finding them ugly and grotesque but I find them interesting not only in their looks but their behaviour too....they are truly amazing~ watching out for one another, keeping the planet clean and how they are very silent with only occasional grunts,...they find their food by their ability to smell which makes it difficult to get a good shot because unless I can follow them downwind they always know I'm there before I can get a shot...very clever.
All action takes place, so to speak, in a kind of twilight, which like a fog or moonlight, often tends to make things seem grotesque and larger than they really are.

Public Sculpture and Fountains
You can always guarantee when you visit a city for the first time, there will always be plenty of public works. I like to seek them out, where ever possible. I’m amazed at the quantity, the scale, the quality and sometimes, just the sheer irresponsibility of corporate bodies in their quest to spend our money. How did the 10cc put it? “Art for Arts’ sake”. However, mostly I like what I see, hope you do too.
This latest selection comes from London (4) and Florence (2), I think.

Niki de Saint Phalle's monumental "Black Nana" (1968/69) dominates one of the floors of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. It is a disturbing sculpture because it minimises what makes us human and maximises one of the aspects we share with the animal world, sexuality. Perhaps more disturbing is that we are in fact part of the animal world. However, we have always known this. It does not really come as a surprise. Think of the prehistoric "Venus of Villendorf" for example or of the appearance of human-animal hybrids in the art of almost all cultures from the beginning. Grotesque is not this sculpture, I could say, but it is us who are grotesque by construction. Fuji X-Pro1.

"Abstract in black and white"
Abstract not a strong point for me but here goes -- thought about this for a while as we are in lockdown and things are a bit limited , First thought take a shot of a bottle of beer and give it a swirl in processing - but that was a similar approach that I took to a previous SSC abstract task . So stand outside the back door , point the camera up randomly and snap a shot of our Contorted Hazel tree . This stands around about 7 or 8 feet high now and getting quite a spread , so what you see is a very small section . I know the result looks like it is just lying down and taken in a studio , but this is indeed a top part of the tree and all the plain white/pale gray is actually the sky !!
And so this is my abstract for SSC and it is pretty much SOOC other than a crop and a tweak for exposure and contrast - I did not convert to mono having set the camera to B&W in the first place !!
The Corkscrew hazel tree is an attractive small tree or large shrub with heart shaped yellow foliage that appears in spring, turning green throughout the summer before buttery-yellow again in the autumn. This twisted hazel is most popular for its contorted branches that twist and corkscrew in spirals providing year round interest but particularly in winter when the leaves do not disguise the interesting form. Long yellow catkins on bare branches, from winter to spring, make a pretty feature and the stems are often used in flower arranging.
Corylus avellana 'Contorta' is a small tree or large shrub that will grow to 4 x 4 metres in 20 years and eventually form a rounded shape. This twisted hazel tree do well in any soil type (with a preference for chalky soil) that is moist but well-drained in partial shade or full sun. Exposure is well tolerated by this small, eventually rounded, ornamental tree.

For a sight and sound I have chosen a Rush track solely based on one line from the lyrics - and also because it is one of my favourite Rush pieces and of course Neil was on top form with this one !!
The most famous of 40 grotesques on St Peter's Church in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, is this figure of a grimacing man with a squat hat. This caricature of a locally important person is said to be the model for the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland story. About half depict demonic creatures, and the remainder appear to be caricatures of civic figures and Abbey officials. They are grotesques; gargoyles have water spouts passing through them.

One of the figures belonging to Germaine Richier's sculpture scenario called "The Great Game of Chess" (1959/61), Kunsthalle Hamburg. The assemblage forms part of an exhibition about hybrid creatures. It is clearly an artistic creation, but the sculpture also raises the question of who we are as creatures and whether our conventional self-image as rational and predictable beings separate from animals holds the water. The Cathedral has a rich history of links with royalty. Winchester was the capital of Anglo-Saxon Wessex, and Old Minster the burial place of its West Saxon kings. When William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066, he was quick to stamp Norman power on the city by building the magnificent Cathedral we see today.
One of seven sculptures in the orchard at Häringe Castle. Supposedly one of the Norse gods, but I like to call him Mr.Grotesque.
