This was the book my mother used when she went to Penrith High School NSW in the late 1930's.
It has had a lot of use since then.
Sadly I cannot show the cover as over the years it acquired a 'timber-look' Contact cover and is missing a few pages :-(
I still find the book useful and decided to photograph and share a few of the pages on flickr.

A jolly, and well produced handbook to the "healthgiving springs and entertainment" of the historic city of Bath and produced by the City Council's Spa Committee. It is not dated but by the style of publication, and the cropped use of Dora Batty's 1935 poster for the Great Western Railway who served the city, it is mid-late 1930s. It is intended to sell the many attraction of the city to tourists and visitors.
Essex born Dora M. Batty (1891 - 1966) was a noted artist, designer and teacher who produced many posters for the Underground Group and London Transport in the inter-war years. This cover has a suitably modern Georgian look about it with lines on the scroll from the King's Bath Pump.

A wonderful book issued by the then well-known printing house of W S Cowell based in Ipswich, Suffolk, and who were part of the mid-twentieth century 'revival' of printing that was seen in some parts of the UK printing industry. Cowell's in some ways bridged the gap between the 'fine' and craft print houses and fully commercial bulk printers - this post-war publication was designed to show the depth and breadth of their offer - showing typefaces as well as processes available. To illustrate these they reproduced sections, examples and pages from various publications using some of the finest commercial artists and illustrators.
This page, set in Baskerville, is illustrated by John Nash and is from Ruskin's "Harbours of England" and is very charming.
This would be very funny if it were not so true. I attack this philosophy each and every chance I get.

On Saturday 30 June 1951, almost 60 years ago to the day, the first ‘Bangor Civic Week’ began. This image appeared in the souvenir handbook, which I acquired recently.
The Civic Week opening ceremony at the Town Hall featured the Laganvale Silver Band with a ‘march past of youth organisations’, followed by a religious service for the lucky youths in Castle Park. Other events that day included an ‘open rowing boat fishing competition’ in Bangor bay and performances by the Laganvale, Cleland Memorial and other ‘major bands’ at the Marine Gardens.
The 1951 Civic Week came about as a result of the town council’s desire to make a contribution to the Festival of Britain. The week’s festivities included various exhibitions ranging from art and crafts to postage stamps, photographs of ‘old Bangor’ and even an exhibition of ‘public health’. Band performances were popular, including the Royal Ulster Constabulary Band, the Cleland Memorial Pipe Band, the Agnes Street (Belfast) Temperance and Laganvale Silver Bands. Sporting activities included a gala ‘Festival of Sport’ at Ward Park, a ‘children’s sports meeting’ at Clandeboye Park and special football, hockey, bowling, tennis and swimming events. The National Fire Service gave a display of ‘modern fire-fighting and rescue methods’ at the Esplanade; there was outdoor Irish dancing; a talent competition with a £5 first prize up for grabs and the 9th annual Bangor Horse & Cattle Show & Gymkhana was held in Castle Park.
