The Cathedral has a rich history of links with royalty. Winchester was the capital of Anglo-Saxon Wessex, and Old Minster the burial place of its West Saxon kings. When William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066, he was quick to stamp Norman power on the city by building the magnificent Cathedral we see today.

One of seven sculptures in the orchard at Häringe Castle. Supposedly one of the Norse gods, but I like to call him Mr.Grotesque.

According to a man in Winchcombe church, these are not gargoyles they are 'grotesques'...
A true gargolye is part of the gutting & has a water spout for a mouth...
So know you know...
Commentary.
Massive geological landslip,
14 miles long and 2-3 miles wide.
Grotesque, fantastic, statuesque, monolithic,
eroded, weathered spires and pillars of rock.
Scenes here are often used in Sci-fi and Fantasy films
as images of “other worlds.”
This place is surreal, unreal, mysterious, ethereal
and spectacularly awesome.
Loch Leathan, one of the largest fresh-water
lochs on any of the U.K’s offshore islands,
reflects a broken-cloud sky.
The Storr and “Old Man” stand as precipitous,
stark silhouettes on the atmospheric horizon.
Is this it? No, no, no. Far from it.
The fantasy of the Quiraing,
a few miles north,
is yet to challenge our grasp on reality,
in this amazing, astounding landscape.
Creo que la grotesca imagen se da a entender perfectamente.
I think the grotesque image is perfectly understood.
The tradition indicates the two characters with candles in hand, at the bottom left as portraits of Raphael and Pinturicchio
Pinturicchio (1452-1512) Pius II canonized Saint Catherine of Siena (1503-1508) Libreria Piccolomini - Siena Cathedral
The Piccolomini Library was painted by the Perugian painter Pinturicchio (Bernardino di Betto 1452-1513) and coworkers, including Amico Aspertini and the young Raffaello Sanzio, in 1502 for his patron, the cardinal of Siena, who wished to honour his uncle Pope Pius II who died in 1464. (The unfortunate cardinal Francesco eventually got promoted to the Papacy and died 10 days later!) Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini was one of the greatest humanist scholars and the library in Siena was built to house his precious collection of illuminated manuscripts. The frescoes in the large lunettes that line the walls tell the story of the Pope’s life, while the surrounding decorative elements and ceiling are in the “grotesque” style that imitates ancient Roman examples that were very popular with artists and humanists at the time.
I shot this building in the past, but was not happy with the way i produced the photos. I wanted to do a revisit, this time shooting it with my ND110 filter on the lens (which i grow to love more and more). Not sure whether to replicate my "Arrowhead" shot again.... I did a few attempts only to find out when i was developing the photos the composition was by far not the same. Anyway, i tried a few other angles and was satisfied with this shot. I had to wait for the clouds to break, but it was worth the effort. Not a single drop of rain ;-).
I don't mind visiting a building for the second or for that matter even the third time. A well designed building is like a good book. You want to read it over and over again, and that is also the case with the Cope.
Look closely and you'll see a number of gurning grotesque faces here, on the south transept of All Saints church, Oakham, Rutland.
Certaldo, in Tuscany, is a beautiful medieval village in Tuscany. Also, the place where Giovanni Boccaccio lived at the end of his life.
Gorgeous streets, great food.
Near Palazzo Pretorio was a shed with some heads on display. I could not find much information about their provenance, however, they seem to be seen as protectors of the village in other places.

Webster's New World Dictionary defines "grotesque" as a style of decorative art characterized by fanciful or fantastic human and animal forms often interwoven with foliage or similar figures that may distort the natural into absurdity, ugliness, or caricature.
