The first two tracks were recorded in the main cathedral of Frankfurt am Main during a mass in 1968. At that time, some priests in Frankfurt were reaching out to young people by inviting rock groups, etc. into the service. In my case it was a Catholic priest who had seen John Coltrane perform and was a big modern jazz fan. So he asked Just Music (JuMu) if we wanted to play at the Dom, which is the biggest church in Frankfurt — a huge hall. In still moments of the recording you can hear the priest’s voice celebrating the mass.
There was a Protestant minister also in Frankfurt who sympathized with JuMu’s music. In 1967 he had invited me to play church organ with JuMu violinist/clarinetist Witold Teplitz accompanying on drums, next to the altar. On instruments we had no experience or training on, we both played in a totally free manner. He called it atonal music. (Some time after, a teacher asked me if I still played this “atomic” (atomar) music — he meant atonal music, but I couldn't help laughing, convinced that he had created a more fitting term.) The minister who had invited us was named Dieter Schnebel. He shortly left the priesthood and became famous as a New Music composer. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieter_Schnebel
Tracks 3 and 5 were recorded at “Centrum Freier Cunst“ / Fuchshohl Studio. These performances occurred a year apart from each other; track 5 features Witold Teplitz playing his violin perched upright upon his knees – as seen in the JuMu TV performance: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHHT4OlaDns&feature=channel_page
Track 4 was made at a radio station as part of the series “Treffpunkt Jazz“ (Meeting Point Jazz). I still have the recorded talk with the two hosts, very important guys at that time (one was chief editor of the “Jazzpodium“). They said that they missed form and style in JuMu’s performance (“too free“), comparing us to groups in Stuttgart, the Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe and Frederic Rabold’s group. They had those qualities we were supposed to lack. These commentators really were missing the point: our 100% open improv WAS the form and WAS the style of each tune. A similar misunderstanding of JuMu happened again soon after, at a Duesseldorf concert curated by Sigfried Schmidt-Joos who also missed the point. Nowadays such blindness of the managing VIPs seems ridiculous. But in those days when the split between amateurs and professionals ruled their thinking some critics emanated an ice-cold anti-recognition.
In 1969 we were all young, around nineteen or twenty years old (Herrmann was the exception, at twenty-six). I don't recall any of us being interested in what was going on in the Pop world – it would have been below our horizon. Probably unconsciously, we all tried to look older. We affected beards; Witold smoked cigars and pipe.
The last two tracks were recorded in a Prague radio studio before a live audience, who listened with attentive concentration. After the concert they told us they'd all been deeply touched by our passion and seriousness. This was just after the so-called Prague Spring revolution in 1968, which had been put down harshly by the Soviets. For the audience, JuMu had somehow touched off a profound emotional recall of their political and human losses — a time when all hope seemed lost. (In 1983, I played in Prague again with "Cassiber", and the audience were similarly moved.)

Anglesey Barracks in Dinorwic Quarry, comprised two rows of 11 dwellings, served as accommodation for quarrymen, they would spend the week based in the barracks working in the quarry, leaving their homes very early on Monday morning and returning Saturday afternoon.
Conditions were spartan. Each two-room unit had a living area with a fireplace and a sleeping area for four men. Facilities were scant no running water, toilets or electricity.
Public-health inspectors closed down these barracks in 1948.
Backdrop is Snowdon the highest mountain in Wales, at an elevation of 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in the British Isles outside the Scottish Highlands. It is located in Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, and has been described as - probably the busiest mountain in Britain. It is designated as a national nature reserve for its rare flora and fauna.

