For my Mother on Mother's Day 2023.
I wish all mothers a happy day today. They often do not realise how much they are a guiding light in our lives, shaping our hopes and dreams from the earliest of days. Today is particularly poignant for my Mum. This is her first Mother's Day in 67 years that she has not shared with my late father. Hard to believe it has been six months already since he died. You are loved Mum.
Toucans are wonderful birds, sporting such lovely and large bills. This one is a Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) leaping up to get some bananas that the lodge regularly placed out for them. At the end of the trip a group of us when to Toucan Rescue Ranch which had such an educated (and pretty) guide who provided non-stop information as she led our tour of the facility. Although the name implies that its focus is on toucans, my impression was that sloths were its prime focus. We'll get to that in another post. I only mention it to encourage people to take the tour and support this, or one of the other rescue centers in San Jose. I recall her telling us about the toucan's bill. It's not strong, like a parrot, and cannot crack nuts (or the fingers of its handlers). Besides impressing humans, the chief function of the bill is regulation of body temperature. The bill is filled with blood vessels which are exposed to the ambient temperature over the large surface area of the bill. Most of the toucans at the facility were pets whose owners could no longer take care of them. Their presentation strongly discouraged toucans or other wildlife as pets, many of whom will outlive their humans and either perish or be taken by a refuge center. Common sense people!
well our guide seemed relaxed, he was more interested in texts than anything else... if only we knew if he was guiding the shadows to us or showing our way out... oh... it would be so much more comforting if the exit was up rather than down... was crystal city above us or below?

Male Piranga rubra
(Summer tanager / Piranga abejera)
The only completely red bird in North America, the strawberry-colored male Summer Tanager is an eye-catching sight against the green leaves of the forest canopy.
The mustard-yellow female is harder to spot, though both sexes have a very distinctive chuckling call note. Fairly common during the summer, these birds migrate as far as the middle of South America each winter.
The sun will guide you, especially if it is painted on the tree. You may not notice at first as I didn't notice. But it is there, just give it a second look. Sometimes it is all about the second look, and the light doesn't always come from the sun on the sky.
F.H. Richardson's bluebook of projection by Richardson, F. H. (Frank Herbert), 1866-1943.
New York : Quigley Publishing Company, 1942
Back in the day when projection was a craft and projectionists were highly skilled, licensed tradespeople, books like this one were the study guides and reference manuals of an industry, covering every last detail of the art and science of projection. Municipalities and unions required projectionists not only know how to operate and maintain projectors and safely handle the flammable nitrate film from that era, but also understand electrical, electronic, mechanical and optical theory and the myriad differences among various components, including light sources, sound equipment, power supplies, et cetera.
If I recall correctly, this fairly well-used copy was an eBay find from over two decades ago.
'Feed me, please! No one is watching us.' Asked me quietly the male bird.
'No way!' My answer, unfortunately.

Darwin's finches (also known as the Galápagos finches) are a group of about 15 species of passerine birds. They are well known for their remarkable diversity in beak form and function. They are often classified as the subfamily Geospizinae or tribe Geospizini. They belong to the tanager family and are not closely related to the true finches. The closest known relative of the Galápagos finches is the South American Tiaris obscurus. They were first collected by Charles Darwin on the Galápagos Islands during the second voyage of the Beagle. Apart from the Cocos finch, which is from Cocos Island, the others are found only on the Galápagos Islands.
The birds vary in size from 10 to 20 cm and weigh between 8 and 38 grams. The smallest are the warbler-finches and the largest is the vegetarian finch. The most important differences between species are in the size and shape of their beaks, which are highly adapted to different food sources. The birds are all dull-coloured.

If I held out my hand for you and told you that I needed help. Would you take it? If I told you that I felt lost and alone in the bleak darkness. Would you guide me back to the light? If I told you that I was ever so close to the edge. Would you tighten your grasp to keep me safe? If I told you that my strength was depleted. Would you help keep me steady? If I told you that my will was all but gone. Would remind me of why I should continue to fight?
