Discussions on how to address maritime autonomous surface ships have begun at IMO. The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) is debating how to proceed with a regulatory scoping exercise, which is expected to touch on an extensive range of issues, including the human element, safety, security, interactions with ports, pilotage, responses to incidents and protection of the marine environment, for different levels of autonomy. Speaking at the opening of the 99th session of the MSC (16-25 May), IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim said, “It is important that we remain flexible to accommodate new technologies, and so improve the efficiency of shipping - while at the same time keeping in mind the role of the human element and the need to maintain safe navigation, further reducing the number of marine casualties and incidents.” Mr. Lim also announced the formation of an inter-divisional maritime autonomous surface ships taskforce, within the IMO Secretariat, to support the work on this important matter.
Other matters on the busy MSC agenda include considering how the Polar Code provisions might be applied in the future to non-SOLAS ships, including cargo ships of less than 500 gross tonnage, fishing vessels and pleasure yachts. New and amended ships' routeing measures set to be adopted include those in the Bering Sea and Bering Strait, aimed at reducing the risks of incidents. They will be the first measures to be adopted in IMO for the Arctic region since the Polar Code entered into force on 1 January 2017.
Matters related to the goal-based ship construction standards for bulkers and oil tankers are also on the agenda. The outcomes of Sub-Committees will be considered, including various guidelines set for approval. The MSC will be updated on the reported incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships. Amendments to the SOLAS convention are set to be adopted, alongside the latest set of amendments to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

i got a call today that i wasn't quite expecting yet. you see, i haven't spoken with my father in 10 years or more, and wasn't ever sure if i was going to again. for those who don't know my past, i didn't have the easiest childhood, but i'm not out looking for sympathy. the short but not sweet truth is i grew up with an alcoholic father, and my mother was strong enough at one point when i was reaching my teenage years to finally kick his ass out, and i haven't talked to him since. after growing up, i debated it, but the sad truth is that inside i was still a scared little boy, and could never bring myself to do it.
well, no more even thinking about that. he's dead, at 63. cancer they say, but, what really killed him is alcoholism. i'm not even sure how i feel. at first i felt i should cry, but couldn't, then i shed a tear, then... i just feel apathetic. it's such a bizarre feeling.
i'm left with these photos, captures of the innocence of youth, before his own father, also an alcoholic, corrupted his young mind forever, and left him a mess. i can only hope that i never follow that same road, and now that i wrote this sentence, yeah, i'm crying.
i'll never forget the first time i heard this song, and i literally had to pull off the road. it hit me so hard. i knew this day would come. sure, the words may not fit my life exactly, but... the emotions are the same.

Paul Tarsitano demonstrating how to use improvised leg splint at his excellent Wilderness First Aid Course. The splint is constructed from a pant-leg, webbing and sticks or hiking poles. The webbing is threaded through holes cut in the pant-leg fabric after the poles have been threaded through. The webbing goes around the poles and through the slits (but not under the leg), much like lacing shoe laces. You can ask someone to sacrifice a pant leg or you can carry one of these pre-made from light-weight material (quick-dry pants) in your first aid kit.
