We all looked a lot younger then - BSA works rider Andy kits up before the day's racing. Andy tells me the tall gent standing beside him is the late Dave Joyce who was responsible for so many of the big meetings with the Newbury Club.

Saturday 5th August 2022 saw the Summer Fayre staged in the Public Gardens of Halstead Essex. This delightful market town in North East Essex boasts many fine buildings dating from the 14th to 19th Centuries.

The Empire Cinema at Halstead has always been a single tier theatre and now accommodates 280 patrons in very comfortable seats, including some double seats on the back row. There is a platform stage bounded by curtains, behind which the 1957 cinema proscenium survives.

In 1311 the Bouchier family became the most influential local lords and began a dynasty that was to have influence locally and nationally into the 16c.

Edward III on 2 April, 1341, granted licence for Robert Bourchier, chancellor of England, to found a college or chapelry of seculars in Halstead and to endow them with land and the advowson of the church of Sible Hedingham, the college was to consist of 8 chaplains in the parish church. This licence appears, however, never to have taken effect; and on 2 May, 1412, Henry IV granted licence for Richard, bishop of London, and others to found a chantry of 5 chaplains to celebrate divine service daily in the parish church of Halstead for the souls of Sir Robert Bourchier and Margaret his wife, Sir John Bourchier and Maud his wife, and Sir Bartholomew Bourchier and Margaret and Idonea his wives, and to grant to them lands and rent in Halstead, Sible Hedingham, Pebmarsh, Twinstead and Middleton, and the advowson of the church of Sible Hedingham, which they were to appropriate. One of the 5 chaplains was to be the master, and the chantry was to be called Bourchier's chantry.

Bishop William Grey ordered that, notwithstanding the ordinances of his predecessor, it should always be governed by a rector, who should find a chaplain to celebrate divine service for the said souls. In consequence of this the college never contained more than the master and 1 chaplain; and they appear to have presented to the church of Sible Hedingham in 1433 only.

Not sure if this building was originally built as a library - the roundel on the end shows a sheaf of corn.

The only surviving building from the original Colne Valley & Halstead Railway workshops complex is this wagon & tarpaulin repair shop, now a pharmacy.
