Sarah drew this phrase that my wife and I say to each other. Then the amazing sarah sent us a (NOTprint) piece!

She was recently featured on design sponge!

I can't wait to frame it and hang it. Thank you Sarah :)

This sign was handlettered by a sign painter in Bristol, Va.. A man named Carl Jesse Sr..

Mr. Jesse had his own sign shop in what was once bustling Bristol. In addition to commercial work, he said he used to paint signs for Bristol Motor Speedway, employing 15+ sign painters in his shop.

He said that on any given day, a painter would do dozens of different signs -- some in the shop and others in the field. In fact, some would just do the Sunbeam Bread girl on billboards throughout the Tri-Cities. Still others would do lettering on autos, windows, etc.. All could letter and paint, and he said that most would go through several years of apprenticeship before actually getting to letter important signs.

I had this sign painted for personal reasons. I wanted to see a true craftsman at work. He took about 20 or 30 minutes to do this sign and repeatedly apologized to me for the quality. Frankly, I think it rocks. He's a true craftsmen and the legacy of folks like Mr. Jessee needs to continue. These folks are certainly a dying breed.

One local sign maker, Darrell Reed (Darrell Reed Signs & Lettering) in Pulaski, just quit several months ago. I visited his sign shop with the hopes of having him make me a sign and he said he won't do any more work—for health reasons.

Not many left in this region who know this skill. Would love to meet more and learn more about how to hand letter.

Spent about 2.5 hours of my Sunday morning drawing this flyer for our upcoming show at the Black Cat Backstage in DC

First I drew it on paper then I transferred it to Linen. I used too porous a piece of linen, next time I will use a more dense piece.
