Close-up of part of the graphics card for my old, derelict computer (replaced about four years ago but for some reason, I keep around). Since it's not used, I don't mind the dust.

The GT 730 is a low profile (half-height) card. It comes installed with a VGA extender and a full-height bracket. I could install the VGA port in another slot, but I don't need it so I'll remove it.

Guts of the new machine:
It's a Q9650 w 8G memory and a whole bunch of disks with new bits:
An ASUS Xonar Essence STX Hi-Fi Sound Card (ahhhh the sound of silence - no more motherboard noise)
A Gigabyte nVidia GTX460 1G OC Video card (so I can run CUDA video apps)
An Antec 750W power supply to run it all.
And, after a couple of false starts, it works!
our holiday gifts for each other arrived today (woo ups courier!) and we dediced to save wrapping time by having an early exchange

This used to be in my htpc, but I "had" to replace it with a 8800GTS... The 6600 was nice and silent though.
So I was upgrading from my old GeForce 3 Card I had in my first PC (Windows based that is). I go over to Best Buy and get ripped off. How? Here's the story.
So I come home after purchasing a, yes, $430.00 graphics card. I open the box in front of my family, because I am really excited. After opening the shrink-wrapped package, I pick up the card and notice something very strange. It doesn't look new. It doesn't feel new. And it sure doesn't smell new! It turns out some nice guy/lady (probably guy) swapped this brand spankin new card for a old card. In fact, this card is so old I don't know where the hell they got it from. So I try to return the card and do you think Best Buy would ever help me. Not really! They could not accept the product and I was told to contact their corporate number. No luck there either.
Thankfully, I purchased the card with my debit card backed with Visa logo. My bank went out of their way on two occasions. 1st, they immediately reimbursed me the money (so they are in debt). 2nd, they pay 120 some odd dollars to file a claim with Visa to fight against Best Buy and get the $430.00 back. In the end, the bank wins and Best Buy loses. Amazingly, the bank is still in debt the $120 so dollars. How nice they were!
So if ever in doubt, open the package in front of the security guy at the entrance. I have heard some funny stories about people purchasing a computer and upon opening the box, find it is filled with rocks. Be careful out there.

No photoshop, just old school modding. Started as a XFX R9 290XDD. Swapped the stock 88mm fans for msi torx 100mm fans. After removing the chrome bezzle and sanding for clearance I soldered in the fan and light connections as the MSI plugs were a different connector. Lower shot shows the shrink wrap on the solder connections to power the logo as well as control the fans. GPU runs an average of 10C lower during full load, plus I like the dragon
Didn't do a before and after so here is the stock configuration:

I recall reading about this board when I had my Apple IIe and sort of lusting after it. The prospect of 640x384 graphics (higher resolution than the Macintosh of the day) was pretty exciting. Sadly, $395 was way too steep for me...as a 14 year old kid.
I thought I'd post this so other Apple II folks would know it existed.