La noche dota a la Mezquita Azul de una magia especial que todavía realza más su belleza. Me senté en un banco y planté el trípode con la cámara, cuando aún era de día —por supuesto, después de tomar un té—, dispuesto a ver cómo lentamente el cielo y los muros de la mezquita comenzaban a cambiar, mientras disfrutaba con las fotos que iba sacando. El sol se retiraba sin prisa, y los colores se transformaban con una delicadeza hipnótica. Poco a poco, empezaron a insinuarse suaves tonos dorados en los minaretes, al ir encendiéndose los focos que preparaban la escena.
Un rato después, el edificio entero resplandecía como un dibujo de luz dorada, recortado con nitidez sobre el cielo azul violáceo del anochecer.
De repente, algo cambió. Los focos dorados se apagaron sin aviso y fueron sustituidos por otros blancos, fríos, casi quirúrgicos. La mezquita se volvió entonces algo distinto: una visión extraña, fantasmal, como si flotara en una dimensión paralela.
No lo dudé un segundo y apreté rápido el disparador. Duró muy poco. Apenas unos segundos. Por suerte, algo más que los 30 segundos que duró la exposición de esta foto. Lo suficiente para atraparla, aunque fuera una sola vez.
Pensé entonces que quizá todo fuese una metáfora de esta ciudad que respira entre dos luces.

At night, the Blue Mosque takes on a special kind of magic that enhances its beauty even more. I sat on a bench and set up the tripod with my camera — it was still daylight, of course, and only after having a tea — ready to watch as the sky and the mosque's walls slowly began to change. I enjoyed every shot I took while the light shifted gently around me. The sun withdrew slowly, and the colors transformed with hypnotic delicacy. Bit by bit, soft golden tones began to appear on the minarets, as the lights that set the scene started to come on.
A little while later, the entire building shone like a sketch drawn in golden light, sharply outlined against the violet-blue sky of dusk.
Then suddenly, something changed. The golden lights went off without warning, replaced by others — white, cold, almost surgical. The mosque became something else entirely: a strange, ghostly vision, as if it were floating in a parallel dimension.
I didn’t hesitate — I pressed the shutter quickly. It lasted only a few seconds. Fortunately, just a bit longer than the 30 seconds the photo exposure required. Long enough to capture it, just once.
And I thought, maybe it was all a metaphor — of a city that breathes between two lights.

Il a une envergure de 48 à 61 cm et un poids de 121 à 144 gr. C'est le plus petit hibou du Québec. La petite nyctale est plus petite, mais c'est en fait une chouette.
En ce qui concerne son plumage, il peut avoir deux types, la forme grise et la forme brun roux.
En forme grise, les ronds de sa face sont blancs tachetés de gris et entourés d'une ligne noire. La forme rousse aura les teinte de gris remplacé par du roux. Ses yeux sont jaunes et son bec est gris vert avec des plumes légères à sa base.
Sa poitrine et son abdomen sont gris brun avec des rayures à la verticale de couleur grise. Ces parties sont aussi parsemées de lignes et de taches. Il porte un queue carrée.
Ses ailes et sa queue ont aussi des lignes et ses pattes sont courtes et recouvertes de plumes. En phase brun roux, il est semblable, mais la couleur canelle remplace la couleur grise.
Les deux sexes sont identiques, mais la femelle est plus grande. Il émet des gémissements lugubres et parfois de petits hululements.Si il se sent en danger, il s'étire, colle ses plumes contre son corps afin de ressembler le plus possible à l'écorce de l'arbre où il est perché.
Nidification : Il construit son nid dans une cavité d'arbre ou une autre cavité naturelle. Parfois, il va utiliser un nid abandonné comme celui abandonné par un pic.
Après l'accouplement, la femelle pond de 2 à 8 oeufs à raison de un aux deux jours. A la ponte du 3eme oeuf, la couvaison commence. Les deux parents vont couver les oeufs pendant 26 à 34 jours, soit jusqu'à l'éclosion du dernier oeuf. Les petits sont nourris par les deux parents. Le mâle apporte la nourriture et la femelle déchiquette la viande pour en donner des morceaux aux petits. Les petits peuvent voler après environ 35 jours.
Après un mois les jeunes quittent le nid et se dispersent à l'automne. La durée de vie, ou longévité, du Petit Duc Maculé est d'environ 14 ans.

Oiseaux typiques des lisières de forêt mais on les trouve aussi en rase campagne, notamment en hiver, sa nourriture est composée de graines de plantes herbacées de céréales, de baies et d'insectes.
Il est présent dans une grande majorité de l'Europe. Son aire de distribution s'étend des monts Cantabriques en Espagne jusqu'au lac Baïkal et aux sources de la Lena en Asie Centrale. En direction du nord, elle atteint le cercle polaire arctique en Scandinavie.
