November 2018 view of the Harte grain elevator located in Manitoba along the CN Rivers subdivision at mile 107.8.
Visited once before I posted a distance shot (www.flickr.com/photos/pjgrillo/6044710796/) but this time I was able to get the closeup I desired.
After lunch in Muncie we headed west toward Frankton and ran across this grain elevator in a place called Linwood. It sits alongside the rarely used south portion of the NS Marion Branch. They looked to have spent some money fixing up the place.
When we first visited the Canadian prairie in 1976 we marveled at all of the multi-colored grain elevators that seemed to be in most every town we passed thru. Now we had to hunt to find any and they were not the things of beauty we remembered.
While I still like shooting overall views of the elevators I come across while working on my project, more and more I find that I'm enjoying looking for detail shots that isolate bits and pieces of these fascinating buildings.

The grain elevator complex towers over the former Illinois Central tracks in Ludlow, Illinois. Today these rails are owned by Canadian National and host CN and Amtrak trains. The view is looking northward toward Chicago.
The grain is dumped from the truck into a pit where it slides down to a bucket elevator that carries it to the top of the silo where it can then be distributed into a storage bin. Wye Mills is an unincorporated community in Talbot County, Maryland. Print Size 13x19 inches.
CPKC K39-10 runs north past one of the many grain elevators in this part of the country. This complex is Viserion Grain in McGregor, Iowa that serves trains, trucks, and barges.

This old wooden grain elevator was trying to be saved and there was a plan to move it nearer to town and restore. When trying to move, it split down the middle and has reamined that way until it crumbles or is torn down.
Old grain elevators are disappearing from the prairies. The elevator at Punnichy Saskatchewan was photographed from the VIA Rail streamliner "The Canadian" in 2014. Built in 1912 the elevator survived another eight years before demolition in September 2019.
The elevator has gone but The Canadian survives and continues to offer insight into, as well as transportation across, this vast country.
