Kryptonite and its many colors came up in a discussion recently, and I used the analogy of Red K recently to describe how allergies do something different to me every year.

A cashmere cableknit cardi + plenty of pearls = The Official Preppy Handbook + Emily Post’s Etiquette. Lilly Pulitzer’s not my style soulmate, but her printed princess persona is appealingly optimistic & a precursor to Diane von Furstenberg’s power (wrap) dressing. Lilly’s psychedelic patchwork skirt charms with its under the sea story & practicality (secret shorts underneath)… Fashionshesays.com.

Henney and Dudley, Whittlesey House. 1939.

Picked this up today at the car boot sale at Matford, Exeter, for £1.50. It's full of diagrams and formulae - probably a lot that isn't relevant these days, but I don't suppose the way light travels through glass has changed much since the 1930s.

Taken on the rusty metal steps that lead up to the front door of our flat. Processed in onOne's Perfect B&W. I originally took this one in B&W mode, but with the camera saving RAW+JPG, and Aperture using the JPG as the master. I switched it over to the RAW file to get the colour, then applied the 'Ansel in the Valley' filter in Perfect B&W. I then used the colour brush at just 7% intensity to brush a little bit of colour back into the book. I don't usually like the selective colour look, but it can be nice when used sparingly enough. I think I quite like it here. Capturing the RAW gave me that option, which was useful, though it is at the expense of some much bigger files.

A wonderful book issued by the then well-known printing house of W S Cowell based in Ipswich, Suffolk, and who were part of the mid-twentieth century 'revival' of printing that was seen in some parts of the UK printing industry. Cowell's in some ways bridged the gap between the 'fine' and craft print houses and fully commercial bulk printers - this post-war publication was designed to show the depth and breadth of their offer - showing typefaces as well as processes available. To illustrate these they reproduced sections, examples and pages from various publications using some of the finest commercial artists and illustrators.

This shows a double spread with text, in Baskerville, from Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy with a splendid lithograph by Barnett Freedman - designed to show Cowell's mastery of lithographic reproduction.

This seems to be one of a series of "official handbooks" issued by some of the Regional Development Boards to promote trade, industries and business in their region. Like many municipal handbooks they turned to the well known publishers of such volumes; E. J. Burrow of Cheltenham.

The South East England Development Board covered the Counties of Essex and Kent as well as, given the inclusion of one lone London borough St. Pancras Metropolitan Borough Council, London. The Board had various local authority members other than the County Councils and included both the Harlow Development Corporations in Essex. The Port of London Authority appears as does the local Gas Board (but not the Electricity Board!) and some other societies and institutions.

The handbook gives a good introduction to the area and its towns, alongs with the industries and developments underway such as a section on the construction of the new Dartford Tunnel that would physically connect both counties. Undated the text does eventually give c.1959 as the year. The front cover has been badly damaged by someone removing a sticker so there has been, unusually for me, a degree of photo reconstruction here.

Handbook of Leadership Theory and Practice: A Harvard Business School Centennial Colloquium.

Editors: Nitin Nohria and Rakesh Khurana

Publication Date: January 26, 2010

Description: The study of leadership suffers intellectual neglect and has yet to be considered a serious academic discipline. And though the mission statements of most business schools profess to 'develop leaders who make a difference in the world', these same schools produce hardly any serious scholarship or research to advance our understanding of leadership. To fill this void, Nitin Nohria and Rakesh Khurana have invited leading scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds to take stock of what we know about leadership and to set an agenda for future research. Based on a Harvard Business School Centennial Colloquium, this edited volume brings together the most important scholars from fields as diverse as psychology, sociology, economics, and history to shape the academic discipline of leadership.

About the Editors: Nitin Nohria is the Richard P. Chapman Professor or Business Administration, Senior Associate Dean, and Director of Faculty Development at Harvard Business School. He is the author of numerous books and articles.

Rakesh Khurana is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, and author of numerous important articles and books in the areas of leadership and management.
