, enriching and the best one out of all my other experiences at different places in the Himalayas!

So this is a setup shot taken to show what I did to take the previous, "One Word" shot.
This was a real world, practical setup to create the shot. No heavy-handed "Photoshop" work was done to create the image of the planet and word inside the drop of water.
To do this you need to set a lot up before you take the shot. Three things need to be lined up for a successful shot.
1) The subject and camera need to be lined up so you can see the drop of water on the end of the blade of grass in this case. Distance for the magnification and height to just see the thing.
2) Then I bring in the background/refraction subject. That needs to be lit harshly, yet no spill over light onto the drop of water. I use a focusable hand held flashlight. The angle of this light is very important.
But the distance of the background is something that you need to figure out by moving it up/down, left/right and forward and back. Each direction makes a small change in the refracted image inside the drop of water.
The background can be anything you want it to be. For the image I created I used a restriction free image that NASA released to the world a while ago. Its called, "The Blue Marble."
I then drew the letters for the word (a couple times actually to get the size right) and colored them in and cut them out using a razor blade from the single stick labels I made them out of. Then I stuck them onto the image.
This is a real image that was created in a practical way. Not all done in photoshop. Hell, I don't even own that software.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube covering this technique, just search Water Droplet Refraction.

A woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae. There are over three hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. R_22501

Echinacea is a genus, or group of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family. The genus Echinacea has ten species, which are commonly called coneflowers. They are found only in eastern and central North America, where they grow in moist to dry prairies and open wooded areas. They have large, showy heads of composite flowers, blooming from early to late summer. Species are herbaceous, drought-tolerant perennial plants growing up to 140 cm in height. The flowers are collected together into single rounded heads at the ends of long peduncles. Like all members of the sunflower family, the flowering structure is a composite inflorescence, with rose-colored (rarely yellow or white) florets arranged in a prominent, somewhat cone-shaped head – 'cone-shaped' because the petals of the outer ray florets tend to point downward (are reflexed) once the flower head opens, thus forming a cone. 53362

Pretty settled on the design for the roof section; I knew those 1x1s with sticks would come in handy eventually. Happy with the height too, it encompasses the mech nicely.
