Hood Canal near Hamma Hamma on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State

The Alfama is the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river. Its name comes from the Arabic al-ḥamma, meaning "hot fountains" or "baths," akin to "hammam". The district includes the freguesias (parishes) of São Miguel, Santo Estêvão, São Vicente de Fora and part of the two streets, "Freguesia da Sé: Rua do Barão" and "Rua São João da Praça". It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.

The Rua do Barão is one of the streets of the Freguesia da Sé, which begins at the Rua São João da Praça (where once stood the Door of the Alfama) and ends at Rua Augusto Rosa (at the Cathedral's walls). The toponym "Rua do Barão" is because João Fernandes da Silveira, the first Baron of Alvito, minister of Portuguese kings Dom Afonso V and Dom João II, lived here.

During the times of Moorish rule, Alfama constituted the whole of the city, which later spread to the West (Baixa neighbourhood). Alfama became inhabited by the fishermen and the poor, and its condition as the neighbourhood of the poor continues to this day.

The 1755 Lisbon earthquake did not destroy the Alfama, which has remained a labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. Lately the neighbourhood has been restored with the renovation of the old houses and new restaurants where Fado Portuguese typical is sometimes played.

Overlooking the Alfama is the medieval Castle of São Jorge, royal residence until the early 16th century with views of the city. In the slopes of Alfama there are other terraces (miradouros) from which to see the city, like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, near the church of the same name and over remnants of the Moorish city walls, and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol (Gates of the Sun). Near Miradouro of Santa Luzia is located the Museum of Decorative Arts (Museu de Artes Decorativas), a 17th-century mansion.

From 2012, Alfama is part of the freguesia of Santa Maria Maior.

Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral (12th–14th centuries), the oldest of the city and located to the West of the neighbourhood, the Convent of the Grace (Convento da Graça, 18th century), near the Castle, the mannerist Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (late 16th–18th century), where the Kings of the House of Braganza are buried, and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia (17th century), now converted into a National Pantheon for important Portuguese personalities.

With Monday being Memorial Day, my delivery isn't until Tuesday, so I'll have a day extra to make my current delivery in Fresno California. This means I'll have a day to catch up with everyone between now and then.

Took advantage of the extra time this morning to spend almost an hour around the Hamma Hamma River in Washington photographing the tidal flats, an old bridge. and other scenic sites close by. I parked across from the Hama Hama Oyster Saloon in Lilliwaup. There are several large mounds there, which upon closer inspection turned out to be oyster shells.

About my links. I include them from time to time, mostly for myself, but glad to share them, look if you're interested, but please don't feel obligated. I won't get my feelings hurt or think less of you.

Oyster shell mound, not pretty. just kinda interesting.

Hamma Hamma Bridge and where I parked. There are two bridges like this one and I crossed, rather ran across both. Notice there's no bike or walking area to safely cross, so I looked for no vehicles coming either way. then ran. Again not a pretty picture, just interesting.

My friend Bob Griesel and I wound up alongside the Hamma Hamma River on Hood Canal and found these amazing leaves on an old stump. Some light filtered through the trees and the polarizer saturated the hues a bit. Yes, an actual river image should be in the works.

Thank you for your warm and kind visits my flickr friends as we hunker down for winter here in the NW! :)

After a few weeks of not being able to get to the Bancrot Garden, I was about to procrastinate until Friday, but I got the April email: "What's in Bloom at Ruth Bancroft Garden." Seven species that I have not seen in flower. The problem is that what's presented concentrates on plants that will flower for the entire month. As I found out when I went there at noon today, there were at least nine species in bloom, and I wasn't willing to take the chance that they would only flower for two of three days.

This will break up my "wildflowers from the west" that I had started two days ago. They can waut a few more days or years. But a cactus called "The Old Lady Cactus" for unknown reasons, that has beautiful deep-rose colored half-inch blossoms in a circle mimicing the stonecrop like center at the top could not be denied.

Besides, those of you who know me and my travels in Washington state know that I love the name of my favoritely named river, the Hamma Hamma, on the way to Port Angeles. Watch out for lumber trucks if you're goung to get out of the car (on a curve) to smell the roses or, as in my case, get a shot of an eagle with a freshly caught salmon in its talons and about to feast on the banks of the river. I didn't get the shot and still have no photos of an eagle, but I'm still alive although the blast from an air horn of a lumber truck barreling around the bend may have been responsible for what I thought was my first (and last) heart attack!

View Large to see that these tiny intricate flowers have six tiny notched petals making it look like twelve. Might make a difference to near sighted bees and hummingbirds.

Along the Hamma Hamma River near Hood Canal, WA with Bob Griesel. We have had some fun outings in his Jeep and he has the newer Nikon Z7 body that I got to play with. I'm doing okay with my D810 for now but am keeping an eye open for the 2nd generation of Z bodies before too long.

I was thoroughly amazed by the shapes and hues in this rock. I spent some quality time with it, even talked to it as usual, and the sound of the river around it was sweet music indeed. The polarizer took the glare off of the scene and increased saturation.

Thank you for you warm and kind visits my friends in 2020. You are the best! 💖

It sure looks like gold in this amazing rock in the Hamma Hamma River on Hood Canal. This happens late in the season when the water is low and it becomes visable. I had a polarizer on to cut glare on the scene, but that is all.

Wishing everyone a great summer season. Thank you very much for your kind visits and comments. You are very much appreciated! 💙

Off the very scenic US-101 at a place called Hamma Hamma in Washington State. I think this is the Hood Bay, anyway had trouble getting to an area open enough to get this shot before nightfall, obviously I made it. Lost all the color a few minutes later. I had considered trying a long exposure here, but too late, I missed that opportunity. I was glad the two ducks swam off, I like their wake adding something to that area of the picture, got lucky.

This stop was after my pickup of paper rolls at Port Townsend earlier. Over all a very nice day.

Oh, I'd planned on going home next weekend, but looks like I'll be home for Christmas instead. This will be my first time home for Christmas since 2008. Guess I'll have to buy Christmas presents too, lol.

The Hamma Hamma River is a river on the Olympic Peninsula in the U.S. state of Washington. It rises near Mount Washington in the Olympic Mountains within the Olympic National Park and drains to Hood Canal and thence to the Pacific Ocean.

The name Hamma Hamma comes from a Twana village once located at the river's mouth and called Hab'hab, referring to a reed that grows along the river's banks.

There were signs that cougars have been seen around the area, so I stayed close to the car.

Back in Yakima WA tonight, which is only notable because I started here this morning with a delivery. Then went to Longview WA to pick up 7 large paper rolls and back to Yakima to deliver tomorrow at noon. Anyway, the good news is I have a few hours tonight and a few in the morning to spend on Flickr. I have such a backlog of pictures ready to post, but finding it difficult to decide what to post.

Going with this picture I took near the Hamma Hamma River in Washington. You may recall the picture I posted of the tidal flats, well this is another view further up the road and across. I loved the white house and at one point I noticed it's reflection, so I walked around until I found a spot with the best view of both. Still have a few more pics from that stop to post sometime in the future.

Enough yacking, time to post this and go see what you've all been posting.

Whilst exploring the Alfama district of Lisbon there were a number of great viewpoints over the tiled roofs including this one, the Miradouro Santa Luzia, which has a passing Cruise Ship in the background. This scene was slightly hazy but I think that makes it a bit more atmospheric.
