Powerscourt House and Gardens, Wicklow, Ireland grotto on a very foggy morning.

The Blue Grotto (Maltese: That il-Hnejja) is a number of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, west of the Wied iz-Żurrieq harbor near the village of Żurrieq. It is located right across the small uninhabited islet of Filfla.

Every day from sunrise until about 1 pm a unique sight can be observed here. The location of the cave combined with the sunlight lead to the water mirroring showing numerous shades of blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora; other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue.

The Blue Grotto is a popular destination for tourists on the island of Malta. It was also used for a scene of the 2004 film Troy, starring Brad Pitt.

A cascade we passed on our hike up to Grotto Falls. On the hike back to the car, we had a black bear run across the trail about 30ft in front of us. Quit a rush. How to get to Grotto Fails from the NPS site: From the parkway in Gatlinburg, turn at traffic light #8 and follow Historic Nature Trail into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Take Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail to stop #5 where there is a large parking area. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a narrow, winding, one-way road that is closed in winter. Buses, RVs, and large trucks are prohibited on the road.

The gardens were created in the late 19th century and lay buried for many years before being rediscovered in 2000, since when they've been largely restored.

"Explore the mythic cave-like Mineral Pool, the cascading two-story waterwall and palatial waterfall. Refresh yourself under the invigorating cool-splash cascade, release tension in the whirlpool or simply curl up grotto-side with a book."

It was lovely...

The Grotto is a nice half-way oasis on the Seven Hollows Trail at Petit Jean State Park.

This trail is about 4.5 miles in length and forms a loop so you don't have to backtrack. Hiking during the wet season is the best time to experience nice streams along the way, as well as a nice waterfall at the grotto. I've hiked this trail several hundred times over the past 30+ years.

Yungang Grottoes - Datong

At the museum

The Yungang Grottoes, (Wuzhoushan Grottoes in ancient time) are ancient Chinese Buddhist temple grottoes near the city of Datong in the province of Shanxi. They are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao.

The site is located about 16 km west of the city of Datong, in the valley of the Shi Li river at the base of the Wuzhou Shan mountains. They are an outstanding example of the Chinese stone carvings from the 5th and 6th centuries. All together, the site is composed of 252 grottoes with more than 51,000 Buddha statues and statuettes.

In 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Yungang Grottoes are considered by UNESCO to be a "masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art... [and] ...represent the successful fusion of Buddhist religious symbolic art from south and central Asia with Chinese cultural traditions, starting in the 5th century CE under Imperial auspices." It is classified as a AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration.

Datong Yungang Grottoes

The three main sites in China that are famous for their stone sculpture are Gansu Province Dunhuang, Luoyang Longmen and Datong Yungang. Among these, the Yungang grottoes are considered the first among equals, for their tremendous size, their ancient history and their relatively complete state of presenvation. In 1961, the State Council of China declared this a National Key Cultural Relics Protected Unit and in 2001 the stie was listed as a World Cultual Heritage Site.

With their 252 caves and 51,000 status, the Yungang cave art represent the successful fusion of Buddhist religious symbolic art from south and central Asian with Chinese cultural traditions, starting in the 5th century CE under Imperial auspices. The power and endurance of Buddhist belief in China are vividly illustrated by the Yungang gottoes.

The caves can be divided into 3 phases: cave 20 is one of the five earliest caves of monk Tan Yao, house of the sitting statue of Sakyamuni, which is 13.7 meters high, with a full and round face, majestic smile, slim up and a high nose, ears that extend almost to the shoulders, radiant eyes, and broad shoulders. It is the representative of the Buddha sculptures of the Yungang Grottoes.

This rugged canyon in Mojave National Preserve, California is known by a few names. The most widely used currently is Hole-in-the-Wall. It is located in volcanic rocks near the Woods Mountains.

According to the National Park Service, Bob Holliman, a rancher who lived in the Mojave from the early 1900s until his death in 1953, named the site after the natural geological formation located in the Big Horn Mountains of northern Wyoming. The Wyoming site was famous as a retreat for outlaws in the 1800s, including Butch Cassidy’s gang. Holliman had spent some time at Hole in the Wall in Wyoming and that he thought the volcanic mesas in the Preserve are similar to the Wyoming site. (Though in Wyoming the rocks are red in color and sedimentary and here they are black and volcanic). The name stuck. Holliman was gunslinger turned homesteader but, according to the NPS, had no ties to Butch Cassidy or the Sundance kid despite stories that have been spun in "Mojave Lore".

Early settlers had other very descriptive names for the small canyon. The desert wind would blow hard up through the rocky gap and "howl like a banshee". That gave rise to the name Banshee canyon. Whoever has heard the wind wail though these desert canyon can readily identify with that name. The rocks in the canyon have holes, coves; and arches which gave rise to another name used by early visitors, Grotto Canyon. When you visit this beautiful place you will agree that all the names fit.

Judas's bag of gold...whoops....bag of silver! Thanks for the tip! Details are important.

Underneath a Moorish complex in Spain, I found this strange pool between the foundation pillars, with a rock grotto at the other end.

Grotto Bridge is dated 1757 and is part of the Craigiehall Estate (used presently as Scottish Army HQ) and is upriver from the Cramond Brig, perhaps a 10-15 minute walk or you could park in Cammo Road and walk down. See the map location to make sense of this. You can walk further up the river over the bridge and it will take you to Turnhouse the old Edinburgh Airport with a nice view down the railway to the Forth Bridge and lots of planes to watch or photograph. I chose a Single RAW file ran through Photomatix to enhance the image - I know people will have mixed views on 'altering' photographs as I once did myself. But our eyes see a much wider range of light than a single shot can take... you could do a set of the same photographs with different settings and combine them (bracketing feature on most DSLR's). Or change using Lightroom, I've only used Photomatix to date and am happy with the results. Once I have more time I will try Lightroom too...

Thanks for looking and your positive comments.

Ocean swells enter The Grotto near the golf course on the northeast side of Christmas Island, Australia. The swimming here is good.

Once I got to the falls I set up in several different locations to see what I liked best. This meant climbing over rocks and setting my tripod up in the stream. Good thing there weren't too many people there yet.

Through to the house.
