They are the lawnmowers of Hawaii.

Found wandering aimlessly around my kitchen this evening.

Captured by Jodie, shot by me.

Here's the nightmare view.

The endemic Hawaiian Saddle Wrasses, feeding on eggs attached to a rock. Whose eggs? How did they get to have this free meal? Read about this cool piece of marine natural history here.

Take underwater pictures with me at the Evolution Photoganza in the Philippines in September 2013, and enjoy more of my photography & tales of the underwater world in "Sex, Drugs and Scuba Diving".

After walking through the lust areas of the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden you come to the beautiful ocean crashing into the rocks.

A Hawaiian rainbow shot from my last trip to Hawaii... Often those days when nobody wants to get out and shoot make in my opinion some of the best days to get out and shoot. I can't wait to get back to the Big Island soon on a bit more perminant basis...

Honeymoon in Hawaii

View from our hotel in Hawaii.

While swimming and floating in the ocean in Hawaii, my eyes caught this couple. They were so enchanted with each other that I couldn't take my eyes off of them. Normally I'm a bit shy when approaching people I don't know, but I knew I would regret not asking to take their picture. They laughed at my when I asked if they minded me photographing and then said that everyone in Hawaii already got pictures of their wedding the day previous, so it would be fine. I was so pleased with the image and for myself for temporarily overcoming my shyness.

I'm from Hawaii, so I couldn't resist.

Walking around the Sunday afternoon before the DNC in Denver, on 16th Street Mall. There was all kind of people there and tons of cops, some in riot gear and most of them with bulletproof vests on. It was a crazy zoo out there. I got bumped by a cop in riot gear and a bean bag shotgun. I think I got a photo of him.

Yes there is one microscopic naked person in this picture. :) No touch up to the colors, aren't they beautiful!

Taking the active just prior to our subjects for the day...

Hawaii Kai landscape

Took a Hawaiian culture tour this morning. John, the guide, talked about the petroglyphs, but not about the golf course. But I know more people come to Hawaii in the winter for golf than for petroglyphs.

This Hawaiian monk seal made its own flower crown for a seal-fie! These endangered seals haul out on beaches throughout Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary to rest and look generally fabulous. Make sure to give them plenty of space so they can enjoy their time on the beach! (Photo: NOAA)

Unique in the goose family, this Hawaiian endemic has deeply furrowed golden neck plumage and is largely terrestrial, spending little time on the water. After a close call with extinction, it remains as Hawaii's state bird. It is one of the most isolated, sedentary, and threatened of all water birds. Hunting, poaching and egg collecting took a heavy toll through the early 1900's. Despite tenacious re-introduction efforts beginning in the 1960's, the population still has not recuperated to a self sustaining condition.

This endangered species is threatened on all islands by loss of wetland habitat and by introduced mammalian predators. The 'Alae 'Ula is an endemic water bird (found naturally only in Hawaii) that is an endangered species with a total population perhaps in the hundreds.

According to Hawaiian legend, the gallinule brought fire from the volcano home of the gods to the Hawaiian people. During his flight, the gallinule’s formerly white forehead was burned red by the volcanos’ fire.
