Saw this beautiful painted turtle yesterday sunning himself on a log. He was far away behind a bunch of reeds so I kept creeping closer, hiding behind the reeds in front of him. I got a soaker in my rubber boots and was sinking in the mud. But it was worth it! I was close enough to get a few shots before he noticed me and jumped into the water.

Let’s hope the shut down of Flickr this Wednesday for maintenance will finally fix all the problems everyone’s been having. The last few days have been terrible for me. Pages won’t fully load and it takes forever to leave comments.

Have a wonderful new week Flickr friends! Tina and the Puglets xo

I would like to thank all of you that have taken the time to view and comment on my photos, it is very much appreciated.

Snapping Turtle stopped for a break, or maybe just wanted me to take a picture of her.

Went for a nature hike this past Thanksgiving weekend and spotted these two little lovers that found a quiet spot on a fallen log in the middle of the pond.

I would like to thank all of you that have taken the time to view and comment on my photos, it is very much appreciated.

Known to be one of the wisest of souls in the animal kingdom, sea turtles have played a significant role in the myths and legends of many cultures worldwide.

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is the largest of all the hard-shelled sea turtles, growing up to one meter long and weighing 130-160 kg.

The green turtle is known for its smooth, heart-shaped shell and paddle-like flippers. It gets its name from the greenish colour of its body fat. While green turtles have inhabited the world’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years, few large nesting populations remain, and there are concerns about their survival.

Gazing into the spellbinding, mesmerizing eyes of a sea turtle, one can travel back in time, 150 million years to be exact and experience the world through the eyes of an ancient being that survived the age of dinosaurs.

These enchanting creatures are associated with our embodied evolution on Earth and our physical existence, reminding us to stay grounded and be close to Earth, treating it with care.

HMM everyone!

Detail of my softshell jacket.

“Softshell” is a class of knit or woven materials, made from polyester and nylon, used to make technical outdoor clothing that essentially bridges the gap between waterproof hardshell jackets and highly breathable fleece jackets. They’re more breathable (but less water and wind resistant), more flexible, and generally more durable than hardshell materials, and more protective than fleece. - See more at: www.backcountry.com/explore/what-the-hell-is-softshell#st...

American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus)

New Jersey

A reprocess and post of this older image..

This is the first image in a three image set, which will show this Oystercatchers mollusc feeding technique. Each image will tell a bit of the story...

The Oystercatchers long orange bill is not only for probing in the sand and mud, but is excellent at prying open molluscs like clams and mussels. I've read that some Oystercatchers have a more blunt shaped bill tip and will use it to smash open the shell of some molluscs species to get at its meat. Although I can't imagine the bill being strong enough to smash through this hardshell Cherrystone Clam.

When this Oystercatcher (pictured above) located a clam. It pryed it open, then worked it around a bit and sniped the adducter muscle (which opens and closes the clam) and split the clam in half exposing the clams soft edible tissues.

Lifespan 30-150 years.

The Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), also known as the common coot, or Australian coot, is a member of the rail and crake bird family, the Rallidae. It is found in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Africa. The Eurasian coot is 32–42 cm long and weighs 585–1,100 g, and is largely black except for the white frontal shield (which gave rise to the phrase as bald as a coot, in use as early as 1430). As a swimming species, the coot has partial webbing on its long strong toes. The juvenile is paler than the adult, has a whitish breast, and lacks the facial shield; the adult black plumage develops when about 3–4 months old, but the white shield is only fully developed at about one year old. This is a noisy bird with a wide repertoire of crackling, explosive, or trumpeting calls, often given at night. The coot breeds across much of the Old World on freshwater lakes and ponds. It occurs and breeds in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. The species has recently expanded its range into New Zealand. It is resident in the milder parts of its range, but migrates further south and west from much of Asia in winter as the waters freeze. The Eurasian coot is much less secretive than most of the rail family, and can be seen swimming on open water or walking across waterside grasslands. It is an aggressive species, and strongly territorial during the breeding season, and both parents are involved in territorial defence. During the non-breeding season they may form large flocks, possibly related to predator avoidance.

