I was almost home from my morning walk. The sky was darkening and I could smell rain. Only one brilliant sunbeam remained. And, as if in some grand stage production, it was focused directly on this shiny, bumpy-skinned, green baby!

I was afraid he would dart as Anoles usually do. But he seemed as intent on getting that last bit of sunlight as I was on getting this shot! So we both stood still, endlessly it seemed... 10 shots, 12, 15. He stared at me the whole time with his shiny black-striped, unblinking eye.

Just as I felt I'd had enough, he'd had enough too. And disappeared so quickly I couldn't see him leave as I rushed to reach my front gate before a drenching tropical downpour.

A European Green Lizard seen in scrub just prior to the Grand dolmen de Ferrussac on the Larzac. The blue head shows that it is a male. Normally they are hot to run at the slightest half crack of grass; with the cooler Easter air making them much easier to photograph. I have a photo from this series with the same male holding the upper tail of a female... She was about the same size but with a more modest attire. Maybe he was exhausted without sun and didn't want to let go as he returned to heat. She got away as he turned his head to my view and this was the shot that best filled the frame.

A once in a lifetime moment. I was taking a picture of shadow of this Anole through a sunlit leaf when he suddenly poked his head out and looked at me! Wow! And I got it.

Lacerta bilineata, male.

I've just come back from holiday in France, the weather was wet and windy a lot of the time so unfortunately I didn't get as many shots as usual. This lizard was happy to pose for a while.

Canyonlands National Park, Utah. The lizard appears to have lost a part of its tail which has regrown nicely. Scanned from two color slides.

I wish you a pleasant new week.

Lluert occidental - Western green lizard

This female green lizard (Lacerta viridis) was in nearly the same spot in the morning and evening.

Diese weibliche Smaragdeidechse (Lacerta viridis) war an beinahe demselben Ort am Morgen und am Abend.

Colour of lizard varies from brown to green and can be changed like many other kinds of lizards, but anoles are closely related to iguanas and are not true chameleons.

Females lay single eggs every 2 weeks. The eggs hatch every 5 to 7 weeks. The eggs look like Leathery versions of chicken eggs.

There are three species of 'Green Lizard' in Europe - Lacerta bilineata, Lacerta viridis and Lacerta trilineata. The males of viridis often develop blue heads in the breeding season, those of trilineata males tend to stay green/yellow, and bilineata are somewhere in the middle, like this one, with a suffusion of blue along with a yellow throat. For about a month there was a little Anole lizard who would show up on our patio. He would always scurry away to safety every time he saw me even though I kept my distance.

On this particular day I spotted him on the brick wall so I hurried for my camera, hoping to grab a shot before he disappeared.

Well, he slithered in among the shadows and leaves of some flowers and froze - most likely thinking he was well hidden. So not to upset him too much I just grabbed a few quick shots before going back inside.
