Had a busy day yesterday, the only thing I wanted to do in the evening was watch TV.

A postally unused carte postale published by Nels.

On the back of the card they have printed:

'Bruges Carillon du Beffroi.

Le carillon date de 1748.

Il se compose de 47 cloches

pesant 55.166 livres.

La plus grosse pèse 11.589

livres, et la plus petite 12

livres".

Nels

Nels of Brussels, Belgium was a publishing house founded by Edward Nels in 1898. Their goal was to spread geographic knowledge while producing maps, guide books, and photographic and printed souvenirs.

They soon became the largest producer of postcards in Belgium, and they also published many cards of the Congo and of Luxembourg.

Though they produced a variety of card types, most were as collotypes, many of which were hand colored in a dull palette.

Ernest Thill, who had ben the manager of the firm took over from Nels in 1913 and added his name to the company.

In the 1960’s to 1975 they were purchased by a French firm, but they are now publishing postcards under their own name again, though for the most part the cards are now printed in Italy.

The Belfry at Bruges

The belfry, which is on the south side of the Grote Markt (Big Market Square), was built in the 13th. Century.

It houses a carillon of 47 bells which are rung by a full-time carilloneur who gives free concerts on a regular basis. (When you think about it, they'd have to be free, wouldn't they?)

La porte d' Ardon. Traitement HDR et colorisation.

This 1980 Madame Tussauds guide book has one of the most striking designs I've seen, along with plenty of photos showing what was on display at the time.

It doesn't happen often that you find yourself in the Acknowledgements of a new edition of a book that you taught you everything you needed to know 9 years ago.

The Five-storied Pagoda was originally built in 942 along with the Main Hall by military commander Taira no Kinmasa. Tokugawa Iemitsu rebuilt the pagoda in 1648 along with other structures including the Main Hall and Hozomon Gate.

The pagoda was declared a national treasure in 1911, but it was burned to the ground during the air raids of March 1945. After World War II, the temple buildings (including the Main Hall, Kaminarimon Gate and Hozomon Gate) were reconstructed and in 1973, the pagoda was also rebuilt, with additional facilities. Relics of the Buddha (busshari) are kept on the top floor.

Sensō-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, a Buddhist temple founded in 645 CE, dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon and formerly associated with the Tendai sect. Adjacent to the temple is the Shinto Nishinomiya Inari shrine. You can find a map of the temple and much more information on this site:

www.senso-ji.jp/guide/index_e.html

Dominating the entrance to the temple is the Kaminarimon or "Thunder Gate", featuring a massive paper lantern dramatically painted in vivid red-and-black tones to suggest thunderclouds and lightning. The gate, as usual, contains four sacred statues. Beyond the Kaminarimon is Nakamise-dori with its shops, followed by the Hōzōmon or "Treasure House Gate" which provides the entrance to the inner complex.

One building houses a washing place for purification. Within the precincts stand a stately five-story pagoda and the main hall, devoted to Kannon. Within the temple itself, and also at many places on its approach, there are o-mikuji stalls.

According to legend, a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida River in 628 by two fishermen, the Hinokuma brothers. Their village chief of their village, Hajino Nakamoto, recognized the sanctity of the statue, remodeling his own house into a small temple to Kannon.

About The Series: The focal press guides, usually but not always written by the indefatigable W. D. Emanuel are a treasure trove for collectors of cameras. Not for the sections on how to use individual cameras (which do, however contain a great deal of good sense) but for the descriptions of different models. They are the first source to go to if you want to know the difference between (for example) an Ensign Selfix 16/20 Model I and an Ensign Selfix Model II or how many elements the Trinar lens in your Regula camera has
