I started hiking the Fish Lake Way Trail about 8:30 am August 25 and returned to the trailhead on August 28, 2014.
The area is not particularly scenic like the great views in Mount Rainier National Park. I say that even though I did tiptoe along the park boundary for a few miles and did get some great views of Mount Rainier. Most of the time I was in Yakima County on the east side of the Cascade Crest. The weather was nice, but the high thin cloud layer present much of the time resulted in few opportunities to get photos with nice blue sky, as you can see. The sign at the Trailhead says that the hike to Fish Lake is 6 miles, but other sources say it is about 7 miles.
I reached Fish Lake, my first stop, shortly after noon. I hoped to travel at about 2 miles/hour since the elevation gain is slight and the trail the generally follows the Bumping River is low gradient. Shortly after fording the Bumping River at the first trail junction I meed another hiker with 2 friendly dogs. He was just ahead of me all the way to Fish Lake. Unfortunately his dogs stirred up a hornets nest and he didn't stick around to warn me even though I could see him on the trail ahead of me. I was lucky to only get stung once.
This hike was mostly a fishing trip so I didn't spend as much time at photography as I often do while hiking. I also don't often upload photos of fish, but decided that I will for this album. The lakes I visited have abundant fish populations, some reproducing to the point that there are too many fish. Brook trout often overpopulate in high elevation lakes.
Fish Lake has an abundant population of brook trout and a rare westslope cutthroat trout. I fished for about and hour and caught and released about a dozen fish. After my fishing and lunch break at Fish Lake I hiked to Buck Lake, fished for about an hour where I caught and released a few cutthroat trout, then move on to Crag Lake where I spent the night. I didn't take long to realize that there were many fish in Crag Lake. I could see many fish surfacing as I approached the lake and as the dogs mentioned earlier greeted me.
I don't pay as much attention to hiking distance and elevation gain as most people who upload photos to flickr and elsewhere so I don't know how far I hiked. I don't have a GPS generated map with my route and all of the details, but I probably hiked about 8-9 miles the first day of the 3 night, 4 day trip.
Right now I will post the photos for the first day, and will continue this discussion as I post photos for the rest of the trip. IMG_0657
First light for a Beamtech CDK250, 10 x 5min exposures under Bortle 5 suburban skies with a ZWO 2600MC Duo colour camera, no filter. UMi20S EQ mount, NINA camera control. This shot has no sharpening or Blur X. A lot more data would have been good, and the wind prevented me from using the dew shield and I was getting gradients etc from a street light. A good start!
Peppercorn A2 60532 Pacific Blue Peter arrives at Carlisle with the Steam Dreams charter from London Victoria. A development of the Thompson A2/3 Pacific with 50 square foot grate and 6ft 2 inch driving wheels. Five locomotives received the Klychap double blast pipe and chimney.This made them ideal for hauling heavy trains up steep gradients on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen route.All but one where built after nationalization .The mind boggles as to how much this restoration has cost

This fall was one of the most spectacular I've experienced yet. Finding early seasonal changes up at the higher elevations early was a welcome treat. The colors continued to impress as cold air descended upon the foothills.

Alirium. I visited it some time ago, but it was time to go back, the rate of change being so fast in Second Life. So here's a set of five this time.
Stanier rebuilt 'Royal Scot' 4-6-0 no.46100 'Royal Scot’ gets into her stride on the gradient, as she passes Greengates, on the Settle & Carlisle line, with the returning Saphos Trains "Fellsman" Crewe-Carlisle-Crewe rain tour.
I found the earlier version a little troubled in the brush work so I re-visited it and simplified my work process and kept it less AI.
The basis for this picture was created with gradients and fill in Photoshop No Ai - I prefer this one!

NGC 1365 is a double barred spiral galaxy and is known as the "Great Barred Spiral Galaxy" and being located in the constellation of Fornax is also known as the "Fornax Propeller Galaxy".
This galaxy is a Southern hemisphere target and only raises to a maximum of 16 degrees from Los Coloraos. However the chance to capture a galaxy that is not normally captured in the North has an attraction to it. The view to the horizon is great at Los Coloraos and worth trying these targets from time to time.
With the 10 nights of imaging, I managed to get a usable 10 hours of data. The data is not really that great and I had a battle with gradients due to being so low on the horizon. DBE applied multiple times really helped in cleaning up what the flats were unable to correct.

Green leaves remaining from the summer past and golden autumn hues seem to blend together on a rainy afternoon at the beautiful Cedar Grist Mill, near Woodland, Washington.
Sometimes I forget that green and gold are next door neighbors on the spectrum, as I often tend to visualize quite a contrast in nature between verdant summer and the bright golds and other warm colors that autumn brings to go along with its cooler temperatures. In this idyllic place, on an afternoon when the weather mostly alternated between downpours, drizzles and mist (I think shot was taken during more of a light drizzle period), I found this sort of blended color palette quite beautiful.
Another interesting thing, that we didn't realize at first, is that some sort of good-sized salmon or trout were busily working their way upstream to spawn all the while we were at Cedar Creek. Someone later told us they were steelhead, which I learned is basically a type of rainbow trout that lives part of its time in freshwater and part at sea (I also learned the general term for freshwater fish that go to sea is "anadromous", so there's the random word of the day).
Anyway, before we understood what was going on, we'd periodically hear a smack, like a single hand clap, or a thud coming from the area of the waterfall that's just barely visible in the center of this image behind a veil of leaves. Once we realized that a spawning run was underway in the stream we ventured over to an overlook by waterfall and saw up close the cause of those sounds--fish that missed their jumps up the falls often were powered back against the rocks with quite a bit of force by the rushing flow. Getting upstream to spawn looked like very tough work for those beautiful fish. Its almost hard to believe they ever make it since they were having quite a time with this waterfall, and it wasn't much of a waterfall by Pacific Northwest standards. It was amazing to watch.
On a different note, for those of you who know this view well, I confess to using the creative license afforded by the cloning brush to remove from the scene the modern outdoor light fixture mounted just under the roof peak. Useful as it may be in the real world, it wasn't working for me in this image and thus had to go!
