This comb was made with a small, one inch plastic comb, loose leaves from our collection, and model magic modeling clay to keep it nice and light. Then it was hand painted. Created by my roommate, Tea.

The Reflections Gifts Suite started at the Gulf Island Film and Television school on Galiano Island off of Vancouver Island about 2005. I took a class of students there for an intensive session with film. The key drawing was done at this time.

When hidden away in a rarely used drawer, it is easy to lose track of accumulated items that may (or may not!) have lost their value. When moving from one location to another throughout my childhood, I kept material goods to a minimum. However, having lived in the same place for the last 15 years, I need to make concerted efforts to sort and purge regularly - and, even then, it often falls to the lower priority list.
In much the same way, I find the need to re-evaluate other daily habits - assessing their value and usefulness - every so often. The conscious attention to 'what works and what doesn't work' is a natural part of the circular evaluative model. Sometimes the intuitive process is in conflict with (and loses out to) that of standardization. Black with red accents, this feather fascinator creates a very dramatic look. The metal hair comb has been wrapped in red ribbon onto which several black feathers have been attached. One large black millinery flower is the focal point of the piece, but several smaller black roses adorn the top of the comb. One bright red duck feather has been added for an accent.
