A graphic outlines the specific fuel needs of planes, cars, trains, trucks and ships, and offers predictions.
Each form of transportation has its specific fuel needs. Much is still to be settled, but here are some of the dominant solutions to get us going green. One of the main contenders for planes in the long term is synthetic fuel, made from green hydrogen and carbon sucked out of the air. For cars, batteries allow electric models to plug into existing infrastructure. In ships, ammonia is a hydrogen-dense fuel that is relatively easy to keep a liquid, making it easier to transport. Fuel cells are a lighter proposition than batteries for long-haul semi-trucks, and are faster to refuel. Some trains are already electrified through rails or wires, but even diesel models can be made electric relatively easily.

From the toxic waste created by the extreme extraction of tar sands destroying indigenous communities in Canada, to toxins created by the BP Whiting refinery producing sacrifice communities in the Greater Chicago area, to the resultant catastrophic effect on our climate, the urgent need for a just transition away from fossil fuels to a 100% renewable energy economy is abundantly clear.
