Old block-constructed grain elevator, Buffalo, Oklahoma, June 21, 2017. Photo by Joe McMillan.

This elevator was built in 1928 and was originally situated in Bellis, Alberta. It was moved to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village which is about 35km east of Edmonton, Alberta.

This old grain elevator is no longer in use but still sits beside tracks that are used quite often.

An eastbound Norfolk Southern container train passes the iconic grain elevator in Richmond, Indiana, on the New Castle District. The elevator has appeared in many images made of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Richmond in past year.s

Also from the archives: the grain elevator in the ghost town of Dorothy, Alberta.

This isn’t a rework of the previous image, I shot a lot of frames.

Grain was being transferred from the old structure into the "modern" silo on the left...hope it isn't because the old one is slated for demolition...Mazon,IL

This grain elevator and other structures are in a private religious colony, probably Hutterite, but I do not recall with certainty. I was attracted by the grain elevator, which I saw from the main highway, but was interested in the entire scene when I arrived.

I have wondered about the function tall towers like this previously. It appears that grain is brought to the top of this structure by conveyer belt and then shunted into tubes to the appropriate storage device where gravity does the rest.

Some day I'd like to return to this location and catch an eastbound NS train coming out of Oakville, Indiana, with the grain elevator looming behind it. This day was not that day.

The grain elevators in the ghost town of Neidpath, Saskatchewan.

Almost in the middle of nowhere, a tall old grain elevator become a landmark on the flatlands.

As far as I could tell this structure in Milan, Michigan, is no longer used as a grain elevator. It remains the home of a feed store. It also no longer is served by either of the two railroads still running through Milan, Norfolk Southern and the Ann Arbor Railroad. It features that old time look of a small town grain elevator.

Not to be confused with the other "Monroeville" in Jefferson County on the south-east side of the state.

M.J. Hogan Grain Elevator,Seneca,IL

The front side of the grain elevator was even more haunting tha the RR track side.

I'm quite sure it has a long history but now it only haunts a small town.

The Rise & Fall of a Titan

Exploring the ruins of an elevator built in the late 1800's.

There's something magical about exploring in the first snowfall. I wasn't even entirely sure if I'd get any captures, especially considering that this building is surrounded in a field of burdock and in such an incredible and equally terrifying state of decay. The shifting of the ground has upset nearly every building and some even resemble some sort of carnival 'fun-house'.

I'd love to get back here and shoot some more photos, but it seems unlikely. I imagine that this old titan is ready to collapse and a close point in time. Hopefully I can get some aerial footage before then.

CSL's Frontenac in winter layup at the Sarnia grain elevator, St. Clair River (March 1, 2019)

The grain elevator in Oakland, Illinois, is fairly typical of small town Midwest grain facilities. The original elevator lies at the core of the complex but has added various silos and other buildings over the years.

Alvin, Texas has been a big rice producer for many years. These grain elevators have gone through many changes over all those years, and still process rice today.

This elevator in Fusilier is on private property so this is as close as I could get. There was probably some sort of settlement here at one time but it's long gone now.

Archaic signal lamps in a now vacant grain elevator. The only remaining residents are large rats, mutant raccoons, and a plethora of pigeons. It's been closed for 10 years, yet remains in pristine condition... At least for now.

Okotoks Seed Cleaning Plant facts

It was the 38th seed cleaning plant to open in the province.

Its purpose was to ensure farmers were using weed-free seeds, thereby reducing weeds in their crops and increasing farm revenue.

Fire consumes the former Okotoks Seed Cleaning Plant in the early morning hours of Sept. 17. The structure was completely destroyed by the blaze and Okotoks fire personnel are investigating what sparked it.
