At one time this was one of the "must have" images to make on the CSX Greenwich Subdivision in Wellington, Ohio. However, most of the grain elevator complex has been removed and all that is left is the maroon silo. Shown is a westbound stack train in October 2012.
Heritage Cooperative uses this Alco S2 switcher to shuttle rail cars in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. The unit once worked for the Baltimore & Ohio, and Toledo Terminal railroads. It has been repowered with a Cummins diesel engine.
Here are 3 photos of the grain elevator located along NYC's Egyptian line at Sloan, Indiana. Left photo was taken June 8th, 1977 and the center and right photos were taken February 10th, 2003. I'm not sure when this became a complete ghost town or when the elevator was abandoned. At present, the Danville line is not in service here and it appears from Google earth that the elevator is gone or hidden from view in trees.
The sign on the grade crossing crossbuck is instructing Canadian National crews to spot covered hopper cars in a certain location at the grain elevator at Jones Switch near Mattoon, Illinois. The track here is a former IC branch line that once ran to Evansville, Indiana. It is abandoned just beyond the grain elevator.
This ramshackle old palace sits across the road from an enormous new co-op storage facility. It is such a contrast to see them together.
Wagons loaded with grain were driven up into that entrance on the right.

Looking into the loading area at the grain elevator complex in Dalton City, Illinois, on a branch line of Canadian National, formerly the Illinois Central. The branch extends from Mattoon to Decatur. Note the tail tracks in the distance.

Viterra seed cleaning and grain towers behind a rail line in Warner, Alberta. We recently moved to this small town and I can see the elevators from my home.
From the archives: the Stoughton, Sask., grain elevator, snapped on a long weekend road trip in 2015 from Saskatoon to Minneapolis with my buddy Andrew to see his girlfriend/catch a Twins game. A feasible itinerary, but not highly recommended.
The grain elevator in Oak Harbor, Ohio, along the NS Chicago Line is a prominent landmark. Shown is a westbound manifest freight (Scanned from a slide)
A northbound on the Bessemer & Lake passes the grain elevator in Conneautville, Pennsylvania, on a most pleasant spring afternoon in April 2007. As far as I could tell, the grain elevator is no longer served by rail. (Scanned from a slide)
An eastbound Norfolk Southern grain train passes grain facilities in Camden, Ohio, on the New Castle District.
Like so many other regions of Alberta, these grain elevators were once the reason for the existence of rural villages across the prairie region of the province. The elevators were the method used to load trains with grain heading for further processing. With the modern era, these elevators for the most part have become redundant and abandoned. Some towns have kept their roots and still utilize this system. In this photo, the last elevator is still currently in use, but the other two have been decommissioned.
