After preparing for weeks, DGN students in the Child Development class welcomed their first little people into the classroom for the first time! And for many of the preschoolers, this was their first time being at school! #handsonlearning #WeAreDGN #99learns
Each year Justin Borsato’s Grade 6 and 7 students at Britannia Elementary design, build, and race a mousetrap or balloon-powered car as a way to learn about physics and math concepts.
This project also partners with the UBC Engineering Department, and UBC students volunteer their time over their reading break to mentor Britannia students on basic engineering and physics principles.
Each team had also worked together to brand their carts and create a presentation showcasing their cart’s unique features. Not lacking in creativity, cart names included: Star Cars, Super Mobile and The Flash, The Ugly Duckling and Sabre Toothed Llama.

Olivia is standing on a rock to get a better view of Lake Superior. At 5 1/2 years old, she was proud to have her own camera to take pictures on this trip. It's interesting to see what she wants to remember through pictures.
Some of the pictures from the trip/first week of homeschooling are going in a homemade book that will document the trip and her memories of it. Others will be put in her binder/notebook about Minnesota (a huge unit study we did last year) and Africa (a unit study we're doing now).
This is a freshwater stingray that you could touch. There were three swimming around at the aquarium in Duluth.
Freshwater stingrays are located only in Africa and South America. (We are doing a homeschool unit study on Africa so this was an added bonus to see the stingray!)
Sophia wanted to sit on the ledge like her sister, Olivia...but with strong winds and high waves plus the Paul R. Tregurtha coming by in a few minutes...it just didn't seem like a real smart decision.
So, this is the view that a 7 1/2 year old had.

For their 6th TogetherGreen Volunteer Day event, Los Angeles Audubon held a fun, hands-on environmental education day at Leo Politi Elementary School, and had over 400 people attend! It served as the culminating event to a year-long process of student-student mentorship, science illustration instruction, and hands-on habitat restoration.
Students in LA Audubon's Baldwin Hills Greenhouse Program worked with elementary school students and their families, educating the urban community about the threatened habitats and species of the Ballona Creek watershed. Through hands-on, student-generated activites, participants learned about coastal sage scrub and sandy beach habitat, and got to explore the school's new habitat garden.
