UPDATE: New Government has announced the re-opening of Kits Base.
Early one morning, not long after the ice was gone, we were out walking around the lake. I was drawn to the golden color of the sun in the dried up leaves, still on the bushes, and how it contrasted with the rest of the scene.
An unexpected text got me on the go shortly after 6 am on the 23rd! I needed to get someone downtown by 7 am. Being so close to the bird sanctuary I just had to go visit.
There were many Wood ducks present and I was able to see my first goslings of the year!
This was a wonderful way to start the day!
Thanks for your visits and comments! They are all greatly appreciated!

Due to budget cuts, that ex 'Hawkeye' AEW APS-125 radar dish modification on the C-130H Hercules, never made it in to production as the USCG terminated the program but here the USAF were evaluating the system which eventually passed onto the US Navy at Patuxent River for the Grumman Hawkeye 2000 program evaluation.

A lone guard in front of the huge picture of Mao at Tiananmen.
I like how the straight lines complement the guard's posture.
This is the fourth photo of him I have uploaded. The others are here, here and here.
What a odd job to stand there for hours at a time. Just like the guards at Buckingham Palace.

The Guàrdia Urbana (English: Urban Guard) is the municipal police force for the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
Originally it was formed in November 1843 as the "Municipal Guard". Although in 1907 it became the "Urban Guard".
Originally their police officers were armed with a sabre, pistol, and a rifle. Following Tragic Week events in 1909 the force was demilitarized, and officers are now armed with sidearms for personal defence.
During the early 20th century the force based their uniform types around that of the British Police uniform. The emergency contact number is 092.

Considering the "pick-pocket" problem these guys were a reassuring site.
The modern city of Alba Iulia is located near the site of the important Dacian political, economic and social center of Apulon, which was mentioned by the ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy. After Dacia became a province of the Roman Empire, the capital of Dacia Apulensis was established here, and the city was known as Apulum. Apulum was the largest city in Roman Dacia and was the seat of the XIII Gemina Legion. Apulum is the largest castrum located in Romania, occupying 37.5 hectares (93 acres) (750 x 500 m2). The early Slavic name of the settlement was Bălgrad (meaning "white castle" or "white town"). The "white city" name was Latinized into Alba Julia. Between 1541 - 1690 it was the capital of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom and the Principality of Transylvania. Alba Iulia is historically important for Hungarians, Romanians and Transylvanian Saxons. The change of guard, troops from the city's Austrian Empire's infantry, cavalry and artillery divisions in their traditional military costumes, happens every day at 12 pm. It takes place nearby the 3rd and 4th Citadel Gates, two of the largest and most imposing of the citadel's seven gates and is attended by a large crowd.

A polar bear was active on the town beach and started to swim toward the Cape Merry National Historic Site. These guys are on standby in case it comes closer.
As if the lock itself wasn't enough to discourage opening the rusty fence of the old rock quarry, a guard wasp was posted as well...
Stand down photo 1944 of home guard does anyone know who they are? Could be Cornwall due to light infantry bugle on cap badges, picture badges on upper arms. After late 1942 proficiency badge and bar on lower arm.

Conservation status: Critically Endangered. It is one of the rarest big cats in the world with an estimate of somewhere between 30-60 solitary individuals left in the wild. The San Diego Zoo has established an Amur leopard breeding program and is working with other zoos to develop a sustainable and genetically diverse population of Amur leopards.