Freshwater turtles are reptiles with hard shells that protect them from predators. They spend most of their life in the water only coming on land to migrate between water bodies or to nest. Australia is home to about 23 species of freshwater turtle. All but one of these species belong to the family Chelidae, which is found only in Australasia and South America. These ‘side-necked’ turtles retract their head and neck beneath their shell by folding it to one side, rather than drawing their head backwards as most of the world’s species of turtles and tortoises do. Australia is also home to 6 of the 7 species of marine turtle, but lacks the truly land-based tortoises that occur on all other continents except Antarctica. New South Wales is home to 7 species of native freshwater turtle, two of which are found nowhere else. North American species of freshwater turtles like the red-eared slider turtle have also been found in the Sydney region, probably as a result of people releasing imported pets into local waterways. nach dem Regenschauer

Old New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, Wilcox County GA.(A newer sanctuary sits just southwest of here.) According to a Georgia Historical Marker on the grounds, New Hope is very significant in the history of the Baptist faith. It was in this congregation that a rift among members led to the formation of the Missionary Baptist Church. The advocates of mission work who left this church gave rise to a whole new lexicon among Baptists, and the Missionairies gave the Primitives such unflattering nicknames as hardshells, straight jackets, and iron jackets...To my knowledge, hardshell is the only one still in wide usage today.

'May he who loves not others, love himself.'

In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae who was known for his beauty. Narcissus was proud, in that he disdained those who loved him, causing some to take their own life to prove their devotion to his striking beauty.

The goddess of revenge noticed this behaviour and decided to punish Narcissus. Once, during the summer, he was getting thirsty after hunting, and the goddess lured him to a pool where he leaned upon the water and saw himself in the bloom of youth. Narcissus did not realize it was merely his own reflection and fell deeply in love with it, as if it were somebody else. Unable to leave the allure of his image, he eventually realized that his love could not be reciprocated and he melted away from the fire of passion burning inside him, eventually turning into a gold and white flower.

Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, a fixation with oneself and one's physical appearance or public perception.

These beetles were doing their productivity stuff at our office garden, so that their copulation can increase the garden population!

From fairest creatures we desire increase,

That thereby beauty's Rose might never die

But, as the riper should by time decease,

His tender heir might bear his memory.

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,

Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,

Making a famine where abundance lies.

Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.

Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament

And only herald to the gaudy spring,

Within thine own bud buriest thy content

And, tender churl, mak'st waste in niggarding.

Pity the world, or else this glutton be:

To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

When you open a little-neck (one of our native, Cape Cod hard shell clams or "quahog"), you never know how much purple you'll find.

The special ones get a place on our windowsill along with other beach related knickknacks. At some point a little amber colored, surf-worn pebble was plopped into this one, resembling an oyster's pearl.

I liked these three colors together - the jade green, the deep purple, the light amber and the milky white for my window sill submission this week to Macro Mondays.

Quahogs create real pearls. They are very rare, and occur in various shades of white and purple. The dark purple ones highly prized!

We have been getting a lot of quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) from the town grant. This one is about the size of my fist. They are plump and tasty - great for chowder or stuffing. The shells this season have a lot of purple in them. Shells like this one were used by Native Americans to make wampum, which was used as currency in colonial times.

This tiny baby quahog shell measures only 2 mm at its widest point. It stands out sharply against a bed of wet beach sand.

These tiny purple shells litter the beach at all times of the year. Sometimes they are more plentiful than others, collecting thickly in naturally sculpted ribbons, ridges, and ripples in the sand. Their accumulations create intricate and colorful patterns.

These shells are the "spat," or miniature offspring of our local hard-shell, edible clams called quahogs (pronounced "ko-hogs", not "quayhogs"). They are eaten raw, steamed, baked, grilled, stuffed, and used in sauces and chowder.

I found this little peanut hidden in one of my planters left by a squirrel hiding nuts for the winter.

Thank you for your kind comments and favs. All are greatly appreciated.

The DSV Hardshell was designed to propel itself though the oceans silently, without the excess noise of a loud propeller. In doing so, it is able to get close enough to study sea creatures without scaring them away.

