The term "gross national happiness" was coined in 1972 by Bhutan's former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who has opened Bhutan to the age of modernization.
He used the phrase to signal his commitment to building an economy that would serve Bhutan's unique culture based on Buddhist spiritual values.
The concept was taken seriously, as the Centre for Bhutan Studies, under the leadership of Karma Ura, developed a sophisticated survey instrument to measure the population's general level of well-being.
The Canadian health epidemiologist Michael Pennock had a major role in the design of the instrument, and uses a "de-Bhutanized" version of the survey in his work in Victoria, British Columbia. Ura and Pennock have also collaborated on the development of policy screening tools which can be used to examine the potential impacts of projects or programs on GNH.[1]
Like many psychological and social indicators, GNH is somewhat easier to state than to define with mathematical precision.
Nonetheless, it serves as a unifying vision for Bhutan's five-year planning process and all the derived planning documents that guide the economic and development plans of the country.
Proposed policies in Bhutan must pass a GNH review based on a GNH impact statement that is similar in nature to the Environmental Impact Statement required for development in the U.S.
The Bhutanese grounding in Buddhist ideals suggests that beneficial development of human society takes place when material and spiritual development occur side by side to complement and reinforce each other. ( Wikipedia)

38/52 - Self portrait challenge
I was sent nursing when i left school as it was considered a 'solid' and grounding job. I'm sure my parents felt it would keep me focused on real life issues and less on being a dreamer. I would also be earning a salary which was an extra bonus.
The first few years were very hard for me. I found nursing difficult and uncompromising. No place for a dreamer, like me. As i was always competitive i completed my studies. I qualified as a general Registered Nurse and also added Midwifery to the mix. I have always believed that if you are going to do something, then do it well.
I chose to specialize in critical care and moved to Johannesburg in mid 1986. Here i joined the Johannesburg General hospital were i studied the Intensive Care nursing Sciences.
Although the Surgical and Trauma ICU's are hard work they were very rewarding. I loved the technology together with the patient care. I preferred the ICU to the wards. I don't do too well when people complain the whole time.
When i moved back to Windhoek some years later i opened the first ever ICU at the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek ( 1993 image below).
I only stayed on a short time, but enough to grow it into a three bed ICU. Today the ICU at the RC Hospital is very big and state of the art (can see a bit from the image above).
I moved into a medical sales field. It is far more lucrative and the hours are better. In the past few years i have missed the feeling of satisfaction that the ICU brought me. Everything else feels superficial. We will see. I have remained registered in the event i may choose to go back. Who knows?

The Admiral Von Tromp was a fishing vessel which was wrecked after grounding in thick fog and an easterly wind at Saltwick Bay, near Whitby, on 30th Sept 1976.
First weekend back in the air following a temporary grounding and maintenance. The weather gods behaved on this day allowing the Lancaster crew to perform some superb flypasts at Old Warden.

World War I training trenches, dug into Northchurch Common by the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps. Hard to imagine the leafy slopes of the Chilterns providing a realistic grounding for the Western front. Indeed by 1918, nearly half of all trainees had become war casualties.
I took this photo last year [I uploaded it here: www.flickr.com/photos/crutchleyrhodes/35460784825/in/albu... ] and was reasonably happy with it. I entered it into a camera club competition and whilst the judge liked its simplicity he did say that the creases in the material in the background were a bit distracting. I also added it to a photography Facebook page asking for feedback and they offered a few tips. As a result, I've re-edited it, taken out the numbers printed on the base of the bottle (a miniature gin bottle!), created a reflection underneath to make it look as though it is standing on a surface and therefore 'grounding' it so it's not appearing to float in mid-air, added a couple of subtle textures and a feint vignette. I do feel it has improved the image somewhat.
It is so very important to remember to 'ground' and 'protect' yourself from negative energies. One should do this daily. I have forgotten to do this recently and was reminded yesterday, about its importance. Grounding is the earthing of your energy to the natural energy field of the earth.

Not the hostile, hot, dry environment you'd imagine. Yes, it's all of those things but there's something remarkably grounding about walking up a (surprisingly firm) dune in your bare feet and just looking.
Quite a telling picture this one! The "Cause and Effect" as I can relate it to. The cause (airline) of Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 ET-AVJ crash couple of weeks ago resulting in the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet worldwide (effect). Moreover, the Ethiopian 737 was a rare surprise this morning at Chennai International Airport.

Was working outdoors over the weekend when suddenly the sky began to darken. I looked up to see the first wave of storm clouds rolling in advance of a cold front. When things like this happen during my down time, I react immediately. Work is halted and I'm off with the camera as fast as legs can carry me. I've learned over the years that the time to jump is at the first notice of stormy skies. Often the initial wave offers the most diversity in terms of texture and more chance of the darkness being broken with areas of bright sky. It's this tapestry of dark and light that translates into amazing photographic sky tones. As the rain move closer, the clouds have a tendency to flatten out in terms of contrast and depth. There is overcast but without much texture. Not only that, but there's a wonderful sense of energy and even urgency in the initial phase...both in terms of the atmosphere, but more importantly how it makes me feel. No two storms are exactly the same, and I appreciate each one of them in some unique fashion. But the common denominator is the rush I feel standing out in the open as the storm is unleashed over my head. This evening was no exception. The mild temperatures of the day were mixed with intermittent cold blasts as heavy winds buffeted the cemetery. The wind, the sound of the wind, and the clouds roiling overhead make me feel so alive, and fill me with energy. At times I stopped shooting and simply stood atop the central knoll like a human weathervane, turning to face the wind and take in the sights. I feel a real oneness with the environment at times like this. No one in their right mind would want to be here now, yet it feels perfect natural to me. In fact my presence seems somehow necessary. I was here for photography but I never let that overshadow the experience. I actually think the photos benefit from this state of mental connection. Some of my most spontaneous work arises in these moments. And I'm left with vivid memories that never leave me.
Departing over Liberty Station/Point Loma. Liberty Station is great for catching departures and rare reverse ops landings at SAN. This jet was painted in special colors when it first joined the JAL fleet, but was repainted during the 787 grounding in Spring 2013.
The first in a series of three showing a combined total of 46 Boeing 737 Maxes in storage due to the type's grounding. Such is Boeing's need for parking space that the Icelandair and TUI aircraft occupy what was previously an employee car park.
