The maples decided to kick off fall season, leaving red leaves on the ground.

The Groundhog, or Woodchuck, or Mouse Bear, or Whistle-pig (Marmota monax) is a master of the ground. Their burrows usually range somewhere between 10 feet and 60 feet in length, and they use them for protection and winter slumber. Hibernation is a wild thing. Imagine if you tucked yourself into an icy cold bed for 150 days of rest, during which time your heart rate would drop to five beats per minute. Your body temperature would drop to the upper 30s, and, if you were a groundhog, you'd be just fine. As a human, though, these things don't fly. We suffer mild hypothermia if our temperature drops a mere three degrees!

Soon all this will be a mass of white.

These levers change signals and points and are situated in the closed railway station at Coonabarabran in New South Wales. As they sit on the ground and are out in the open, not a signal box, they are known as a Ground Frame.

The Common Ground-Dove is one of the smallest doves in North America and is among the smallest in the family. Its scientific name speaks of its size. The genus name Columbina is the Latin diminutive of columba and means “little dove,” and the species name is Latin for “sparrow,” again a reference to small size (Terres 1980b).

On the last shots I uploaded, I mentioned that aerial shots taken with a kite have a tendency to flatten out the terrain. To show you exactly what I meant, I've uploaded these three shots taken of the same scene from ground level. The Argo hasn't moved in any of them.

Just look at that beautiful cloudless blue sky! There was no polarizing filter ... or any other kind ... on the lens. That was the actual color! The blue is so intense, you might not even notice the kite that is visible in two of these shots. :-)

I know some people don't like winter and snow, but I think everyone would agree that in pristine surroundings such as this ... on a day like this one was ... winter (well, yes, I know it's actually springtime) is as beautiful as any other season of the year.

Jitters in the wind,

Slithers in the grass,

Tremours in the ground

And shadows that pass...

I conclude from the long tail that this Arizona find is a Round-tailed Ground Squirrel, a species whose young are particularly cute. This looks much like a Richardson's Ground Squirrel except this one's tail is considerably longer.

Waiting for the sunset I had time to kill,

I just lowered the camera to the ground and shot few ones,

and you thought I was on my belly:-)))

But not on it for obvious reasons, low angles shots at night are cool but sitting in the filth by the 55 Track at Watson Yard not cool, as anything that touches on ground here other than shoes or boots would be contaminated for years. Here BNSF 3752 and company hang out for the night as they wait to take the outbound WATBAR to Barstow in the afternoon the next day.

The city of Vienna is full of life. Plenty of wild animals live there and in this trip, I managed to discover them all. I was really lucky to see Roe Deer roaming free in the Central Cemetery of Vienna (one of the biggest ones in Europe), as well as wild hamsters and ground squirrels (also known as Ziesel). Both are endangered species that we must protect! Hope you enjoy the images I brought from this particular destination.

Exploring the World's largest ship graveyard in Angola. We counted more than 50 big ships degrading in various states. Lots of history being buried here, one of the ships even originated from my tiny country of Estonia (from communist Soviet era) to end up in Africa.