Everyone's favorite Hero in a Hardshell, the amazing Pudge.

No matter the terrain or situation, the DSN hardsuit division has equipped their host The Atreides Empire to dominate.

The Rhino is seen here staging for a suburban/light forest operation near a recently abandoned rail station.

Equipped with a melee saw, the quad rocket launcher, and the standard anti infantry auto tracking mini cannons above the dome this little beast packs a big punch. A unique accessory is the hardened carbo-steel shield.

The Gull is depicted mid-flight on mission to an undisclosed mountainous location to perform aerial and possibly light ground recon. Equipped with a melee lightsaber, a mid-caliber pistol, and the standard anti infantry auto tracking mini cannons above the dome, the Gull is speedy but able to hold its own. A unique accessory is the jet pack/maneuvering wings package.

Finally, the Reaver is shown on the deck of a picket cruiser still stationed above the DA world, ready for EVA operations. The Reaver is equipped with a nano-edge melee sword, a quad rocket launcher, a laser rifle, and the standard anti infantry auto tracking mini cannons above the dome. There's no EVA or boarding action too intense for this hardware. Two unique accessories are the maneuvering thruster backpack and the grapple hook seen over the left arm.

All hardsuits base hardware is the same, as such the height of the completed suits all fall under 8 bricks, as seen by the blue container and stack of grey boxes in two of the images (the wings and sword fold down). This enables a standard carriage container which yields a happy fleet logistics division!

This build and more to come on this account are for the game Decisive Action 4 on Flickr. Come on over and check it out!

When you go to the Highlands on holiday, I don't believe it is necessary to go all 4X4 Daktari style as if about to cross the Namib desert and through the Congo forests to Timbuktu. There is civilisation up here. You can even find a shop for food without having to kill anything on the way. So what is that box on the side of new LandRover Defenders for? Lunch box? Wouldn't a whicker basket look better? Rugged brief case with critical communication devices? Vanity box? Emergency rescue kit? Cut here? Eject here? This one badly needed some spray on mud to look like they had actually been off road. So what is that box for? Apparently it is for things that you don't want inside the vehicle. Like muddy boots, wetsuits, soiled clothes, wet dogs, badly behaved children, a nagging wife (that's why it is lockable) or takeaway leaking vindaloo curry containers.

I'm going to buy a shiny Barbie pink hardshell suitcase and screw it to the side of my red Honda to make it look like I am going on holiday too

I loved the old Lurid Men's Adventure Mag covers of the '50s and '60s, and wouldn't want my little cuties to miss all the fun! The weirdest thing about these old mags--to me, anyway--was their sheer availability. Up into the early 70s, only 1 convenience store (on the wrong side of the tracks) in our little hardshell Baptist burg sold PLAYBOY, and it was kept under the counter. But even back in the 50s these mags with their lingerie S/M fetish covers were right out there with FIELD AND STREAM and LADIES HOME JOURNAL on the magazine racks of every grocery store and drug store in town. Whatever, it WAS a gloriously carefree and wonderful pre-feminist and just generally Politically Incorrect time to be a kid!

Lost beauty is a critical poem written by Jwani Mwaikusa (1952-2010) that clearly depicts the effects both colonialism and neo-colonialism have had on Africans and African culture in general.

LOST BEAUTY

By Jwani Mwaikusa

There are only white women around:

Awful fakes of white females

Reflecting an awful mass of ugliness:

And I want a lady

To mount the rostrum with

And announce to the world:

“Black is beautiful!”

Yes,

I want a black beauty queen

With ebony thighs and huge hips

With skin sweating blackness

And a face dark as the night

And bare breasts bouncing

Vigour and energy.

But my eyes, oh my eyes!

They don’t see anything black;

It’s only white skins and masks

Flashing past and slashing,

Destroying my sight so

I can’t get what I want.

I cry and sing to them

The inbred tune of our people,

I shout to them in the black tongue

But no black sister hears me;

Only white masks I see.

I turn and weep upon myself

And then, only then I realize:

I am not black either.
